  1. The system certainly isn't looking too healthy up here. Unfortunately my phone wouldn't let me get far enough to see the breach was on the isolated section of the Monty.
  2. I hear the Montgomery canal is closed now due to a breach and structural failure. The system seems in a dire state..
  3. Says they are draining the section for engineers to look, but no photos or details anywhere. I guess we'll see, be quite a few boats, especially hire boats, stuck the wrong side. Casp'
  4. Any idea how serious, hope it's not months to sort it. Casp'
  5. I did my boat with KB 2 years ago, and dry docked it last week. The hull was fine, paint looked to still be on ok. It was really warm yet the hull took an age to dry and I did wonder if that was due to this paint somehow? Usually I find bubbles on the sides that are full of water, there were noticeably less, but it has only been 2 years. KB does go on very easy with a roller, though you needs loads as the paint sets on them, as it's easy it does seem like cheating somehow.. 43 foot boat, only applied below the rubbing strake, 5 litres did 5 coats.. Boat is 19 years old and I didn't find anything to worry me, hut then our family believe you can pretty much paint with anything you like, it makes no difference really, just cosmetic.. suppose to give a firm recommendation I would like to see a hull that had only ever been painted with KB.
  6. Wash your mouth out, no foul language on this site.. Casp'
  7. Sold the Dorman. The chap is going to restore it to show at vintage engine rallies.. mounting it permanently on a trailer and even running it with a propeller in a perspex box. I can't wait to see it once it's finished.. He also bought my old Armstrong Siddley AS1.
  8. Can't imagine a Prince coming for it, unless Harry is building a shell..
  9. Not on eBay yet, but I'm thinking of selling my Dormant 2DSM as it's just sitting in the garage and I can't see me building another shell, which is what I got it for.

  12. You could at least video the exhaust stack, like I did last week. I sit by my boat sipping tea waiting for the day a nice single cylinder pops by, only Sabbs and Yanmars so far. though I did pass a boat with a K1 many year's ago at Audlem..
  13. On my brother's HR2, we first used an old, big, fire extinguisher, but it was too loud so replaced it with a Fordson Major silencer. My Ruston has a self made silencer, which is really just a 10" diameter x 14" cylinder, it's quite loud.. I've never seen a video of your Kelvin with the boat in motion... Casp'
  14. My 2vth died... a 2vsh would be a bit big for the engine hole, and I had decided to go back to single cylinders, so the 1VSH seemed the biggest manageable engine. Parts are hard to get, but I have a spare engine.. I have a Dorman 2dsm in the garage that is fully marine and all working, also an Armstrong Siddeley AS1 in the shed.. The Dorman is physically too big for my boat, one day i'll sell it or build a shell for it..
  15. Odd that the Ruston seems so cheap in comparison. I have a spare, fully working, Ruston in the shed too. I hope to fully rebuild it and then swap it for the one in the boat, if I ever get around to it.. Casp'
  16. That JP1 is a lot, I paid £30 for my Ruston, sort of.. I looked at getting a jp1, not much between them really, same diameter piston too. Casp'
  17. Ok, so it's not very fast, but it does get there.. to get around the governed max rm of 1000, I have fitted a separate wire throttle off the top of the governor arm which allows more revs when needed, (got the idea from a friend's Kelvin J2 which had one fitted) only really for getting loose when aground or stopping, though it did achieve 4mph with about 1200 rpm along the moss straight.. Going to fit a slightly bigger prop too and then i'll leave it as it is.. My friend has a fully recon HR2 he's trying to sell me, which will fit the engine hole, but that would be quick and wouldn't sound as nice.. I get a lot of comments from passers by, one chap was telling his wife about the steam coming out the chimney, lol, another asked if it was a standard diesel engine? and one chap asked if it was a bolinder...!! I wish... Casp'
  18. Spoke to the previous owner of my spare engine, he never touched the governor weights and he doesn't think it would rev to 1500.. if I find there are also no bolts in the governor weights on the boat engine then it'll mean there is nothing I can do about the governor, but it's a bit of work to check.. I could put the flywheel back on the spare and start it up to see what it revs up to, if it Max's out at 1000 then I'm stuck.
  19. Using that prop calc, it shows that the, once I have sorted the governor, the optimum speed of 5.13 knots is achieved with a 19 x 14, I currently have an 18 x 15 and 18 is the biggest diameter I can comfortably fit on.
  20. That ties with what I was expecting.. this engine is definitely plated as the lower rpm model, I guess a previous owner must have removed the bolts to increase revs, just lik I want to do on my boat engine..
  21. So, just to get that in simple terms, am I correct I. Thinking that adding the bolts would govern the engine to a lower max rpm, in which case a previous owner must have removed them..
  22. Just looked at the governor weights on my spare engine, which is exactly the same model. On these the weights have a hole where a bolt is used to increase the weight, I had expected mine to have the bolts in, but there is just a hole, no bolts. I had thought that to increase the governed speed you would need to lighten the weights by removing the bolts..Am I wrong?
  23. I will be doing the governor first, so I will find that out. I was just interested in whether there is a prop calc to give examples, only really for interest at the mo, couldn't swap a prop until the spring anyway. Casp'
  24. I was thinking of getting the 18 X 19 re-pitched that way I can swap for he props at one time, but they can only really re-pitched that down to an 18 X 17. If I could find a good cheap 18 X 16 then I would try that first..
  25. Not done the weights yet. I have an identical engine in my shed, so i'm going to do a test run on that first to see how easy it is. I have run the engine in gear and pulled the governor arm by hand so it revs much higher than its governed 1000 rpm. When I did this it really through out some wash from the prop compared to at 1000 rpm, but, you are right, a test would be a good idea. The real test, for me, is going up the Llangollen by the moss. So for an 18 x 15 an increase in pitch to 16 would equal an increase in diameter of ? I had an 18 x 19 on before and that was too big for this engine, it did go but when I put it in gear it shook everything... Casp'
