  1. A better overall Festival (free music, good selection of food and stalls) is happening the same weekend in Stratford upon Avon............ and you can get a boat moored next to the festival site ! http://www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk
  2. BW have for many years used back pumps to help supplement water from reservoirs. We have to remember that some parts of the system are now more heavily used than in working days There are more back pumping schemes in the south east as this is where the most traffic is and where water supplies are not that plentiful To my knowledge the following bac pumping schemes are in place (others will be able to add more) - From the Salford pound (Salford Jct) up to the top of Garrison locks - From below Camp Hill Locks to the top - From the Leamington Sump (GU) up to the Braunston pound - From bottom to the top of Braunston - From bottom to the top of Buckby Locks - From bottom to top of Stoke Bruerne Locks - Around Fenny Stratford Lock - From the bottom of Stoke Hammond (GU) to Marsworth (known as the Northern Engines) - From bottom of Napton Locks to the top at Marston Doles BW were pumping water into Wormleighton Reservoir on the south Oxford this winter
  3. This years rally has been at Droitwich so you could have a long wait !
  4. Always go down Cheshire Locks as they are deep and will bounce the boat around severely Remember to visit the The Boat at Gnosall, The Anchor at High Offley, The Bridge at Audlem, The Dog and Doublet Sandon and the The Bluebell Kidsgrove
  5. Having been involved with the postal system for more than 30 years and now providing mail forwarding services for boaters I fully sympathise with your situation If you go back to the Post Office where you had Poste Restante, can you not talk through with the owner of the shop to the effect that if you can receive your post there, you will be reguarly coming into the store to buy things You will have the issue that government (driving licence) and banks will not normally accept a Poste Restante so you will need a street address for your mail - will friends hold your mail and you collect at sometime? If you have friends locally, you will be able to set up a Royal Mail PO Box by using their address (expensive and going up again in price) - you need a street address to set up a PO Box Royal Mail Delivery Offices do not accept mail for collection without having an associated street address in the delivery area You should be able to reduce your mail volume by moving most items on-line. If you use a mail forwarder, you will find that some of them do not charge a monthly fee asking you pay by item
  6. Can anyone give me a telephone number and I will update the Canal and Riverside Pub Guide ?
  7. The small building on the southern Stratford just above lock 22 contains a toilet emptying facility and pumpout The new building on the land between the southern and the link arm, had a notice on a week ago to say shower not in use but perhaps its been fixed The drain from the new building blocks reguarly so it may go out of use soon
  8. Find a local Post Office near to where you are and get the item addressed to you 'Poste Restante' so you can pick it up when it arrives by showing some identity - check firat that the Post Oofice accepts Poste Restante
  9. Lapworth Locks Shower Facility You would have enjoyed a visit to this when first opened (specially built) as you could have done your washing and had it tumble dryed before taking away. Also, the shower room was of the luxury variety with much space to pamper yourself afterwards. There was always the question of why clothes washing facilities were added in the first place as the moorings in the lower reservoir are for pleasure and do not include any planning permission for people to stay on their boats for any extended period The washing facilty was vandalised and has now been removed and the shower block has today a notice saying shower closed - there is no knowledge locally that it will reopen at any time
  10. There are moorings on the Worcs/Brum at Hanbury Wharf (both sides of the bridge) but the pub does carverys with no real beer ! Other than that there was no where to tie (apart from the town centre moorings) although there were a couple of boats tied just down of the A449 bridge We left Droitwich about 2 and tied up on the Holt Lock moorings just after 4
  11. Think it was all tghe rain we had in the area yesterday Would hope the water table had been raised but suspect it made little difference More rain due in the area this week
  12. The byelaws say that the licence should be displayed rather like a car tax disc However, the fine for non display I think is just over £1 so no need to worry there ! BW check whether a boat is licenced by computer and if anyone sees a boat without a valid one, a check on Waterscape (licence checker) normally shows whether that the boat is licenced
  13. If a paddle is left up on a long pound, then a gradient is created from the paddle to the end of the pound as bridges and other restrictions slow down the flow of water After hours of the paddle being left up, and closure can result in a flooding around the lock, if there is not much freeboard, as the mass of water continues to move !
  14. It has been the week after the kids go back after Oct half term
  15. Wht not talk to BW and advise them that you wish to move and ask how they will keep you informed ?
  16. Went all the way to Godalming with a Grand Union motor drawing 3' 2" two years ago without any problems
  17. Never seen any boats moored there and cant remember if it is piled - must go and research the pub in the vallage at sometime There are good moorings from the narrows above Swarkstone Lock to bridge 15
  18. You can use a mail forwarder (use mail forwarder as a search engine entry) There are 2 that service the inland waterways market which are advertised in the waterways press Couple of pointers - you will need to know that they provide a UK street address for bank/driving licence and other government documents) and if you have low volumes of mail how all the charges compare including that they understand boats and canals
  19. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  20. New Nicholson guides are due out in March - Numbers 2 (Severn & Avon) and 6 (North East). The remaining guides and map are just being reprinted, but with a new picture on the front cover.
  21. I can remember going in the The Windmill Inn and having chips - big fat ones cooked in beef dripping - tasty ! Many thanks for the mention of the website which is a hobby (research is so taxing) and non commercial. If you find any more pubs en-route or the details have changed, I would be very grateful for the information so I can update the website for the benefit of all
  22. The Waterside Inn looked Ok when I went past by boat last year or is it just another chain pub with a bland menu ?
  23. The same with the Lapworth flight Stoppage notice says its shut but no one is there ! However, there is an over running stoppage on the Hatton flight so it may be the same team to carry out the works
  24. A previous post asked what is the pipe in the towpath below the top lock The Wendover Arm has a weir which runs down an open channel and into the pound between the lock through what looks like a pipe I have seen water coming over the weir in previous years particuarly as the pound in fed by the outfall of the sewage works futher alond the arm
  25. Been there several times on my way to/from Manchester Friendly guy and great pub Hope he becomes well soon
