  1. BW licensing has gone to pot since it went to Leeds, they never answer the phone and may take weeks to issue the licence, cant see how it can get worse when volunteers take over. They do however have agents who can take your form, insurance details copy boat cert and cheque, usually payable to BW, and give you an official BW receipt to tide you over, as mentioned in a previous post. As far as I know you can use a standard downloadable form though I suspect you will have to pay the late payment surcharge/fine (£150) Heres a list of agents www.britishwaterways.co.uk/media/documents/.../Boat_licensing_agents.xls If none are near pm me, my club is one and we could do it by post. Edited to add if you are on the Thames of course get your licence from EA!
  2. Quick read through note very little representation for boaters and they want to TUPE over all the existing staff including directors yet wish to change the name to something Not like British Waterways to signify change, all smoke and mirrors then?
  3. 4. They seem a lot cheaper than the Axiom on the prices quoted in the magazine, dont forget you are paying about 30% more for a better quality alloy. On the other hand I emailed them 3 days ago for a quote, no reply to date.
  5. Presumably all those organizations we have been talking about recently (and some we haven't) SOW, NABO, RBOA, IWA, ULSB had their say on our behalf- does anyone know what our esteemed representatives did say?
  6. I am the secretary of a cruising club, we received no consultation, nor do I remember receiving anything as a boater. This was not a consultation.
  7. I think this came from the first meeting and it is a shame that the "interested boaters" rejected it as clearly there is going to need to be some tightening up of (or even just enforcement of the existing rules) and a relaxation for existing ccers or possibly even some cheap towpath moorings for them seemed one constructive way forward
  8. Some years ago now one of the Avon lockkeepers sat us on the sill of "his" lock No way!
  9. Thanks for that It was a rowdy meeting though it calmed down later, I dont think Sally Ash was up for chairing it and really she shouldnt be expected to being one of the protagonists, it should have been someone independent though.
  10. Just back from the meeting what came across very clearly is that they want to make ccing more onerous to discourage more people from jumping in the thought of introducing some "grandfather rights" (like they did in 95)for those who had signed up to BW promises that they "only had to move back and forward between 3 locations 2 locks a time" had not occurred to them 4 extra boat checkers to be employed cost of which was not available their legal advice was that they can implement these proposals, a copy of that advice was then requested and it seems will be produced. The Davies case draft judgment is out to the interested parties but cannot be disclosed until it is finalized which will not be in April. On a more positive note they are convinced the framework is right but will listen to arguments to increase the No of neighbourhoods and reduce the 7 day areas also on the fees, they will also look at individual hardship cases (need to be near a school etc) They would love to create more residential moorings but there were few locations and planning was hard (logic breakdown here if I can pay £20 a day to moor on the towpath for as long as I like why cant I do the same thing at a more reasonable £5 per day? but didnt get the chance to ask) Meeting was poorly run by a Madge Bailey (a BW "consultant") some got to ask 3 or 4 questions/speeches others none. I am sure someone will be along with a fuller report. Oh and they do read this forum.
  11. the last lockeeper on a manual lock on the Lee was at Picketts Lock, I once asked him what the trick was to working that lock whose gates and paddles were always really stiff and heavy. he said that he did not know, the job had given him 3 hernias
  12. [do we suspect that what is trying to be introduced here is a blanket 7-day mooring restriction ANYWHERE on the Lee, Stort, etc? Yes the consultation document is 7 daying the top end of the Lee miles around Waltham Abbey and All the Stort
  13. I'm the secretary of a local boat club no ones told us anything

  15. First response appears to be uncensored 1 response to this post Nigel Parkinson said... Is the new charity viable? It won't be at present levels of funding, so where is the extra to come from? it woon't come from the general public and it can't come from current paying users. Given the complete cock-up which R Evans and his cronies have made of BW over the last few tears, and comparing this with the sucess of the EA navigations there should be no prospect of any new waterways charity acquiring the EA navigation responsibilities unless and until it hasd been shown to be a success.
  16. OK lets try again between what and what are you looking for this voltage?
  17. Ah, thanks, I knew that I had seen it somewhere, I probably will fit a fuel gauge but can leave any gauge for the water until I get around to it after the boat has been surveyed for rcd. The poo tank came with one as part of the kit so that wasn't an issue
  18. I am sure I read somewhere that it is an RCD requirement to fit these, but cannot locate the reference, is this correct and if so a pointer at the right reg would be appreciated - or did i dream it/
  19. Thanks, that sounds along the right lines there is likely to be a momentary dip in voltage on switch on as we are at the end of a long and thin line (though with the kettle on we still have 220 volts approx) it isnt a hoover fault as the larger (but not the smaller) electric saw does it too
  20. Yes I understood this. i have now studied the phenomenon further. With the inverter selected (or off charger only) and shorepower on the inverter light does not come the charger lights are on and shorepower is fed to the sockets kettle etc all run fine. Start the hoover motor (or any other largish motor) and the charger lights go out and the inverter comes on and presumably is now running the motor rather than the shorepower, after a several seconds the inverter light goes out and the charger lights come on indicating bulk charge (confirming that the batteries have been used) and the motor continues running happily now on shore power. With the inverter off on starting the motor the charger lights go out all sockets go dead and the motor doesnt start. Presumably the starting current of the motor is tripping something but why, there are 2 mcbs in this circuit 16 amp ones they dont trip. I have tried turning down the charge current, but doesnt make any difference. I did try turning assist on and off and my recollection is that it made no difference to the above but I will recheck tomorrow and report
  21. Oh - thanks - that's a relief, it must be a feature (in the sense that microsoft has features rather than glitches if you see what I mean) rather than a fault. i will try the effect of changing the assist setting.
  22. I have a second hand Victron 12/2500/120 invertor charger. The charger and inverter both appear to work oK as they should. The problem is with the auto changeover switch from inverter to shoreline. With the inverter and charger switched on this appears to function and power equipment from the shoreline. With the inverter off charger on only works fine with the 2kw kettle but switch on the 1.1 kw vacuum cleaner and it dies. All lights go of - dead - until it resets itself a few minutes later and either continues as normal or re crashes if the vacuum is still plugged in. presumably this is something to do with the start surge of the inductive load but it doesn't do it with the charger and inverter both on and this is the weird part when I switch back to charger only from inverter plus charger, for a few minutes I am able to switch the vacuum on from this state then it reverts to crashing when the hoover is switched on. Obviously I can just leave inverter and charger on but I have been reluctant to do this in case I forget and flatten the batteries when the shorepower is disconnected Any ideas I've checked the power setting and this is 16 amp, none of the various 16 amp mcbs in the circuit are tripping
