  1. If I remember rightly the rudders have 'NT' cut in them. I moved one a while ago- Hull swam and handled well. Remember this as people kept asking me what the NT stood for and had a conversation with one boater about how it handled.I cant actually remember which boat is was now but do remember thinking it was a rather pleasant boat all in all if thats any help 🙂
  2. I use one of those to chop kindling- last used it about two hours ago. Might flog it now and buy an hydraulic jobbie with the proceeds..😀

    Cable Crimper

Ive got one the same. Leaks a bit if you store it wrong way round and the dies arent that accurate- I just use the size that works. But works fine and done many cables with it. Well worth the pittance it costs.
  4. It happens. I got called out to a widebeam many years ago that had suddenly started leaking long after the owner had it put in the water. Turned out the weed hatch was missing a weld which only became obvious when most of the fitout /ballasting had been completed.
  5. Think you was unlucky.Perhaps just a bit low on oil or something at that time-maybe it had a small leak? Came through (single handed as always) a couple of days ago with no problems and everytime before has been the same too.
  6. I moored there one night right outside the Taxi office. Locals were fine and I had no hassle at all - just the bludy taxis kept waking me up all night with their comings and goings 😀
  7. Cheers for that-Ive just given up on the boat Ive got stuck at Addlington and needed to pick up Sunday. Im sure the notice read 'by Friday 29th' - ah well.. C&H is very pleasant though - enjoy the Rochdale 🙂
  8. And when the boat mover snores and customer cant sleep because of it they also get very grouchy ..😀
  9. Chances are you will be fine though you may find the first few days stressful. Try and find out as much as you can from the previous owners about how the boat works, maintenance etc. A reliable and comfy boat will leave you with just learning how to get it where you want it to go..
  10. Will be OK unless you happen to have one where the water is very close to the top. Rare but there are some about like it. If in doubt cut a bit of ply and it will do the job while you are painting
  11. I guess you have to also allow for the unforeseeable too. I always think of that lock at Berko with the remains of someones centre line that got wedged in a crack. Bet that line snapped 😀
  12. Yep. Seems to be a fair compromise- lose some width which was probably overgrown and not there in the first place and gain some depth. Seem to recall a post on here about that dredging at that spot too. Have been known to totally misremember though..
  13. That was my thought too (having come across the odd boat with horrible gear changes)- or had forgot to drop the top paddles..
  14. Going downhill at Braunston you would expect the boat to be drawn onto the bottom gates.
  15. I dont disagree with you about how shallow it is outside Willowbridge but wasnt the bendy section just before Pear Tree dredged a few years ago- they put all the dredgings behind the wooden poles/fabric on the offside Bank as seems to be popular now.
  16. I use a porti potti by choice. No chemicals just bio washing liquid. Easy to empty, cheap reliable and no nasty chemicals going into the system by not using blue. I dont want to have to cover my turds with sawdust , check the smelly pee pot hasnt overflowed and save my used bog paper seperately although I actually do moor on my own plot of land and have an actual (poo free) compost bin so I could if I really wanted to crap in a bin bag instead 😀
  17. Welds are exactly like the pic. Nicely explained @magnetman
  18. Just had another look at your vid full screen. Cap is just held on with a weld on the far side (or its just snagged on it) you can see how the cap trys to pivot on it- the nearside (to camera) weld has gone.
  19. Ive come across a similar set up on an RW Davis boat. The Top part (with grease nipple in on your set up) was tack welded on top of the rudder tube. Its basically just a hole through a beefy cap.. So the swan neck rotated inside it and not as your vid shows with it. Looks like as you turn it , it is catching so maybe the same setup- weld has sheared and is catching. Have a look underneath the top bit to confirm if this is the case.
  20. They also come in 30hp versions. Not as slow as some - max revs about 1850rpm -but slow enough. Mines a 2J-HR which means its got a Hurth box on it and not Sabb box.
  21. You should tell that to my Sabb2j. The only engine to date Ive never managed to hand start from cold- and thats without chucking any extra oil down the caps to increase the compression 😀
  22. Always nice to see something different in a boat- hope you get it running without to much hassle/cost. Though different usually equates to eye wateringly expensive. IF you like this type of engine and it does become too expensive to repair/keep running then there are alternatives-a Sabb single for instance wouldnt be a huge amount and spares are available (albeit expensive). So not all doom and gloom. Good luck- put a vid up when you get it running🙂
  23. You may well be right. Cant remember that lock being slow to fill though so not sure why anyone would do that (unless of course the lower paddles were still up) Ive seen a good few bounce off the gates enough to let a good splurge of water in -and wondered at the forces on the collar that cant move unlike the opposite side.
  24. I wondered if it was just a shorter and unrestrained boat kept back from the gates with some over ethusastic paddle lifting that may have been the final straw for the collar breaking.
