  1. About a month ago, when I last went down to the basin, I saw that there were spaces on the offside moorings at the "Longford Engine" pub (next to bridge 10), and a sign advertising vacancies.
  2. Open the menu, uncheck "Fisheries" and "Waterway Wanderers", the reason for the change in colour will become clear.
  3. From yesterday's Boaters Update: We'll be undertaking essential website maintenance between 5pm Friday 11 August and 3pm Sunday 13 August. Some sections and features of the website will be unavailable or intermittent during this period but we’ll do our best to keep downtime to an absolute minimum. Please note that this includes the boat licensing portal. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused!
  4. Just got an invitation to complete the survey, but it got filed in my spam folder. Probably a good idea for other people to have a look as it's quite unusual for my email provider to falsely mark mail.

  6. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/7564-not-known-court-order.pdf shows that they can take an unidentifiable and its unknown owner boat to court.

  8. The stoppage notice ( https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/9921/dredging-coates-bridge-to-bielby-arm ) also includes a link to https://www.facebook.com/pocklingtoncanal where this information leaflet can be found

  10. Glad at I was around to help. Thanks for suggesting this pound for mooring, just the kind of place I like and plenty of space for Lyra to play.
  11. Report at http://www.maritime-executive.com/article/drunk-captain-runs-ship-aground-in-germany Another report (in German) with a video of the scene at http://www.br.de/nachrichten/unterfranken/inhalt/gueterschiff-lohr-havarie-102.html from which the arch does look to be the navigation channel for the direction the boat was travelling in. This still from the video shows another 2 arches that are obscured by the boat in the original photo.

  13. Delph flight already has railings on the "island" side. If the date on the photo at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/825161 is correct, they have been there for about 30 years. (Edit to put correct link in)
  14. Having just watched it (4+1), I agree it wasn't clear from the commentary, but I don't think you would realise unless you actually walk it. I got iced in there for a few days back in '13 so had time to explore. Not a bad place to be stuck as there is a small shop in the village, and CRT had just done lots of tree work so there was plenty of fuel for the fire.
  15. The horse tunnel is a lot shorter than the main tunnel, and quite steeply sloped up towards the road coming out onto a path between the houses and then the horse route continues on the surface. So I guess it was a lot cheaper than widening the main tunnel.
  16. There is work ongoing to restore the currently out of use locks, see http://www.cheshirelocks.org.uk/history for details of ones that have been reopened in recent years.
  17. I think, but correct me if I'm wrong, that http://www.pbase.com/beppuu/image/50225298 shows a bit of the old island, sometime in the 1980s. Quite a nice selection of photos of the area as it was at that time, long before I came to know it.

  19. Latest from https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/4465/standedge-tunnel InspectionNotice updates: 26/08/2015 @ 16:55 This morning while the normal chaperone operation was taking place, it was noticed that one of Network Rail’s timber walkways that cross the tunnel had partially collapsed and that large timbers were suspended dangerously over the water. As a consequence we had to stop navigation, and remove the boats and crew from the tunnel. Network Rail have mobilised a maintenance crew with the aim of removing the dangerous timbers. That work is just starting and is expected to be complete tonight. If all goes well, and there is high confidence that it will, the boats who’s passage was interrupted today will go through the tunnel tomorrow (Thursday), and passages will resume as normal on Friday.
  20. Go to http://collections.canalrivertrust.org.uk/homeand type "oxford canal basin" into the search box for more pictures. (Too drunk/stupid to be able to link directly)
  21. I don't know how typical it was, but http://www.hollinwoodcanal.co.uk/gallery/droylsden02.htmshows a chunk of the bund between the canal and the hole being dug out, and says that filling would take a couple of weeks. I'm sure Adrian will have some photos of Brinklow being filled.

  24. Between Br 61 and the winding hole is 48h. North of the new swing bridge 61a on the restored section is also 48h, but ACC or AWCC members can moor for up to a week free http://www.ashbycanal.org.uk/slipway.html. Between 61 and tunnel is 14 day towpath, but pins and probably difficult to get to edge. South of tunnel is partly 48h but then further south towards the disused railway is 14 day with good piling to tie to.
