I recall being told that you can flush a sea toilet on inland waterways as long as there is no more than one lock between you and the tideway. Where is cruise (River Ure/Ouse) that means you're OK bleow Linton lock as the only lock below that is at Naburn - just south of York. This is only what I have been told - I do not present this as law so please don't flame the bejesus out of me if it's incorrect!
  3. I'm afraid your memory is playing tricks on the you. The floating pontoon above the lock has a split designation. Firstly, as Mooring for lock operations only (immediately next to the lock) with the remainder of the pontoon being designated 48 hour visitor moorings.

  5. Thanks for the helpful responses. The BSS examiner is going to try source me a second hand stove that meets code.....if he can't we've agreed I'll remove the piping and be declared a gas free zone! Jez
  6. By heck - it looks as though you're been strafed!
  7. Hi, My little cruiser just failed it's BSS due to falling gas pressure - a fault tracked down to a probably faulty 2 ring burner camping stove in the cabin. If I have to replace it i apparently now need one (if fitted after 2000) with a flame safety (cut off) device fitted to the burner rings. Problem - they seem horrendiously expensive from chandlers and I can't find a 2 ring camping stove with such a safety feature fitted....do they exist at a reasonable price - if so where from? Alternatively, if I removed the stove, gas cylinder and flexible hoses (but left the internal rigid metal piping in place) would it then pass as "not fitted"? I'm quite happy to use a little camping stove on the bank when we moor up as we never travel far or for long. Jez
  8. Don't bother looking for me at Hartlepool if you get that far - I won't be there....the boat is currently whipping along the Moray Firth - sadly sans me! Have a great trip and hope the tides and winds are favourable. Jez
  9. If you're setting off from Liverpool be careful of the local kids who take a pop at you with their air rifles or try knock you off with their "illegal" dirt bikes. Also, having done it myself in 2005 I would advise doing it during the week as on weekends there are hundreds of fishermen who block the towpath with their kit and long carbon fishing poles. Jez
  10. I was going to air on the side of caution as if I recall from baby bottle days Milton has no smell/taste wheras bleach is very smelly and I don't want to end up with water that tastes/smells of bleach. It's not as if Milton is particularly expensive - £2-3 quid even if I end up using a whole bottle. Jez
  11. Many thanks for the advice - I'll pop to the chemists tomorrow and get a bottle of Milton. Jez
  12. I emptied the drinking water tank (plastic collapsible one in the bow) from last year and noticed that the water has gone brown. I presume this means that there is gunk/mould/algea in the tank and it needs cleaning. What's the best way to clean it - fill it with a solution of bicarb of soda and leave for a couple of days? Or do I need to get a specialist sterilising fluid? Jez
  13. If it's your first time and you don't want a lot of locking you can hire a widebeam narrowboat from Bishopthorpe Marina York and cruise the Ouse/Ure/Ripon Canal. Only 6 locks along the entire 30 mile length with plenty of mooring/sightseeing opportunities en-route. I've met one or two hirers over the last 12 months who said that for them it was a great introduction to holidays afloat. Jez
  14. Thanks for the link David - I'd already found it but never having had to do this before I was hoping to get a personal recommendation as I'm sure there are fair examiners out there as well as those who give no quarter (like with car MOT's). Think I've got fixed up now - is a flat fee (inc mileage and no retest fee for a fail) of £140 reasonable? Jez
  15. Thanks Owen - I've been offline for a few days - I'll give him a call. Cheers, Jez
  16. My BSS (22' basic GRP cruiser) expires in July and the guy who advertises in our boat club mag hasn't responded to the couple of emails I've sent him. Can anyone recommend someone in my area - I am based on Ripon Canal in North Yorkshire. Cheers - Jez

  20. Let me know when you plan to be at Hartlepool - I crew my mates yatch out of there and may be there at the same time. Jez
  21. nice report Phylis. If we had better facilities we'd be tempted to venture further afield (ie south of Naburn)....until we do then it's nice to read of your adventures and look at the pics. Jez

  23. If you ever come up north and cruise the Ouse/Ure between York and Ripon leave a lock gate open at your peril. The top stretch lockie (julie) will have you for breakfast if don't drop all paddles and close all gates.....even though it's impossible to run out of water as all the locks are there just to bypass weirs (other than the 3 on the Ripon canal). Does it damage lock gates leaving them open?
