  1. Just replaced our engine covers with Hexagrip bought from Potters in Nantwich. Paid £64.00 for 8x4 sheet excluding VAT. Cutting charge £6. Don't buy the cheap stuff - it delaminates rapidly! I tried sealing the raw edges on the last covers with West system epoxy resin but that didn't seem to make a great deal of difference to their life.
  2. C&RT think the stickers should go on your licence plate to 'update them from BW to C&RT'!! (See first para of 'important information for licence holders' sheet enclosed with renewal). Not tried mine yet but they do seem a bit big. A
  3. We moved to Tattenhall in April from the Bridgewater. We don't live aboard and our home is in north Cheshire. We looked at all the marinas in the locality and thought Tattenhall best. The marina itself is very nice if a little breezy(!)and the facilities are super. The staff are very professional and pleasant and have always gone out of their way to help us. As far as location goes, it is probably less restrictive than Overwater; you have to go up the whole Audlem flight if you want to head south! Swanley is restricted by being on the Llangollen. We havn't found the double width locks a problem as we are not single handed. We have a car so access is not a problem and the local scenery is beautiful. We have not tried the bus services but are assured they are good, and the park and ride into Chester is minutes from the canal at Christelton and works very well. Tattenhall village is a bit of a hike but we did it in about 20 mins on foot and has a good variety of shops and eating and drinking places. The fact that you are not cheek by jowl with other boats was a great attraction and you can select a mooring you like. Another plus, which clinched it for us, is that you get a free lift out if you pay a years mooring! We had our boat blacked at the workshop, they did the job inside because the weather was poor and made a good job of it. They welded on a new fender eye without asking or charging and told us where to get the matt black paint for the gunwhales at a sensible price! They are boaters, after all. Altogether very satisfied. Andrew and Anne
  4. We have a 50' boat with the saloon at the front and bedroom at the rear. We bought the three blade fan. Our stove is in the middle of the boat and the fan keeps the rear bedrooom noticeably warmer and distributes the warm air better in the saloon,so we don't suffer from cold feet. Normally we point the fan rearwards toward the passage to the bedroom, but in really cold weather we point the fan forwards to blow along the wall behind the chairs and this stops cold air sinking down from the windows. We think they work!! Perhaps the effect is much reduced in boats with the stove by the bulkhead at the front of the saloon.
  5. How can you tell if a calor bottle bought from an 'agent' hasn't been refilled other than by Calor themselves? If it has been filled at a local garage it will contain autogas not propane alone - can it be tested - presumably trading standards would be interested? Risks and potential danger therein also from over filling bottles.
  6. We installed a towel rail in the bathroom on the return line to the engine from the calorifier, having first checked with Mr Isuzu if the engine water pump was up to the job. He said that this was a good idea and there would not be a problem as regards circulation. We get bags of hot water from the calorifier and the rail works a treat. Only downside is that it is always on when the engine is running and the bathroom gets mighty hot in the summer! Still it keeps the damp at bay. Watch out for leaky towel rails if you get the small white one from B&Q. Had to change ours because it wept green antifreeze solution from the joints! Cheers Andrew
  7. You can get plastic skin fittings in a range of sizes. The smallest, with the hose tail cut off, was fine for the gas pipe I used. I have also used larger ones for where cables pass through bulheads. Andrew
  8. Oh dear! What have I done? Been away for a couple of days and see what happens! But thanks for the constructive replies and I hope you all kiss and make up soon. Am persuing the problem with a local locksmith and will let you know if we have any success. Meanwhile please be nice! Cheers Andrew
  9. I am having trouble finding a suitable lock for the hardwood front doors fitted to my Liverpool Boats sailaway. The stiles on the doors are too narrow to take a standard mortice lock and the barrel on the surface mount lock in Midland Chandlers is to short to go through the door. I'm sure others have had this problem before, can anyone suggest a solution?
  10. Hi How much are you paying for electricity supplied via the shoreline on your mooring? Ofgem says that the supplier mustn't charge more than he pays for it. We got a nasty surprise!! Back to candles! Andrew
  11. Try Pointnorth www.pointnorth.co.uk They have a large range of hood materials, fittings etc. and sell by mail order. We have found them most helpful. Cheers Andrew
  12. Has anyone had problems with Shur-flo domestic water pumps? I am about to return my second one - both were new and had problems with leaks from the same place on the pump casing. I have asked on our yard and two people say they have had the same problem. Are there any other types that are more reliable?
  13. Hi Chris, I've got the same problem with a Liverpool Boats shell. I've looked around and not been able to find anything suitable. The angled collar I got from Midland Chandlers is nowhere near right and the frequently offered advice of sticking a tapered hardwood packer under the collar seems a bit Heath Robinson. I'm now thinking about getting something fabricated. Cheers, Andrew
  14. Stuart is right - Supplementary operators handbook page 28 - Facing the connections the right hand one is the feed to the calorifier the left one is the return.
