  1. Thanks for the report, parts are a bit misleading, but the pictures are good, particularly of the ropes at the front end.

    Tappets

On going from this post, I purchased this from an on-line Auction site - it is a 'Snap On' tappet adjuster. Currently fitted with a 7/16 socket. this is interchangeable with others (sadly lost), but replaceable by drilling a hole in a suitable one. Using the unit, one handed adjustment is possible. The Snap On logo is interesting and seems an early one. Purchased in MK. following a garage clearance of a deceased car enthusiast.
  3. I watched a film shown on Talking Pictures (445 Virgin) to-day (21/06/10), produced by Beaconsfield Studios in 1954, it was filmed in B&W. I have not watched the credits but I suspect it has been digitally re-mastered as the quality was good. I also missed the first 10 minutes, but details of the film are available on Google. Most of the external filming seemed to have been carried out on the towpath of the southern GU at Bulls bridge, with some pictures of nb's moored in the lay-by, and the action moved to the junction of the GU and Regent's canal with the bulls bridge depot in the distant background. A tug pulling a barge carried the British Waterways signage. Talking pictures often repeat films, it's well worth watching if you get the chance.
  4. It looks as though the front is supported by ropes running from the boat to the bottom of the ladder -----this may just be strong enough to support it.

  6. Hankooks make good products, especially tyres, I looked at these batteries, but discounted them as they are sealed units and cannot be topped up wth distilled water. I will be interested to hear how you get on with them.
  7. On a previous boat I had a 1.5 BMC, if I filled the oil to the correct level on the dipstick it would discharge oil via the crankcase breather and the rear crankshaft oil seal, then when it had reached the 'correct' level it would run happily for hours, overfill it and the oil would be discharged as before. I used to top it up to between the high and low mark on the dipstick and it was 'happy as Larry'. You also state you use a 20/50 multigrade - I thought and old engine like a BMC would have preferred a straight Sae30...... M.
  8. Hi, looking at the picture it looks as though someone has over tightened the fitting, splitting the nut. Take care when replacing the damaged fitting.
  9. Hi, The boat which moors next to mine was stretched a few years ago by a well known firm in Braunston, Work was completed quickly and the result is brilliant. It really is impossible to see that lengthening work has been carried out. If I wanted a longer boat stretching is the route I would choose.
  10. Hi, I would have thought the best way was remove old bracket, make new one, drill, tap and bolt this in position, using sealant to complete the repair.

    Tappets

Probably similar. I never purchased one, it made adjustment a 'one handed 'operation. The firm specialized in Triumph tuning bits, for GT6's and Spitfires and TR models. I bought a 'camber controlled' transverse leaf spring from the to try to improve cornering in a Spitfire. Personally I have never really had a problem with adjusting tappets with a spanner and screwdriver.

    Tappets

Hi, In the early '60's I sure the handbook for Pop's Vauxhall Victor suggested 'setting the tappets with the engine running' - an almost impossible job and ruined several feeler gauges.... anyone remember the SPQR tool for setting tappets.. distributed by a specialist firm in Leighton Buzzard. This posting reminds me - must check them on the 2LW!, and I actually saw a mechanic checking the tappets on a BMC 1.8 yesterday.
  13. Hi, I have not seen one exhibited at any of the Steam Fairs or Classic shows I go to, a guy nearby does run a James 2 stroke motor cycle on a daily basis. M
  14. I recall watching that when it first came out, any info on which TV station?.

  16. Hi, I actually had a Keb, but that was Nb. named Keb! - real Kebs are useful, but bearing in mind 'H&S' difficult to store. You need a long one! and bearing in mind how often you would use it, I would try to make one which fitted on the end of a Boat shaft or quanting pole.........and then removed when not needed. Bit like one shaft fits several garden tools (Wolf range?)......... Some umbrella fixing could be used for this. l.

  18. Not sure about the orange pipe in the oil supply pipe and BSC requirements. Agree with the comments about Toby Valves.
  19. Hi, Note you mention carrying out 'improvement' work in a marina - take care on this point, many marinas now have high residential occupancy levels and have strict rules about the amount/scope of DIY work allowed. If you intend cruising the whole network take care with the length of boat as some canals have length restrictions. Good luck!. L
  20. Interesting comments about vehicle/deer collisions. The deer I mainly come across are Muntjac and Sika deer and cars hitting these do seem to be expensively damaged - air con units, especially seem vulnerable. The deer in my garden are Muntjacs, as are the ones seen in the canal locally.
  21. Tricky, there are now so many small deer that they have almost become a nuisance. One actually lives in my garden (the house is half a mile from Chesham town centre). It is a pest and eats all my runner beans when I try to grow them, but none the less it has been a 'resident' for about 3 years now and I would quite miss it if it left. I too see them drowned in the canal along the Tring summit, sadly there is not much you can do to prevent this. If you are driving and hit one, it's generally an expensive repair to the car and if you try to rescue an injured one take care, they have small sharp horns, it's best to try to cover their head with a cloth to calm them down. The RSPCA round here (Chilterns) are not very helpful with injured animals, a local animal hospital St Tigglewinkles at Haddenham are far better.
  22. Actually I am quite interested, just had a wonderful lunch, am getting a bit fed up with boating, but love my 2LW..... this engine would be hopeless in a boat but would make a great display unit. A guy does the shows with a 1L2..... and this unit would top it. Now did the Lemoncello/ Port and Stilton put me in a buying mood. Trailer plus draw bar on the car........
  23. The boat did not look that old and was generally well kept. Original steel thickness of the lockers was 4mm . I think the main fault was the water storage tank taking up all of the bow area and I suspect condensation exacerbated the problem. The two boats I have owned have had self contained free standing tanks and I have not seen rust problems like this. The Engineer was doing a brilliant job of physically getting into the small area, cutting steel out and welding in new steel bulkheads and floors.
