  1. And that is the correct answer. If you are tempted to move when the ice is breakable I would suggest not doing it. Apart from scraping your blacking off you will also be met by many upset boaters when you pass them, if you have ever had an 'ice breaker' pass you on a narrow canal you will understand just how noisy and disruptive it is, mind you the upside is you might learn some new words.
  2. Nice thing about them is you can almost just buy another one.
  3. Got one. For the money brilliant bit of kit but i only run it when I'm awake. I actually find the noise quite comforting in the same way a clock noise can be reassuring. At night i just go to bed in the cold but i do open the connection door from the kitchen, where the heater is, to the bedroom for 15 to 30 mins first. Mornings are a bit of a mental challenge though.

Never heard of "Turf" apparently they were German. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/kcawte2790/turf-cigarettes/ I remember Woodbine though they were pretty strong, suprised they are still available but at a price. One site recomends that "This brand of cigarette would not be recommended for someone who is new to smoking."

Party time Just received my £10 christmas bonus. Which gets me a Tesco Finest Fruit cake. "The £10 bonus was introduced in 1972" "£10 in 1972 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £155.94 today"
  7. Page 6? Will be way off topic by then
  8. I can't remember who said it sometime ago but It went something like for inexperienced new owners Your first new build is the boat you thought you wanted but it isn't
  9. I did put a link to LYMM earlier but not sure if you saw it. I have just been looking at the sailaway page and notice it might answer some of your questions about specifically Dimensions Costs for various levels of finish http://lmbs.co.uk/boats/narrowboat-lined-sailaway/ I have no association with LYMM by the way I just reference it as they are good about providing up front information
  10. Liverpool boat 57ft shell usually had 42ft internal Seems about normal for that type of shell
  11. I think with the scale of the changes and having specific requirements I would suggest that a new build is the only real option but then again it all depends on budget. Making major alterations to an existing boat is, as others have said, not a trivial job a you will be paying for skilled labour. I would suggest looking at Lymm Marina range of shells and sailaways to get some idea of prices and what is achievable. http://lmbs.co.uk/boats/narrowboat-lined-sailaway/
  12. SORRY REMOVED WRONG PLACE FOUND CORRECT SPAMMER BUTTON AND USED THAT
  13. Revisiting this as i remember you saying this, just been looking at the updated Barrus manual and find they now say that the control panel is not waterproof and should be kept under cover. In my older manual there was no mention of this
  14. I've use 3 Tracer MPPT 2 x epever and 1 x epsolar Never had a problem with them at all, cheaper than Victron but still good quality https://www.bimblesolar.com/offgrid/mppt?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Off Grid Solar&gclid=CjwKCAiAyfybBhBKEiwAgtB7fiRbCayxaSAgghuN2MNFp1xZTgS5YywE3sGN-ZuZizJ88AROUHPhnRoC0MwQAvD_BwE
  15. I think we can summarise your list to Don't use garages Don't use small Premier shops Unless you know you can trust them. Larger Argos and Saunburys tend to be o.k. I dont think a full list is much use as everyone's experience may differ. If I have no real choice I will use a Premier or a garage but if practical I will check with them beforehand, you can usually get an inkling whether to use them or not. The other point is that it is sometimes a bit time consuming to identify a reachable location I don't then want to sign onto Canalworld, seek out the list and then check all of the entries on the off chance it may be listed.
  16. I successfully cleared mine by doing a shock treatment with MARINE 16 Diesel Bug Treatment. In one of the reviews it said it might not be cheap but it works, have to agree with that, no point saving pence if it will cost you pounds. Mine was a long time ago, never had a further problem since then
  17. If you still have the old one it might be worth taking it to bits just to see just how close the terminals are
  18. It was a long time ago. I have a more complete list somewhere hopefully I can find it. Coincidently the reason I made the list is because due to an ignition switch problem I.e an internal short causing a starter motor run on which eventually 'exploded ' and took out all electrical equipment, relays, starter, solenoids, alternator? Basically everything apart from the wiring. Starter motor had about 1 /3rd of its coils disappear which then seemed to flash the entire system. The ignition switch used is a standard durite ignition switch which is not waterproofed. When I took it apart I found that the copper erosion had spread across the terminals making a permanently on connection. Top tip as soon as you start to get any ignition problems on a Barrus change the switch it will save you hundreds, possibly thousands
  19. For Barrus 42 i posted alternatives for starter and ignition here, much cheaper and ignition switch is identical to the Barrus item. For a Barrus shire 42 the following after market parts are STARTER MOTOR: S13-294 from www.startermotorandalternator.co.uk (also on ebay with same ref number) IGNITION SWITCH: Durite ignition switch 4 position BG1-0-351-05 Greensparkplug company If it is any use to you location wise the Greensparkplug company are based in middlewich https://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/99596-dealer-for-barrus-shire-parts/&do=findComment&comment=2246551
  20. Thats interesting i have not had any notification. Is your rise because of a claim? If it is it is still, as you say, a good deal
  21. I will second that. Started a claim once and they were very helpful. CRAFTINSURE
  22. Interesting isn't it I wonder if that clause can be upheld in court My interest is now purely academic. Sorry David I didn't notice you had already asked tge same question.
  23. Very interesting seems they are not adverse to some tricks of the trade Certainly saves me having to do any further research as this convinces me to drop it. Few points Needs signup Restricts your ability to sue them if necessary ( basically if we do wrong the maximum we can get is $100 no fault fine) Requires card details for paid services No guarantee that free version will deliver a full valid service, simply making one feature 'clunky' could make the experience uncomfortable. I suspect over time the gap between paid for and free services will widen. On balance I will be removing Neeva and its associated account Thanks for the research gents validates to me my decision to raise it on here.
