  1. Not sure what rpm tickover is, but it's slow. Even at the current governed max of 1000 rpm the engine sounds slow as, with only 1 cylinder, you can still hear the individual pop as it fires. Have found a prop calc with takes account of uj's and loss of power through gearbox, you have to enter boat measurements. It predicts, using higher max rpm, a max speed of 5.13 knots for my boat with an 18 X 16 prop. I currently have an 18 X 15.. the program doesn't allow me to put my prop in to see what the max speed is then though.
  2. My setup is somewhat unusual. The gearbox is remote so a short propshaft between engine and box then another propshaft to prop. All the uj's use up a bit of power. The engine is also unusual, being a single cylinder Ruston and Hornsby 1vsh, at the mo it is limited to 1000 rpm and only 7.5hp, but once I change the governor weights it'll be 11 hp at 1500 rpm. It's quite slow. Lol
  3. As I'm looking into getting a prop re-pitched or finding one, I wondered if there was a clever program to calculate the speed difference between different pitches at the same revs.. just for interest.. Thanks Casp'
  4. Yep, I am a polite person so I wouldn't be too bad. I do find that most people are apologetic and a bit shocked, some are just arrogant. And, why is it never a nice single cylinder that starts up at night, something nice to listen to, it's always some multi cylinder tractor engine. The other thing I sometimes find is that, as they are these horrid engines, the exhaust exits out the back to one side, which, half the time is against the bank and makes the fumes come in my doors.. 5. The only issue here is that, once they realised their quote wouldn't cover the job, they didn't contact you to provide a more accurate quote. What if they'd found that the only way to fit the machine was by extending the boat by 2 feet, would they have done that and charged you thousands, sounds ridiculous, but something a bit less extreme could easily happen if they don't communicate. I took an old BMW to have new pads, when I picked it up the garage had done a full brake rebuild, new brake hoses throughout etc, and the bill was much more than new pads. I complained to Trading Standards but they said tough, I asked what if they'd decided it needed a new engine and fitted one, Trading Standards said that without a written detail of agreed works the garage could do whatever they wanted and bill me for it, perfectly legally.. 6. I'm afraid ignorance of the "Rule" wouldn't stop me nagging at them, rule or no rule, you have to be very selfish, or thick, to not realise that running your engine at night is really annoying to everyone around you, especially if you have a horrible sounding Mitsubishi lump ? Casp'
  7. I wonder how agreeable boatyards would be if you insisted on a written quote upfront before they started any works. Would they actually do this, or just talk their way out of it.. Casp'
  8. People seem incapable of being without all the household electrical goodies, I've turned gennys off if they've annoyed me, but a neighbour that runs their boat engine at night, when they've had all day to charge the batteries if needed, is annoying. I'm more considerate, which is a shame, as my old Ruston cranking up at midnight would be a nice noise.. Casp'
  9. It's east from where I am ?. There is Audlem too, that's a bit north of me.. and someone said that the Droitwich is empty? That's south of me.
  10. We prefer to say Midlands.. Depends where you are.
  11. I would have expected it to snap, not bend to 90 degrees.. it wouldn't even drill into MDF..
  12. My brother bought this set and I know he occasionally goes in a pound shop so could be right..
  13. I'm afraid that without photo evidence we don't believe you.
  14. I'm sure this isn't supposed to happen !
  15. I made the mistake of having a battery charging in the garage, and without thinking I was grinding just outside with the door open, there was an almighty bang.. Very Very loud. A grinding spark must have reached the battery, it blew 2 sides off the battery and covered the charger in acid and ruined it... I cleaned it all up with just water, but it did eat into the concrete floor a little.. The neighbours came running round to see what it was.. Casp'
  16. I think, if you built the boat yourself, from scratch, not this self fit-out, cheating lark, but actually started with sheets of steel, then everything should be free, forever. Seems perfectly fair.. Casp'
  17. I'm glad most of the canal's near me are narrow, otherwise i'd have had to build a widebeam, and that would have been much harder..
  18. Is there a petition we can sign to agree with the proposal..
  19. I took this short video which shows the water being pumped passed a drained section by my mooring during culvert repair. This wasn't a short term fix, it was there for the full stoppage. Casp'
  20. Surely every narrow boat should be fitted with a single cylinder engine, I can't even count to 4.. Casp'
  21. I can't remember, does coolant hose need to be something specific for the BSS, or just standard radiator hose? Casp'
