The simplest and cheapest method I found was to use one of these garden hose meters. I reset the counter when I've filled the tank then I watch the meter count down. When the guage reads 250l I know it's time to fill up again. No 12v needed. Dead simple.

Tut, tut. Exaggeration. There were only 674 boats breasted up. . I think you're confusing the number with the thousand ships that went to rescue Helen. It is good to note that Xerxes didn't block the channel, but left gaps for boats to pass through.

I was advised by ARS Diesels who fitted and serviced my hydraulic drive to use ISO 46 also to avoid the biodegradable oil which doesn't, apparently, last as well. There are plenty of suppliers online. I don't know how much difference there is between 36 and 46.

Both Pine and Fir have been drastically reduced in price since they were first offered for sale. Fir has dropped from £125K to £90K and Pine has dropped from £42,950 to £34,950. Does this mean that the imminent recession is having a marked effect on historic boat prices?

Just a word of warning to those who watch TV on a 3 Go binge contract. We use it to watch a variety of TV prgrams and Netflix without it affecting our data allowance. Keep your existing contract and don't fall for an upgrade offer - you'll lose Go Binge which is no longer supported.

Bulbourne Workshop and Manager's House
koukouvagia replied to koukouvagia's topic in History & Heritage

I was sad to see the closure of the Bulbourne Workshops where lock gates used to be made. Also next door is the manager’s office, which for the last twenty years had been allowed to decay. Waterways was never going to find a use for these buildings which were in a very poor state of repair, so it comes as a pleasant surprise to see, IMO, a sympathetic restoration.

That reminds me of the chaos I once observed in Blisworth Tunnel. An oncoming boat kept moving to his left whenever he encountered another boat. He'd been told that boats overtake by moving over to the left. He'd assumed that this also applied to him when he was passing a boat as well. Incidently, it should be remembered that some ex-working boatmen and women hire boats. These have way more experience than most of us leisure boaters.

Historic value of early pleasure boats

This topic dealt with the Grebe hire boats based at Pitstone. The post of July 2019 shows one of the extant boats. -

CaRT sets out the criteria for the discount here: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/original/732-application-form-historic-boat-discount.pdf In the old days, it was simply up to the discretion of the local waterways manager. It's become a lot more bureaucratic these days. -

There are 31 pages relating to "Hampton" on the forum. Unfortunately they are either my postings, a few on "Hampton" Joey boats and the rest on Hampton Court. . -

I also have searched in vain for pictures of our butty Hampton in its working days. I think I'm right in saying that our boat was never paired permanently with a motor, but was a general relief butty. -
When I spoke to the owner I was informed that the water cascaded into the vent and the boat sank almost instantly. They were very lucky that a passing RIB was able to rescue the crew and their dog.

CaRT Press Release. Lock Beams

Ha ha. (Mind you, many a true word spoken in jest). -

Don't forget the well known case of the boat that sank in 10 seconds on the Thames. It had been overplated and sat lower in the water, thus allowing rapid inundation via an air vent.

Best Generator Recommendations Please
koukouvagia replied to RosieMarshall's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
Not sure whether a Honda EX650 suitcase generator would fit the bill. They are very cheap second hand (less than £200). I've had mine for over thirty years. It still starts first pull and produces enough power to run power tools and occasionally a battery charger. I've even used it with a 9" angle grinder and a largish circular saw. Although they are very old, they are probably the quietest ever made. -
That link doesn't work for me. I just get an empty page.

This should be required viewing for anyone with no experience thinking about buying an unsurveyed boat.
-
It is a frame that held a generator. I took this not very clear picture shortly after the boat sank. It had been beached just outside the entrance to Greenland Dock.

Here's a picture I took of the boat in Greenland Dock after the sinking. It shows the extent of the overplating.
