  1. Thanks Gary, I'm still researching shipping costs. So far it looks like about 15,000 US dollars to ship over. So I need to find out about the taxes and then determine the best approach. I'm thinking that having a shell built and shipped over would be a good choice. I could also get plans and have it locally built but then I have the issue of having to accept the first one built by a company who may or may not understand the nuances that cannot ever fully be represented in plans. Have a great evening thanks for posing the topic. Seems to me that a flat bottomed boat with the protected propeller would be ideal for our river. Michael
  2. Well an interesting conversation. I am researching how to bring a narrowboat to the USA it will be used in the Sacramento River delta, which has over 1000 protected miles of river. As an ex sailboat person the idea of a narrow but completely flat cabin floor means a fair amount of usable space. The concept of a narrow easily driven boat also compact vessel makes sense from the ecological standpoint. The flat roof will make an excellent space for solar panels and the small space will be economical to heat. So perhaps I will have one custom built and widen it a bit but since many flat bottom pontoon craft ply the Sacramento waters I don't think the basic design will need alteration. Having said all that it's good when buying any boat to carefully consider all this. We have two off the grid solar homes and I want an off the dock solar boat and believe that a narrowboat will work well. Thanks all for the thoughts and ideas. Michael
  3. Thank for the replies. I know the length is 35' and the width is roughly 7' what is the height of the narrowboat. And yes bringing one over will likely result in others wanting such a boat. There is one very old canal boat for sale and the price is $208,000 dollars. Michael
  4. Greetings, I'm looking at shipping a narrowboat from the UK to San Fancisco California. It has bee recommended to keep it under 40 feet so that it will fit in an ISO A container. What would the approximate weight be of a 30-35 foot narrowboat? Are there moving dollies that can be purchased to help with getting them into a shipping container? Kind regards Michael
  5. Greetings, I live in the San Francisco California area and want to purchase a narrowboat for the Sacramento delta. I don't know who the value builders are and would like recommendations on good builders or makes that would be a good reasonably priced boat. I would also like information on possible good used narrowboats. I'd like something around 35-40 ft. I'd also like to find a builder or used boat broker willing to help with the shipping details Is anyone experimenting with solar/electric propulsion? Thank you Michael
  6. Hello, I tried to follow this link but it did not work. I found the website and the canal boat section but don't know which one is yours. Thanks Mike
  7. Could PistonBroke and Malarky let me know how I can contact them to discuss in more detail haveing a narrowboat built. Kind regards Michael
  8. Greetings, The boat will be used as a floating home. It will not see much travel. It will be used on the Sacramento California Delta tied to the banks of the river or to a dock. The boat would be used on the protected waterways of the river. There can be some wind but in most of the places there are no waves to speak of except from passing boats. I would like to fit the boat with solar panels so that it powers itself. My wife and I have solar homes in Taos New Mexico. If anyone is interested you can see our homes at heliohouse.com Thanks to everyone for your helpful answers. For those who would and could build me a boat please help me find out how to contact you. Michael
  9. Thank you all for this excellent advice. You are all up very early. I hope you've had your morning Tea or coffee. Kind regards Michael
  10. Thanks Gary. I've ordered your dvd and reached out to shipping companies to see what the cost would be. Kind regards Mike
