  1. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/30L-FUEL-TANK-HONDA-TANK-CONNECTOR-OUTBOARD-/140546798186?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_BoatEquipment_Accessories_SM&hash=item20b93df26a

Hi, I've had 2 small narrowboats with petrol outboards and travelled far and wide and never had any issues. The first thing I bought was one these 30 litre honda compatable petrol tanks on ebay. A Honda outboard 15hp engine much like my previous 9.9 burns just over a litre an hour if you're taking it steady on the canals. So with that tank and some others onboard I can cruise for well over a week (50 cruising hours ish). If you plan your route there's always a supermarket or garage very close to the cut and take a fold up trolley if you don't want to carry your cans.

My issue is safety, I keep petrol on board in approved sealed containers: 10 litre honda versions like the 30 litre version on ebay. I just want to plug them in and off you go, no pouring of petrol etc.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Hi, i've got an petrol outboard and I've got several approved petrol containers, one of which hasn't been used in several years (maybe 4) but it still has a couple of litres of unleaded in it. My question is; does petrol turn bad after time or is it ok it use? If it's not ok, where do you dispose of petrol? Any suggestions, with thanks.

  3. We've moored there many times without any problemss

There is normally good moorings just before or after Birstall Lock, you can wind before the lock or in the entrance to the marina (about 1 mile further on)

The nearest pubs are the Old Plough on Front St., about 500m from the lock ot the White Horse (http://www.thewhitehorsebirstall.co.uk/) which is right by the lock.

Both do food, but we've only eaten in the White Horse and can recommend it

    thanks pete very helpful!

  4. We're off on a short stint for a few days from Sawley, stopping off in Barrow or Mountsorrel.. I've been through Leicester many times and I'm not keen on all the locks over the bank holiday. So what about Birstall as our most southerly spot as an overnight mooring?

Best pub? good spot? any info welcome.. With thanks.

  5. we used to have a 32 nb powered by a Yanmar 12hp engne. It could push the boat all day no problems.

I honestly think it will cost a fair bit to convert your boat to inboard, and the cost will buy your petrol for many years to come. I would guess your biggest disadvantage with an outboard would be slow battery charging, and petrol availability.

I have seen a similar NB to yours with an inboard motor, but they had used a Z drive instead of a traditional stern tube. That would mean the engine could go right against the transom. Not sure whether you can tiller steer a Z drive, or whether a wheel would be needed.

Getting petrol is less of problem with supermarket garages etc. However charging the batteries is an issue on long trips so I use a gennie to top them up when we're out and about. Thanks for your thoughts...

  6. I suspect the money the work will cost would pay for you to sell your current boat, and buy a 57 footer.

You really reckon it'll be that expensive? The chap I spoke to who'd already done it on his boat said it was about 4k all in, for the new engine and the metal work. He sold his outboard on Ebay to recoup some of the costs. However I do think you have a point it may be easier to buy a new boat.

  7. hi at our local home bargains they are selling firelogs the type you fling in and light in the wrapper can they be used ina multi fuel stove ? and has anyone used them

    thanks tom& chez

Hi yes we use them all the time. Much easier to get the stove going and less mess in the morning. In our boatmans burner one lasts all night (about 4/5 hours on a slow burn. Last time they were on offer at Wilkos I bought 20...

  8. Ken retired and sold out to his boat-fitter "Eastern Caravans and Narrowboats" also trading as "Eastern Marine Sales".

Eastern were trading last summer, we moored our boat with them en route for the Middle Levels. More recently they have stopped advertising in the glossies, so I don't know if they are still there.

    regards

    David

When I was looking for our boat I viewed one at the very place. Their website has changed since and doesn't seem to work properly so maybe they've shut up shop?

  9. I've got a mate who's looking for his first boat. He's taken a fancy to Viking and been to see a 23ft 4 berth, however the one in question was somewhat shabby and no BSC. Can you please keep your eyes peeled for any good examples over the next few weeks. Location isn't an issue however closer to the East Midlands the better.

    Thanks in advance!

  10. We've got a 30ft narrowboat powered by a Honda 15hp outboard. I got talking to someone with a similar size boat and they mentioned how they converted their outboard to an inboard engine. I wondered if anyone on the forum has experience of this as it will obviously effect how the boat sits in the water? Also what type/make of engine would be best for a small boat like ours?

  11. we have a narrow boat which is 8 months old ( from new ) now the time has come to patch up the scuffs on the paint work, spoke with the boat builder and he told me the make and colour of the paint, i sanded down, undercoated, let dry and apllied top coat, the colour was a lot lighter, i checked numbers on tin, rang builder and he says i have the right colour and to go back to paint manufacturer, the boat is not 12 months old yet so would it be reasonable to ask the builder to sort out the problem? Has anybody had same problem?

    regards

This may sound obvious but you are mixing it well before use as this will effect the colour.

  12. Hi Flo, not sure about a design planner. However, we bought a 30ft narrowboat last year after looking at dozens of the same size with very varied layouts. It does depend on what you want but ours has a fixed double, then a shower/loo, then a small kitchen and open plan (dining/lounge) with doors opening on the front of the boat. They used every available bit of space and if I was designing from scratch I couldn't have done a better job. If you let me know your email I've got plenty of interior pictures.

    regards,
