  2. Dad had a number of successful pubs and clubs over the years. The pub I refer to above was a busy London pub in Holborn. They use to ‘do’ about three hundred lunches everyday. All home cooked in the small upstairs kitchen. In the evening it became a busy locals pub. Some very entertaining parties were witnessed by local Police, on and off duty until the early hours. One side of the street was under Bow Street and the other was Holborn. Dad died, (and mum following 14 months later) whilst running a pub in South Holmwood South of Dorking. The prolonged hard work and dedication took its toll. Heart took both Ma and Pa. I hardly got to know the bloke. Very sad times at the time.
  3. Many moons ago, dad was a licencee. His pet hate was a couple sat in the corner showing their affection of each other having bought a Coke between them. Dad died in 1978. The world is a different place now. I often wonder if he would cope in todays pub environment. He didn’t like people winning on the reluctantly installed fruit machine. All the pubs sockets were controlled behind the bar. Unexpectedly the machine would loose its power and the winner would win no more.
  4. This is sad. But seems to be the way of the world presently. Pubs don’t want drinkers drinking after the sun goes down.
  5. Just visited the Brit Stop web site. You have to buy their guide first. £30+. A bit of a disappointment to me.
  6. My lad moved to the Murcia area of Southern Spain a couple of weeks ago. Says it’s hot, very hot. The Dachshund (Boris) is suffering but surviving. Very very windy yesterday.
  7. Ummm! That’s interesting.
  8. I have mixed with gay men and women. A close relation of mine is very much gay. I can never understand why there’s pride marches. The publicity of such is pushed into our faces by media etc. I gather there are heterosexual marches and meeting etc. that doesn’t get a mention on news at ten or whatever. Gays are not special people in general. They are people with a sexual preference different to me and others. In the late sixties and many times since I have frequented gay pubs. I am more than tolerant to the happenings but not when things are pushed too far in these establishments. So, please don’t accuse me of various opinions when you don’t know me. Edited to add not aimed at anyone in particular.
  9. If you’re gay or not gay, just do your own thing. I can’t understand why gay orientated people have to congregate. Surely mixing with ‘all walks of life’ is educational at some level.
  10. We used ‘ to do’ Cornwall quitea bit in the seventies and eighties. At one time we have a Renault 6 with a Conway trailer tent slung on the back. Two nippers and all the kit and kabugle. Interesting on some of the very narrow hills. I remember one such hill that we didn’t make it up and had to reverse back down. That was interesting.
  11. We had torrential rain yesterday morning followed immediately by very bright hot sunshine. The boat made a right old racket. Just stretching its limbs in the sun. And yes, the loo doors fit changes. There’s a knack as to how to clip it back into the retaining thingy. I served on a new warship. First of class. It had one bulkhead that flexed considerably (Inconsiderably at times) in rough seas.
  12. I once knew how to do this. I have been away to Hampshire for a few weeks. Online maps still think that is where we are. But we’re not. We are in Lancashire. How do I give it a nudge please?
  13. True. The older Shurflo pumps were of better quality. It seems the newer ones are not as well built. Our pump has served us well. Very well with a few repairs over the years. A bit like triggers broom I guess.
  14. So sad to read this. Hope all turns out okay for you and your belongings.
  15. Had the boat 18 years. Fresh water domestic pump is a Shurflo. Over the years I have replaced the diaphragm with the repair kit. Normally lasts five years. We are livaboards. Always considered this to be okay. But! The motor is starting to make more noise whilst running and now needs repair again. I’m thinking of replacing the unit. The Jabsco gets good reviews as does the Shurflo to be fair. Which is the better unit. A really quiet one would be preferable. Next question. We are not far from Preston and Southport. Any thoughts on nearest chandlers or retail outlet to buy from. Thank you for any suggestions. Martyn and Crew.

  18. We came the other way last November. Going from the top of Wigan flight towards Leeds it was only dense as far as ‘red rock’? It was Bloomin hard work to get through or around. Not good at all.
