  1. today I bought a lace plate (sometimes known as a ribbon plate) for £0.50 in a charity shop. Is this a bargain? or should I morally go back and make a generous donation to the market value?
  2. passenger pigeons were apparently tasty until the USA ate them all. As a matter of interest are fish actually any physical benefit to canals at all and would the annihilation of them make that much difference?
  3. probably eaten by all the terrapins
  4. We were in Laxey Harbour on the Isle of Man yesterday and there is a boat on the hard standing called 'Airy Dick'. Can't help thinking that would fall foul of many of the regulations being quoted here earlier.
  5. In the railway museum at York there is a carriage from the railway line which replaced the canal. They were pulled by a horse not engines. Port Carlisle isn't very big and is utterly bleak so they wouldn't have needed more than 1hp for the amount of passengers going there.

  11. How about boating on ice (in a car) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-11790895
  12. I forgot that there was also Oxford, Abingdon,Wallingford Goring etc to go through and could we just stop for a few minutes. At each, there and on the way back. Consequently in a week we managed to get as far as Pangbourne before we had to turn round to come back. So the answer to my question (to which nobody was able to give straight reply) is No, it is not feasible. However the Thames is very nice and the beer was good.
  13. Doubt it, 2 of them are my daughters Women see a shop. They have to go in and finger very item on display. This a Fact and the fact is it takes up a lot of cruising time.
  14. Hiring a boat from oxford in a couple weeks. Is it going to be feasible to get to Windsor and back in 1 week? Mr Canal Planner suggests it is but the 3 women will be wanting to go shopping in Reading Henley Marlow and Windsor which I feel will use up a lot of the time. I have been advised to skip out on the Reading stop which would save a few hours.

  18. we are looking to book a week on the canal starting this friday (9th October), want to go through Braunston and Banbury so could start anywhere around. have looked at latelink and waterwaysholidays. there are a lot of boats available but the prices do not seem to be showing much of a reduction. Does the Brains Trust think we might be able to get a boat for a cheaper price (especially at such late notice) or that possibly that someone might want to PM me with an unbeatable offer!

  20. Back in the 70's we would leave the Shovel (when it was a pub) at closing time and set off on a booze cruise. I woke up one morning with the boat drifting in a basin. On enquiring in the local shop the cheery asian gentleman told me I was in Slough. So I went back to bed. When I woke up again the boat was back at Cowley. Was it all a dream? No, because in those days one was able to get a plaque from the slough canal arm society (or whatever) if you managed to get to the end. And the plaque was proudly displayed for many years.

  23. Was at the ownerships show at the weekend and was very impressed with everything and everybody we met. We will almost certainly become an ownership menber. But.... Has anybody got a bad word to say about them? I was asking everybody that there must be some negativity around and I would rather hear it now than after I have purchased a share. If you prefer not to put it on the public domain please PM me, thanks AW
