  1. Thanks for that, I'm currently trying to contact Beta Marine to send out a spare, engineer told us to phone them but can't find a number anywhere, any ideas? also can't find anything online
  2. Our engineer couldn't come out but he said a similar thing, it must have overheated the second time as there was still air in the system. We think it might be the seal on the cap. Does the whole cap need to be replaced or can we just replace the seal?
  3. Before setting off on a cruise we checked the water and oil, after a few hours more smoke than usual was coming out and when we checked the water it had dried up so filled it up, another mile on and the warning light came on and again the water was empty, its so hot at the moment that it just evaporates any water that touches it. We've had this sort of thing once before where some rubber piping had cracked and just needed replacing but this time round that seems fine. Before we call out an engineer does anyone have any ideas what it could be or is this a bit of an open ended question?
  4. Oh and I did get a phone call from someone who told me he knew alot about SW Durham boats and would be really interested in buying it but then started to talk the price right down, it was only towards the end of this 15 minute conversation that he revealed he was a broker and was basically trying to buy my boat to sell on, he managed to get the price down to £21k before even seeing it, then said that might go down once he checked the condition of it, just kept saying he had to make sure there was a profit in it for him. Well as long as he gets a profit thats ok.
  5. I had a go at rewriting the advert but found I just started waffling again and I thought Starman had done such a good job I just put that one in. Not sure about the amount of text, some people want more detail and some less? A lot of the specifications they ask for only have certain options so can't be very specific. The link I've put on only goes to a site with the same photos, it let me attach it so I assume its ok, there doesn't seem to be any limit on the number of photos AD allows anyway, I think I could have added another 5 if I had them. But good news is I've had a lot more interest, paid for it to go in all the local newspapers aswell which has also generated interest, just waiting for some feedback, condsidereing a price drop again but it may have to be done as we're not going to get time in the summer to give her paintwork the attention she deserves. I've got my little camera at the ready and when it gets a bit sunnier (or not as the case may be) I will go and take a video. I've had a couple of people come to view from Wales and Blackpool so hopefully a video will bring people from further afield.
  6. I did realise the price might be a bit high a couple of weeks ago but at the moment the market seems to constantly be shifting, we had a valuation done in december at 36000, but looking at what similar boats are selling for now they're going for low 30s like you say. When we originally bought our boat it was through a broker and I just thought she was a waste of money, she took £1000 from us out of the asking price and all she did was have the boat up on a few online sites with an advert just like mine, in the end I just dealt directly with the buyer anyway. But on the other hand I also know somebody who sold their boat after a week at ABNB but their commission was quite high. But to be honest I'm not a professional marketer and I based my adverts on my own experiences of buying a boat, and I often looked at ads like mine and just asked for more photos but I guess its all about catching the eye, at least I know not to take up a career in advertising. I'm going to give AD one more try with a fancy and snappy ad (don't know about getting a video though, bit too technical for me) and I'll also be dropping the price. Cheers for the advise.
  7. At the time I thought I would just get a free advert and see how that goes, all the interest I've had so far I have provided a lot more photos, but I will think about getting a better ad. I've also put an advert in quite a few magazines and papers. I think the market seems to have dropped in price since we started advertiseing so I'll probably do a bit of review on the ads.
  8. I only put that the mooring may be available if needed as when we were looking for a boat we couldn't find a mooring anywhere so it was just there if anyone was interested. I know that these moorings are just given away to those who phone the moorings officer as we did just that after the tender business was brought out and the people in the next mooring have done exactly that and moved over just before christmas, I have also checked with BW if these moorings go to tender and they said they don't. What I meant by right people, was that when we originally phoned about moorings we were told by a secretary and the general information line that ALL moorings went to tender and we'd have to wait months till the system was set up, it was a very different story when I got through to the person who actually has control over the moorings who simply just gave me it over the phone, the other moorers found their experiences very much the same. l know that this 'never' happens with BW moorings but they get away with this on our moorings by hiking up the price to rediculous residential prices (when they're not), I did notice that things are a bit different from when we bought our boat and in the end I advised the people who viewed our boat to actually get one on tender as they're easier and cheaper than a lot of people think, it depends on what the boat is used for. When we were buying a boat around the time the tender system was brought in most people advertised their boats with BW moorings even though they new you would have to go on a waiting list for them so I thought it was fair for me to mention the mooring considering it is very possible for somebody to use it after our term has finished.
  9. I'm suprised you managed to sell it on ebay, I haven't seen many sold on there without going for low prices. I did advertise it on ebay but only as an advert not an auction as I could imagine people bidding without even seeing the boat, then changing their minds.
  10. I'm currently trying to sell our canal boat, I have spent a small fortune getting it advertised almost everywhere but not really getting anywhere, doesn't seem to be many buyers out there. We really need to sell it by August and if it comes to it I might need to sell it off to a brokerage, I was wandering if anyone had experiences of selling their boat for cash at brokerages and how much to expect. Also if anyone is interested, our advert is on Apolloduck http://narrowboats.apolloduck.co.uk/display.phtml?aid=141178 We're open to offers so grab yourself a lovely little boat!

  12. My cat lived with us on the boat from being 8 weeks old, he fell in the canal a few times as a kitten so best to supervise but he learnt his lesson and fell in a bit less as he got older. He never got used to the engine noise though and tried to escape (he even managed to jump from the moving boat onto the bank), I think it depends on the cat and maybe try putting the engine on for a little bit everyday. But alas in the end it wasn't the canal that killed the cat it was the road, so I don't think boats are any more dangerous than houses. I've known a lot of others who have kept cats on boats even just for weekend trips. Our neighbours had a cat which wasn't aloud out which I hugely disagree with, boats aren't as big as houses and they get damp! If you have a canal cat let it explore they love watching the water and wildlife, I think my cat had a happy life on our boat! What do people think about dogs on board? I live on a 46" narrowboat and I've wanted a dog for a long time but I'm worried that the space is too small for a dog to be left alone in the daytime. I work four days a week, my partner works various days. If I was to get one it would probably be a rescue dog and small.
  13. My Eberspacher Hydronic D5WSC has finally gone kaput, it wasn't working very smoothly to begin with so I think it was long overdue for a good service. I think the glow plug has also gone as it justs gives out a single click when I try to put it on. I think I'm prepared for this, I've had a look at the YouTube vid, got all the tools I need except I can't seem to find anywhere that does spare parts for this model. I followed the links from other threads but most aren't working anymore, anyone have any ideas? A service kit would be ideal (at a reasonable price).
  14. We've been living aboard a 46ft narrow boat for almost two years and I've constantly struggled with the condensation and damp all this time. I've tried a big dehumidifier but it only works with the air just around it, i've also resealed a couple of the windows as I thought they could be leaking but that hasn't worked. Its getting so bad now that black mould has stained our interior wood, it can be removed with a lot of sanding but i get the feeling that next winter it will just return. Is there anything I can do besides ripping the whole lot out and re-insulating it? Any help is appreciated.
