  1. Are these going to be inforced for the BSC, if so it will involve almost every boat having fairly major work to comply. I know that my two stoves, one in the engine room! certainly will not. Who has an insulated flue? or an air gap under the hearth.
  2. Casper (43 foot, 21inch draft) has a Sabb 10 single cylinder, 2:1 box with an 18x14 prop. It can just about do over the speed limit and I woudn't want to go on a big river with it. I think boats are far too over-powered these days.
  3. Does anyone know where I can buy Lister blue paint so I can paint an HR2. Thanks.
  4. OK, enough about the Beta 1903, i'm sure they're perfectly good but I like the sound of a proper engine.
  5. Yes, i'll have to lower the sterntube as well. A fairly easy job. I can do it whilst i'm lengthening the boat.
  6. Thanks. As it happens i've just bought a Ruston 2VTH, i was wondering what size prop but you've answered that for me, though I would have to drop the skeg to fit one your size as i only have 21 inch draft! What is your engine like, any good for rivers, i've never gone on any with the little Sabb as not enough nerve or power. Is the 2VTH a left hand or right hand rotation?
  7. Well, this isn't quite the response I had hoped. I hoped it would be a 10 hp, it's certainly a big lump and sounds great but 5 hp is not much use. I'll have to stick with my Sabb, that sounds good too.
  8. Oh... a 5hp won't push my boat. Just as well i'm only thinking about it, no money changed hands yet..
  9. Hi. On the engine plate it reads- size 1. class VTO . no 227021 . I don't know the hp and i couln't find a site on the net to quote the details. My Sabb has max 1800 rpm, though it never revs that high in practice. I've also been offered a prop which is 18x19, it didn't come from this engine but it'll fit on my boat without the need to drop the skeg. Any one any suggestions for me. Thanks.
  10. Hello. I have a 43 ft boat with a Sabb 10hp single cylinder. I've been offered a Ruston & Hornsby single cylinder which i'm thinking of swapping for my Sabb. Not sure of Ruston's age, but it's obviously very old. Think it's also 10 hp. I hope to extend my boat to about 55 ft in a couple of years and wondered would the Ruston be better to power a longer boat as my Sabb is fairly slow with the current length. I currently have an 18 x 14 prop for my Sabb, any ideas what size the Ruston would like? Thanks
  11. I'm making a stove for my engine room, as space and cost are important i'll actually make one from a 6kg gas bottle. If you have a jig saw, drill and basic welding skill it's easy to make one. Plenty of web sites giving details, though some look better than others. When painted black they look rather good especially if you can get a second hand stove door to fit on it as I am.
  12. Hello again, just a quick update. We have fitted starter ring and motor and the variable throttle. If you want to see the engine running my mate has put it on youtube, simply search for lister hr2. Thanks to everyone who responded.
  13. Hello. I'm fitting a stove into my engine room, it has to be small and will only be used to keep me warm whilst cruising through the cold days so doesn't have to stay in all night. As cost and size is important, i'm making it myself. I'll cut the top off a medium sized gas cylinder and fit a flat top then using an old door i have from an essy stove i'll build out from the front to fit the door. Nice and cheap and when painted they look rather good too.
  14. Does anyone know what will happen if you continuously cruise but take up a winter mooring every year. Will you still have to pay the 150.00 or will you pay a proportion of the fee.
  15. From the figures quoted we seem to be paying more for our propulsion diesel than cars do for their diesel. Me and alot of boaters I know simply drive to a roadside garage that sells red diesel and fill a few tubs, they say it's ok for us to buy it and it's less than 70 pence per litre. . I would bet that after a year of this mess things change to make things simpler yet alot more expensive for us boaters.
  16. Not sure what you mean about the main -ve point. I've looked at another HR2 and that starter motor wasn't isolated either so think I should be ok getting the cheaper one. We've purchased a propeller now, a 22 x 22.5, which works out fine with the on-line prop calculator and I found a chap with same engine layout and he had a 22 x 22, so should be ok, a good buy too at #81.00 including delivery. We're going to look at the throttle next week, it's a slow job marinising an engine.
  17. Back on this issue again. Buying a starter motor for the HR2. We can get a fairly cheap one but it isn't insulated from the engine so it normally earths through the engine, though it does have a terminal on the starter for the earth. Or we can pay loads more for an isolated starter which is insulated from the engine. Does this really make any difference. The starter is only on for a short time. I know someone who has a car alternator on their engine, which is presumably not isolated from the engine and on all the time.
  18. I haven't tried that, i'll pop into my local computer shop and try it. It can be outside in the cold and not me.
  19. I got my mobile broadband from PC World with T Mobile. I even got a free laptop. It's on contract for 2 years but i only pay #12.77 a month so it's probably cheaper than pay as you go. It'a not the quickest speed but ok for what I do. Reception on my boat is the main problem, I often have to sit outside to get good reception and that's no fun when it's cold..
  20. Yes, i must admit i'm leaning strongly towards fitting the gearbox onto the end with the flywheel. I can easily make safe the other end. I'll prob make a housing myself fitting a pulley between engine and gearbox similar to picture. I'm toying with the idea of fitting a dynastart so i can start with a pulley and belt off the shaft rather than having to fit a ring onto the flywheel and use a starter motor, i'll still need to fit an alternator but a bouble pulley will achieve this. Theres a dynastart for sale which says its suited to a volvo DM2 engine, approx 17hp, I wonder if this would start an HR2?
  21. I've used go kart tyres next to my boat but I found they quickly squashed and leaving the boat loose, so it can move about. Car tyres are far better, though they take up a bit of roof space while on the go.
  22. We're still messing with this HR2. Got to change the governor and fit a throttle. We've noticed that when the clutch is removed the take off from the engine turns at half the revs of the flywheel, so there must be a 2 to 1 reduction in the engine, is this normal? I wanted to fit the gearbox here but that would make it 4 to 1 reduction. If the above is trouble, can we just fit the gearbox to the starting shaft which comes off the flywheel so the engine is the wrong way around.
