  2. Studying the failure of things and the reasons for them is a very practical strategy for improvement . Why and how can be gateway words to a lot of knowledge . Failure and disaster have a lot to teach us . Oh the kettle is boiling when it whistles in Big Northwich land and anywhere else where the kettle is capable of whistling
  3. Oh well there goes the neighbourhood . Thank fully all the wreckers and vandals, thieves and highway robbers will be gone fairly quickly and It's safe to be back on the water.

  5. At least three phones , obviously a catching trait as Junior seems to have caught it too) My sanity , not retrieved. Two chimneys , both crappy ones swept off by trees . Not retrieved , the first one just disintegrated as it was a tube of manky rust held together with tar .
  6. What's it do Mister was the most puzzling query . And then there's the usual stuff , do you live on it etc. Most annoying , I suppose you take drugs and live on a boat to avoid council tax. Deep joy , the great British public has the intellectual capacity of a pet rock at times. I blame Rupert Murdoch .

  16. I'm beginning to wonder if the ammeter was the start of the problem but there are other usual suspects . I've no idea how the inverter is wired but I'd expect it to be straight off the cabin batteries through a fuse and its own isolator.
  17. That ammeter is a standard automotive one with no shunt. All the output of the alternator passing through it on its way to the batteries . Once you start running an inverter that's a lot of current through it which the system wasn't designed to cope with . The alternator was an A127 probably 60 amp max but not delivering anything like that due to the pulley ratio. The HA would have been fitted with a dynamo when new which don't appreciate being twirled at high speeds . It's probably time to upgrade the charging system to cope with the demands of commercial operation . Otherwise a diesel generator would solve the problem and there's likely to be somewhere in the hold it would fit . ditch crawler , the ammeter was only reading charging current . The whole set up was very basic.
  18. Another thing , the business of revving the engine to excite the alternator can be fixed with a bigger wattage charge lamp or a resistor in parallel with it to draw more exit action current . I've no idea what value resistor but I'm sure somebody on here will know. Another thing to consider is the big red isolator switch , they can go faulty. The suggestion of cleaning and checking is a good one too . The system wasn't designed to cope with an inverter, I never anticipated using one .
  19. Only just spotted this . Your problem is the pulley just ain't big enough to run the alternator fast enough to give more than about 30 amp . It never mattered for running a light or 2 and a wireless but once you start running an inverter then you have problems . Re Stirling , I've found the instructions but haven't had the chance to pass them on. It's likely to be ok but a loose connection is always possible on boats . Going to send you a pm about a bigger pulley set up etc .
  20. oboat I've no idea where or who you are but I can assure you that Coombeswood Canal Trust ( Hawne basin) is being pro active about getting further from our end . Things are happening and CRT are involved and supportive . Maybe you could consider joining CCT and helping to get " beyond the stank "

  22. Too true , I'd not owned Halsall for 24 hours when I had to grap my OH by his coat to stop him falling in the cut. Project and I came home alone and it was an uneventful journey . We met up with dear friends which is always good. Don't think I will be at the basin this weekend but if Ian I will look out for you Captain Pegg.
  23. . It's a worrying trend because we all leave our boats to go do other stuff. Shopping visiting pub or friends or off for a day out somewhere local. It doesn't take long for a thief to break into most boats.
  24. given that Tawny Owl would float on a wet tea towel I suspect Effingham would go ok on wet grass Smart boat for somebody , I'm surprised you haven't succumbed to its charms Pete.
