  1. Any marina on a canal and built in recent years is subject to the standard BW/CRT Network Access Agreement, under which the marina operator is required to ensure that boats moored there have a CRT licence. Older canal marinas may have different agreements (or none at all) and marinas on CRT rivers have riparian rights so no CRT licence is required until the boat is taken out of the marina.
  2. As I understand it Stanley Ferry makes gates for wide locks and Bradley for narrow locks.
  3. What did I say? Hack Green Lock 2, Baddington, Shropshire Union Canal. Detail From Date: 03/10/2020 16:00 To Date: On-going Type: Navigation Closure Reason: Structure failure Is the towpath closed? No Location Closest waterway: Shropshire Union Canal Starts at: Hack Green Winding Hole Ends at: Moss Hall Winding Hole Upstream winding hole: Hack Green Winding Hole. Downstream winding hole: Moss Hall Winding Hole. Description The cill liners on the bottom gates of Hack Green Lock 2 have failed and the resultant leakage means the water level cannot be gained within the lock to open the top gates.

    And documented as such.
  5. And the gates leaked back in 1924.
  6. P&S Marine at Croxley (Watford)?
  7. That's a suspiciously smooth round hole to have been formed by erosion of a small leak to become a larger leak. I think something else has been going on.
  8. That, and a significantly higher power output, if you want to run high power 240V appliances.
  9. That one appears to come with a motor rather than a generator!
  10. So how do I comment on a change.org petition without adding a vote in favour? No I thought not. Just encourages 'bubble' thinking.
  11. The gates built at Callis Mill during the 90s for the Rochdale Canal restoration were built of a dense close grained hardwood and still look almost brand new. By contrast the BW gates built around 2000 are now looking quite 'craggy'.
  12. If the hole in the steel cabin side is the same size as the hole in the porthole ring, then the glass is trapped between the two, and more or less any sealant will do. If the hole in the cabin side is the same size as the glass, then the glass needs to be glued to the porthole ring.
  13. Those surface mount things are (if you'll pardon the pun) plug ugly! Fitted facing up, the thing fills with water when disconnected, and water running down the lead runs into the back of the socket. Facing down, and water apparently enters the connection when plugged in. The horizontal caravan fitting or expensive marine fitting both look much better in that regard. Or why not run the shore lead in through a hatch or window and have the connection inside the boat in the dry?
  14. Solar will do that for you without the need for power on the mooring, or any worries about power cuts, bollard tripping or galvanic corrosion.
  15. Clearly the exhaust pipe has failed and that is why exhaust gas is coming out. The lump to the right of the crack looks to be two flanges, one part of the exhaust manifold, the other attached to a section of flexible exhaust which has failed. The flexible was probably screwed into the flange piece. The other end screwed into the end of the silencer. Something like this: https://www.midlandchandlers.co.uk/engineering-tools/exhaust-system/flexible-exhaust-bellows. To get the old flexible out you are going to need heat and brute force.
  16. Tyrley Top Lock is heading the same way.
  17. They now all have baffles to direct the water sideways (and reduce the flow rate significantly). Before the baffles were fitted you used to get a huge square flow of water straight out from the gate. Could sink an open fronted boat in minutes if you were foolish enough to open the gate paddle before the bows had risen above paddle level. p.s. Last time I boated on the Wey they still had some like this.
  18. I reckon it will be closed soon. The bottom cill has blown. With the lock half full and the bottom paddles closed it looks like this: And with the top paddles open you can only get the lock up about 6 inches below the pound level. So this is how CRT open the top gate:
  19. From https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-54329934 I reckon it might be Fenny, but others aren't so sure.
  20. Both working at Wharton's this morning. A nice little whirlpool above each.
  21. How high is that drain hole above outside water level? If the bow drops for any reason (full water tank), canal water could enter the gas locker and then flow through that hole in the bulkhead into the bilge. And it doesn't take too much of that to sink a boat. If you have to move the boat to a yard where you can get it repaired I would suggest removing the gas bottles altogether, bolting a plate, or even a piece of plywood, over the drain hole with a suitable layer of sealant underneath. That way neither the hole you have found, nor any other, can sink the boat.
  22. Today 2020 The fairly unusual situation of one ground paddle and one gate paddle Hoole Lane Lock, Chester. And unusual handrail supports.
  23. My wife's brass band hasn't been allowed to rehearse since about April, let alone perform.
