  1. From the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal Society

We've been able to re-schedule the meeting which we had to cancel because of the recent snow.

It will now take place on Friday 25th January, assuming the weather is not as inclement. It's a presentation by Job Hutchings about his father David, and the story of the restorations with which he was involved - or at least part of it!

It will start at 7:45pm at Wootton Wawen village hall, and we hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Admission is free, but we ask for a donation for tea & coffee in the interval.

  2. From the Stratford Canal Society

We've been keeping an eye on the weather forecasts from various sources and have decided to postpone the meeting tomorrow night, Friday 18th.

Although it's disappointing, the potential for 8cm snow, perhaps drifting, makes it difficult for all of us, but in particular for our speaker, Job Hutchings, as he comes from the Bristol area and could find returning home quite hazardous.

We're trying to re-arrange the meeting for a week Friday, the 25th, when the weather may be more clement.

Our apologies to all, because we know some of you have made special arrangements to be at the meeting.

If you know someone who would have come but isn't on our list, would you please tell them? Thanks.

  3. The next meeting of the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal Society is this Friday (18th) and promises to be very special

We will have a presentation by Job Hutchings, son of David Hutchings, and it will be of great interest to all our members and others, and in particular to those who were involved in the post-war restoration movement, which culminated in the opening of the Southern Stratford.

The Society have had sight of some of the material and much of it has not been seen in public before. Job has a wealth of anecdote and background about growing up with one of the most famous restoration leaders of recent times, so we will have a first hand account of a major waterways figure.

Meetings are held at Wootton Wawen Village Hall @1930 (Postcode B95 6AY) which is situated in the village of Wootton Wawen very near to the A3400 Stratford-upon-Avon to Henley in Arden road

    Directions:

From the south, leave Stratford on the A3400, pass under the canal aqueduct at Wootton Wawen/Navigation Pub, past the village store on the left and then the road takes a 90-degree turn towards Henley in Arden. At the apex of the bend, turn left onto the B4089 towards Aston Cantlow/Alcester. On the corner you will see the Bulls Head pub and the entrance to the village hall is 100 yards from the junction, opposite the pub carpark

From the north, leave Henley in Arden on the A3400. As you approach Wootton Wawen, the road goes down a slight hill and then takes a 90-degree turn to the left. On the apex of the bend, turn right and follow the instructions as above

All are welcome. Admission is £2 which covers tea/coffee etc

  4. I would always go around the ring anti-clockwise as Cheshire LOcks going uphill are very fierce - be careful of the Middlewich Arm locks as the paddle draw is VERY strong

AS for pubs, good list above although left out the re-opened Badger at Church Minshull (good food and beer) and The Lord Combermere in Audlem

Full list of pubs (if you find any out of date please advise)on the ring shown via the link below

  5. Think everyone has missed what is becoming the biggest waterway based festival during the year in terms of number of people attending

Stratford River Festival 2013 will take place on 6/7 July next year. Entry to the festival with entertainment all weekend, food bars, craft village, charity stalls and childrens play area. There will also be over 100 boats attending next year and all takes place on the River Avon in Stratford opposite the Royal Shakespeare Theatre - fantastic venue ! Last year had over 40,000 people there

Boaters wishing to attend the festival can obtain an application form (reduced River Avon Licences are available) which will shortly be loaded up onto http://www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk/ which also has a gallery of the past years events

  6. If you look in the waterways press under mail forwarding, you will find the ones that specialise in servicing the inland waterways market

You are always better to be hoest with the insurer and get them to record that the car/vehicle is not kept at that address

Also, get recommendations to which mail forwarder is flexible and understands the waterways - there is one that is still advertising although went out of business some months ago

  7. Stratford Basin is nearly always busy

The basin is a 48 hour mooring and can be quite noisy with one of the main approach roads to Stratford just over the Basin wall

There are also moorings between this road and lock 55 - again 48 hour mooring

The River Avon has moorings against the Recreation Ground (between the Rowing Club and all the way to Colin P Witter lock) for £5 a night

You may think about mooring above Birmingham Road lock (4 locks above the Basin) to save the extra hour to work down the flight which are 14 day against the towpath

They are 48 hour I believe. I would have said you would probably get space in Sept, just try to to arrive too late in the day. If it is full you can always moor on the river, which I think is £6 if you don't want to use any river locks.

  8. I was in the pub alst night and it feels very fresh - could do with some soft furnishings but has great promise

Beer quite expensive (Pedigree £3.40 pint)bit all in good order - have at least 4 beers on hand pumps including Lapworth Gold (brewed by Byatts of Coventry) and almost uniquely me thinks, Guiness

Food said to be starting next week

Whetherv the 'whale and chips' will make a return as the signature dish will be seen in time

  9. Below the top lock at Wilmcote has always been able to turn a full length boat

Also, many people use the winding hole immediately above Birmingham Road Lock (down Wilmcote, down Bishopton Lock and along the pound to the last 4 locks into Stratford)where there is good mooring and within easy walking distance of the town centre

  10. If you want to know all the pubs along the Stratford Canal, then there is a link in the signature below

I would suggest only the Masons Arms is worth visiting for food - excellent selection and great value for money. Stratford has a miriad of chain/clone outlets and good independents

You can moor on the River Avon overnight opposite the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for £5 (http://www.avonnavigationtrust.org/assets/files/2012%20licence%20info.pdf)which is a lot quiter than the basin

  11. Its going to be a great weekend with live music, craft stalls, a wide range of food offerings, family zone well over 100 boats with an illuminated boat display on the Saturday night with a firework display following and a campaign cruise to the head of navigation of the River Avon on the Monday

The River Festival programme has now been published - http://www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk/River%20Festival%20Programme%202012.pdf'>http://www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk/River%20Festival%20Programme%202012.pdf

    Website at: http://www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk/

Concessionary licences are available for the River Avon and the following weekends Festivals at Evesham and Pershore - http://www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk/boaters.html

  12. I always pass moored boats at just above tickover

On the Rochdale at the moment and the modus of mooring appears to be a loose rope around a mooring pin with a loop wher the rope is through the loop and at less tham right angles to the boat but facing into the boats shadow - how on earth can you not upset the owner ?

  13. BW have for many years used back pumps to help supplement water from reservoirs. We have to remember that some parts of the system are now more heavily used than in working days

There are more back pumping schemes in the south east as this is where the most traffic is and where water supplies are not that plentiful

To my knowledge the following bac pumping schemes are in place (others will be able to add more)

    - From the Salford pound (Salford Jct) up to the top of Garrison locks

    - From below Camp Hill Locks to the top

    - From the Leamington Sump (GU) up to the Braunston pound

    - From bottom to the top of Braunston

    - From bottom to the top of Buckby Locks

    - From bottom to top of Stoke Bruerne Locks

    - Around Fenny Stratford Lock

    - From the bottom of Stoke Hammond (GU) to Marsworth (known as the Northern Engines)

    - From bottom of Napton Locks to the top at Marston Doles

BW were pumping water into Wormleighton Reservoir on the south Oxford this winter
