  1. I'd rather spend the money going up the river idle, even less traffic up there! Tom
  2. i still have one fowler for sale including a new head gasket, i have too many projects and something has to give
  3. i'll try to get a photo of a starting handle for you, i may have a couple of spare injectors too but i'll have to have a look through the box of bits Tom
  4. anyone know of any fuel boats in the east midlands, if so do you know if they have any kerosene? also what price they are charging Thanks Tom
  5. according to the prm website the 260 should handle a JP3 even on a heavy commercial rating. i would be more tempted to fit the 500 though, especially if the engine is worked hard or a lot of river work is likely. the prm 160, which was replaced by the 260, in wyrd has been rebuilt 3 times in 20 years and still has a habit of dumping all of its oil into the drip tray under the engine with a compete loss of drive!! not good on rivers. the other thing to be careful of , is the minimum engine speed that prm recommend for the gearbox, a JP3 might have to run a bit more quickly than you may like for the gearbox to work correctly. hope this helps Tom

  9. does anyone have a Kelvin carburettor for a 6HP poppet vale? i'm missing some bits for mine and need to make them Tom

    Welcome BMC owners

it's a bit smokey in here!!!
  11. have you recently filled up with diesel? if so does a modern low sulphur diesel have a lower viscosity than the older fuels?
  12. can we have a sub forum for the not so common Kelvin engines
  13. depends on the reduction ratio of the gearbox, the power and speed ratings for that particular engine, higher speed tends to mean smaller prop. Tom
  14. I've got a little Fowler twin 11HP 1000rpm, that would be quite nice in a boat like that, or a kelvin paraffin engine, an E4 would be about right. i know where there is a rebuilt Parsons D4M paraffin engine! nice and smooth running but still a vintage engine. Tom
  15. the other way of looking at that is how expensive is the boat that sinks because you bodged the weedhatch seal? Tom
  16. 6 hours for the erewash is steady, 4 1/2 hours is quick, but i do see your point. Tom
  17. no, a four point contact bearing is a perfectly good design, more compact than a pair of taper rollers and accomplishes the same thing, how much would you want for one? i have a parsons F type box on a Fowler. Tom
  18. the Erewash takes 6 hours for a single boat, its an easy day, canalplan ac gives 13 hours from mercia to langley mill but you can shave a bit off that. Langley Mill to Fradley with a pair of boats has been done in a day too. Tom
  19. i seem to have killed this thread, doesn't anyone want to argue about bearings anymore?
  20. I believe Elland was built short. Tom
  21. there's always the drydock at langley mill, willington to langley mill can be done in a good day. Tom
  22. no one i have spoken to has heard of it, the company is still in business but building winches now, i have emailed them but didn't get a response, they started production in 1909. it is still seized but penetrating oil is finding its way past the piston, hopefully it will move in about 6 months time! Tom
  23. does the shaft turn freely by hand? if not that could also be contributing to your problems
  24. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  25. depends on the boat, what it is carrying and how fast it is going, work on somewhere around 3' ish but i believe the grand union town class boats were designed to carry 70 ish tons on a pair of boats with 4'3" draught Tom
