  1. I ruined a 12v LCD flat screen by using direct from the 12v circuit, over £200 out of pocket. I have since (two years ago) invested in a regulator (Amperor) and everything works OK including my peace of mind!
  2. I recall somewhere there was a helpful chap running such a site - think I got it through this firum. Not helpful as my mind is failing for proper info - does anyone else have any clues?? Is this what we are looking for? To work it needs us to send in the updates regularly.http://diesel.fibrefactory.co.uk/
  3. I had this problem, a new diode pack solved the problem but I a sure there will be other possible causes - like loose connections. Alex
  4. Any ideas how to treat the inside of an iron kettle? I have a good one which I use on the Epping but the inside keeps rusting up. There used to be a spray on product to renovate or re-coat the Teflon pans.. I haven't seen it around for a while, does anyone know if the stuff is still available or any ideas how to treat the kettle? Alex
  5. As a small boy I followed this story with my dad translating the technical details of degrees of list into an understandable form for me. I remember waiting for the news on the BBC radio every night for the lastest. Eventually I wrote to Capt Carlsen of the Enterprise and in return received a very warming letter which I still have today. Alex
  6. Just what I did and it works fine - thanks for the tip and to others with sensible replies.
  7. 'Flap valve' is this the corrct term, or will I be laughed out of the plumbers merchants? Are they common items? Alex
  8. Built in digital TVs are expensive more like over priced I bought a 12v digi box from TJ Hughes for £26 which uses 1amp and produces a better picture than bog standard analogue. I use a cheap set top ariel with mag base perched on the roof when in use. It works for most of the canal system. The TV is 15" 12v LCD from Sainsburys £180 two years ago. I use this with a stabaliser Alex
  9. Thanks everyone for you replies - regarding the umbrella, that's what I've been using up to now but it gets in the way of the chimney to the BMC. If I find a workable solution I'll post. Alex
  10. I have the usual wet gear but when raining and at the tiller the rain runs off my suit into the cabin (I have a trad stern). Anyone any ideas on how to stop the rain entering the cabin? Any equipment designed for this problem? Alex
  11. I always find Wigan OK. I generally moor opposite the new BWB building or a bit further up opposite the builders yard. The kids I met were a bit excitable but no real trouble - I found talking to them in a friendly manner breaks the barriers. Enjoy your trip. Alex
  12. Best try to do it at week end as there is a bigger BW crew on duty. Outside this ther's only one guy. Best of luck Alex
  13. I have just bought a regulator from Amperor as a better same than sorry approach. My telly is a 15" LCD Cello sold by Sainsburys last year at £189. It has worked very well on direct 12v with good pic quality, but as I said better safe than sorry. Incidentally I was a bit sceptical at first but an e/mail to Amperor provided with the technical response to reassure me. The kit was with me within three days of ordering - pretty good sevice I'd say. Alex
  14. ! am travelling up the flight this week end, starting Fri or Sat depending on stoppage. Is there anyone else doing the same? Fancy teaming up with us (only me and little woman in crew) Alex PS posted this originally in wrong forum
  15. Slightly related to boat names - is there a protocol regarding place names? I assumed this indicted where the boat was based but have seen boats with place names miles from any canal. This now perhaps indicates where the owner is from. Some classics I've seen such as Adelaide followed by (Australia) brackets included, Isle of Man, Bermuda, California & Braunston - on the same boat. Any clarification on how place names should be used? Any other 'classic' place named on boats? Alex
  16. Thanks a lot folks. As usual the forum responds to requests for help. Merry Christmas Alex
  17. Can anyone identify a source for 12v golf ball type bulbs with standard BC fitting? Alex
  18. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  19. Any idea where I can get hold of Ken Whittles book 'A to Z of Vintage marine Engines'? I've tried Waterstones and Amazon. Alex
  20. I bought an 17" LCD TV from Sainsburys earlier this year, cost £189 complete with remote. It is 12v with a 240v tranformer. I run it direct of 12v DC and it works fine even without a stabaliser. So call specialst 12v LCDs are grossly over priced and with analog being turned off from 2008 not much point in shelling out heavy money. Alex
  21. I need to replace my bow and stern fenders. Currently a button on the bow and a tip cat with button on top on the stern. What should these be replaced with?
