  1. Thank you, I am really keen just to get it done and go boating - next year I can worry about the perfect job. The boat is near Dijon so I can’t see that antifouling would be needed, in a way that would be preferable because I know where I am with antifouling after 20 years of sea going boat ownership. Martin
  2. Thank you Martin I was told the previous protection was blacking but I think I will wait till I get to the boat and have a look at what has been done previously before I make any decisions, thanks Martin
  3. Other owner is 3000 miles away and an old friend, we have just bought the boat together, I will have greater opportunities to get the work done and am quite happy to do so
  4. Thank you, will definitely look at epoxy later but time will not permit this year I am not an early riser and after a night in the local bar I won’t be up early enough to see dew😊 thank you for the advice martin
  5. Not illegal, if I remember correctly, it was as a few years ago, under a certain limit no duty, it equated to more miles than I was doing. Viscosity issues became apparent driving on motorway in winter as the fuel started to thicken in the fuel lines under the car. Friend of mine ran his on about 95% by adding a gallon of petrol to a tank of veg oil.
  6. Thank you, boat is ashore and I am planning to go down for 7-10 days to get it done and launched before coming home to return the tools, collect the wife and dogs, then head back to spent some time cruising. So my time frame sounds feasible including curing time.
  7. The boat is a cruiser but a few years old so I doubt epoxy. Other owner may know, I have messaged him to find out martin
  8. Thanks, I do not intent to shot blast, that may be an option for later, what is the cure time for modified bitumen? martin Thanks, not sure what a base plate is! Not heading down till April so hopefully weather will be warmer. standard blacking was used before, whatever that is martin
  9. I used to run my old Pajero and 300tdi Landrover on new rape seed cooking oil, at the time it was about 60% the price of diesel. I experimented with different % of oil up to about 75% but the viscosity began to be a problem in the cold at these ratios, but the smell was fantastic! I looked into making bio diesel as I had access to a good supply of used cooking oil but the process looked to be a pain and potentially hazardous. Two of the issues with used oil are particle contamination and water content, I guess that filtering out the particles would suffice for using in a heater if thinned with diesel, worth a try I would have thought in a drip stove.
  10. Hi all, I have bought a 1/2 share in a boat in France which is currently out of the water, the first Job is to paint the hull but this is my first experience of steel freshwater boat ownership, so I am new to all this. My knowledge ends at the hull needs blacking, so what preparation do I need to undertake and what product should I use? The boat was last blacked 3 years ago. I plan to travel down at the beginning of April and want to make sure that I am fully prepared and take everything I need with me. Martin
