Thank you for this LMAO
Put a bottle in a bowl of water, let it fill with water, stand the bottle up side down keeping the kneck under water then try and lift the bottle up.
That's how I thought of it.
The Sea Otter has a vent at the top of the hollow stem bar conected to the tank, when launching and recovering this should be opened.

What's complicated about a Parsons box or a PRM500 come to that. Parsons, ain't lifted the lid in two years, PRM 10 years. Had nearly 40 years (on and off) of fixing Hydraulic systems, don't want any more. All depends what you want your boat to do.
Mine need to go forwards and stop, it's not a car ferry that self docks.
A mechanical system will nearly allways get you home.

Our boats have a very effitient and maintenance free system. A lump of 2 inch dia. bar from the gear box to the prop. No fluid, no heat generated, no valves, no pumps, no motors. Keep it simple!
We have a coal fired Esse Doric in Achilles. In winter it is brilliant, doing the cooking, heating, hot water. In summer forget it! Camping stove comes out to play.

Have you tried this http://usa.autodesk.com/autocad/trial/
When at Sea Otter there was a chap called Andrew Linall, he had some very expensive software for sea going craft. Don't know if he's still about.
