  4. Unless I've missed somthing, this was hardly going to be a massive challenge for her...
  5. You'd have worse fuel consumption than Phylis with that thing in. Might be the first narrowboat anyone has ever got to plane mind you...
  6. There is an Sr2 and a Lister box at Kerridge dry dock on the Macc. It was a runner, came out of a sunken wreck of a boat, its spent a week or so under water, but I belive no lasting damage has been done. If you are interested, phone John the yard owner for more info. Google will probably bring his number up.
  7. My copy of the SR series manuel gives lots of detail of the ducting needed to do this. I've thought about doing the work a few times - it would only need a small amount of trunking, on my boat at least.
  8. don't in boating when there is thick ice about it wrecks your blacking. And just guess who had to reverse a quarter of a mile today because the ice got too thick to push through... Still I'm now getting good at reversing.

  10. This is the main why the BSC is so obsessive about gas leaks. That said, I don't know how many boats have actually exploded for this reason without a major gas leak.

  13. Because they are evil robbing theves, who want to extract the most possible cash out of their poor old boaters. Personally, I think a residential licence sounds like a total disaster, given that most livaboards are on moorings that don't actually have planning permission. I can see being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea on this one - either I have to tell BW I don't live on my boat, or have the council find out that I do. Lo and behold, I end up joining the ranks of the CC'ers promptly, and find myself working round the Cheshire ring on a full time basis.
  14. Her point is that GRP boats are better, because the companies that make most of them are bigger, so they haven't gone bump yet. Its the most daft argument I've heard in a long time, but there you go.
  15. I don't roam, but don't have a post address either. My post goes to a trusted friend, I collect it once a week. Could you find someone who was prepaired to forward mail to wherever was most convient?
  16. I found the bottom blacking song rather amusing. Any idea's where one can find the full version of a recording...
  17. I was planning to run up to Marple Junction before hand - I've done that stretch before, so I know what to anticipate. I'll be solo locking down the first part of the Marple 16, which will be slow going (family are driving up to meet me that day). So probably it will be nearer 7-8 hours from the top of Marple to Portland. Is it likely that there will be anyone to pair up with to do the Rochdale 9 - I'm not sure how busy the canals are at Easter? Saying that, there will be three adults avalable by then, so we should manage. I'm not too stressed about timing - worst case senario is that I end up finishing the week towards the T&M end of the Macc, which will just mean longer commutes for a few days, and doing an hour or two crusing / towpath walking in the evenings to get the boat and car back to Macc.
  18. Assuming its not sunk beforehand , I'm planning on taking my old crate round the Cheshire ring at Easter. Intention is to go Anticlockwise, starting from Macclesfield. Any advice is welcome, particularly with regard to the best apoach to timing the dodgy bits through Clayton. I belive the normal aproach envisages overnight mooring at Portland Basin, followed by an early morning run into Central Manchester. What is the situation with the Bridgewater - I've a normal Canal and River BW licence, and only intend on spending a couple of days on the Bridgewater at most - do I need anything extra for doing that?
  19. I think most peoples advice would be - keep it simple. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you have money burning a hole in your pockets, a smartgauge is probably a good bet. I think a lot of the fancy stuff is aimed at people who are trying to have the same sort of power supply as a house, but on a boat - the new posh syle liveaboards. If you've managed fine for 14 years with what you got, then I would stick with that. Just add in a seperate mains loom for the shorepower (and make sure it is earth bonded), and get a decent battery charger (I.e. not a £9.99 Halfords toy sized one). I would keep the existing inverter seperate from the shoreline mains - its safer that way, unless you want to wire up propper changeover switch stuff.
  20. If you read the report on the Breakaway capsise, reference is made to the capsize of Narrowboat "Sandpiper" on the Avon in 1989. There were no fatalities, although one person was trapped inside, and the probable cause of the capsize was that 10 people were sat on the roof of a boat intended for four people.
  21. I'm with Chris on this one. I am a member of a not for profit Landrover club that was nearly sued out of existance for deflamation of character. The reason - someone posted a true statement on their forum, which stated that another club was run for the profit of its owners. Although the statement was true, the costs and risks of going to court were such that the club had to agree to an expensive out of court settlement. At the very least, do some background reading of what is and isn't libel, and why.
  22. If I understand Johnson's latest alleged explanation, it seems that neither he nor Mr Salem has done anything wrong. The whole thing is allegely the fault of a lowly PA. This neatly gets everyone off the alleged hook, apart from the PA. The whole thing sounds as straight as a dockers hook to me. Out of interest, have you been sent the assurances that Johnson promised you with his original explanation, or does it seem that the remuneration chairman doesn't want to get involved.

  24. It would seem so - Mr Lawson is clearly upset. https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=53...437615834761975 I would find it strange that people can act in Simon Salems name, without any comment - I thought that it was normal to write somthing like: Any Body PP Simon Salem on the bottom of correspondance sent on behalf of somebody. Particularly because Alan had already been in contact with underlings at BW, and they all seemed to be using their real names. All this not withstanding, I would suggest that Alan treads carefully, as he might get sued out of house and home even if he is right, such are the joys of the British legal system.
