  1. Thanks Peter- way to go yet but Im still grinning ear to ear :-) Im pretty sure mine did indeed come out of a lifeboat and is low hours. Certainly when I took the gearbox off the splines, drive plate and internal bellhousing were immaculate with no wear visible (relief) Similary the flywheel ring gear has little wear. The diesel filter has a really tall collection of fittings for the return pipe.I thought it had been bodged. Turns out the reason for this is that the lifeboat engines were actually fitted with it and is a one way valve so the lifeboat could be turned over 360 degrees with no fuel running back into the engine! Amazing stuff but I dont intend to try this theory out :-D I will put up a video / pics of engine sometime soon - if you see the chaos the engine is sitting in at the moment you would realise why I havent yet..:-D
  2. Cheers chop. Reckon you are going to love the gruntiness.Fingers crossed on the skin tank being up to it. Reckon that heat exchanger will sort it if not.Even after running several hours none of my pipes have got much above blood temperature. Will check my stat etc when I get courage to swap the exhaust and thermostat round. Might sound and go nice but I still got the engine room, bathroom and bedroom to refit yet
  3. Youtube videos of me boat running - albiet with temporary exhaust, fuel and controls! Sorry Chop- couldnt resist If I said I was chuffed that would be an understatement. Engine and prop push the boat along effortlessly on tickover against the flow ☺
  4. I use a 'skinny' metal cutting disc in an angle grinder. Gives a very good finish with the least amount of dust..
  5. Hi Rob- Wow! That is a cracking job you have done there. Thats almost as good just looking at it as using it :-D
  6. Looking good on your blog Chop- looked out for you last Saturday (I was moving that new widebeam ) but you was already in the water by then. Im up for a meet up Peter. Hopefully Sabb should be running and boat finished enough to get it moving! Engine just in today in its new colour- just got to line it all up now and plumb it in...
  7. Thats an interesting alternative Mikexx. That would also give you the option of fine tuning it too- just a shame about the price on that one :-D Sabb actually has tiny pipework- its all 12mm od. You can see it clearly in this pic
  8. Good point By'eck and something which I shall check when its in and running. Engine should have the higher temp stat fitted as was originally keel cooled.Lovely clean header tank and pipework seems to confirm it has not had the salty stuff running through it :-)
  9. Thanks everyone for your replies and especially to Peter for the photos and appreciate your rushing about to put them on here. Owe you a pint :-) Was a bit worried about plumbing the calorifier into the bypass and thought increasing the warm up time probably wasnt very sensible. But its been well tried and tested on 'Bullfinch' -so decision made-thats good enough for me :-) Cheers Paul
  10. Hi Rob,cheers for reply.Hows yours going then ? Mine is getting lifted in on Tuesday (ish) finally. That will be three of us wondering on this same problem then! Would have thought it makes little difference if the return from the calorifier goes to either the bypass or the inlet on the pump as they are presumably linked internally. Was you planning on having a T on the outlet from the thermostat- one pipe to calorifier and one to skin tank ?
  11. I have a Sabb 2JHR which is about to be fitted into me boat. Skin tank cooled. Anyone got any ideas the best way to plumb in the calorifier? I was going to run the hot 'out' directly from the thermostat into the calorifier and then from the calorifier into the top of the skin tank. Could 'T' off the top pipe and perhaps fit a gate valve to balance it I suppose but as the water pump is a diaphragm type I wouldnt imagine there is an awful lot of flow.
  12. I use one of these (as DeanS has said) turns phone into a small hdmi player , charges it at the same time and does not use data as long as you have the film on the phone alteady. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221456876604
  13. Had to do similar once with a 24v Vetus loo that was bought/supplied in error.I bought a new 12v motor and sold the 24v one on ebay. Would have thought a Sanimarin motor to be less exorbitant than a Vetus one!
  14. Peter X (and the OP may find this useful)-a useful list of Nene moorings on this post to help you plan- All Credit and thanks to Gazza http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=83930&page=2#entry1801302
  15. Haha. Thats my only mishap I am admitting to. Couldnt agree more though. Its a beautiful river that I always look forward to getting on.
  16. Thats the one. I broke down just before that bridge last year- but managed to get a tow to the lock to repair the split diesel pipe..Unfortuantly my tow took the bend wide and towed me head on onto that same lump of concrete/brick!
  17. Depends on what sort of boat you have really. The road bridge at Higham Ferrers is easy enough in a narrowboat or river cruiser but is a bit more challenging when your boat is 12ft wide ! The little bridge at doddington is always a bit of a suprise as has a sharp corner hidden behind it.
  18. As you are moving off EA waters you only need a short temporary licence. You will be checked at denver . I am fairly certain your boat only has to conform to the bss requirements and not actually have a current bss to get a temp licence. I am fairly sure I have never been asked for a certificate. Phone Northampton marina to get a straight forward answer.
  19. Looks ok to me although personally I would put the accumulator under the front deck too. The pump is ok on the floor - dont overtighten the screws through the rubber feet. It will run quieter then. It will still drain the tank to the bottom feed no matter what the height is.
  20. Nice one chop.I know this turned into a bit of a mission finding one :-D And of course Im still not in the least bit jealous that yours is better looking and cheaper than mine :-D
  21. If any one needs any there is a boat by lock No 1 selling/making them. Nice chap and seems very reasonable- I have just bought a set so must be a good price :-)
  22. Shut between Hermitage Lock and St Ives. High tides and nesting birds means that the EA cant shift the water in the tidal bit fast enough. Should be lifted soon depending on how much more it rains. Rest of the river is fine although on yellow boards.
  23. ^^^^ Thanks for that info MP. Coming through next week so shall look out for that. Awalton one of my fave moorings too and the lock is the only lock I have ever seen from underneath a narrowboat!
  24. Dont know about everyone but I got an email notification too. Shows up as new message in messenger when I log on here but is not actually there if I try to open it !
