  1. Rob

I noticed no mention of mushroom vents

test the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms weekly when aboard

Check the fire extinguisher for damage and pressure loss every few months e.g. quarter

Clean the stove flue pipe every six months or sooner especially if it is having heavy use or unseasoned or softwood is being burnt

Check gas pressure weekly if you have a bubble tester

Check gas hoses routinely for signs of cracking or deterioration

Check batteries for fluid and check the restraints and that the battery connections are sound and that the terminals are covered.

Check stoves for gaps, missing plates, door glass, stove pipes for signs of escaping combustion gases.

    Check the bilges for oil

    Check engine mounts for security

    Check on engine hoses

Check fuel systems for security and leaks including

  2. It would seem that's what the insurance company might mean

take it you mean to remove base of mushroom vent ? why disturb seal if its not leaking Brasso in situ to your hearts content if you are that way inclined .
external maintainance check ropes, check fender fastenings ,touch up paintwork, clean window drain holes, clean any weed growth along waterline.

  3.

    Add to that,

Rigal (under cloth conversion of at least some of a butty) Now £45K

    Bristol (Dipper) £53K

Columba Offers over £37K, but apparently going to be very expensive to do.

plus boats like Andromeda and Malvern already discussed above.

Also Baldock, though I don't think a published price has yet been put on that.

Also Slough is rumoured to be available for anybody who fancies a really big restoration! No idea of £££s.

.......Just off to look at a bit of a wild card that is none of those!

    Yes I have!

I was genuinely surprised when you told me it was relatively lightweight work compared to Owl!

Perhaps Joshers are not for me!............

  4. My carbon monoxide alarm went off as my kabola wasn't burning properly. It seems the internal ring has slipped down so just produces a yellow flame. Any one else had a similar problem or is it just mine . Also the heat resistant paint had flaked off the top within the first week of it being fitted. I might switch back to a coal fire

  5. We've had our boat at Blisworth for just over a couple of months now and think it's a great marina with excellent facilities. It's run by a lovely chap called Steve who is really helpful. Can't fault the place.

yes meet Steve..he even found room for a 70 fter by taking out his tape measure

  6. Gregg has his own working boat and butty so I guess it's deep enough for his. There are pilings to the edge of the land/water.

You'd need to chat to Gregg about costs. Our costs have just increased by .1p per foot per week to .69p. Includes VAT and contribution to C&RT.

    Mention Martyn on Nightwatch please.

    Martyn

thanks for the info but is little more than i wanted to pay

  7. He's a bit gruff and doesn't suffer folks gladly (I assume you're talking about the Resident).

He's seen it all before and gets frustrated by boaters who don't understand much.

Well worth cultivating him - he has some interesting stories about the River.

    Back on topic

The weirs being radial gates are unlikely to pass the full boat - though they might well pass debris if and when the boat breaks up. There's a cross frame along the top when the radial is fully up and as it is lowered it will act as a bucket.

I can understand why the Lockie was - possibly not very helpful - as he said there's not a lot he cour get a line onto. Working the gates on those narrow walkways is not pleasant when the River is running - and if he "put a foot wrong" (tried to help when it's not part of his job) he'd be subject to quite a serious "disciplinary" and worse if anything happened.

People should be aware that lock staff are not there to be helpfull to boaters - their job is primarily to work the River levels and navigation is a distraction. Perhaps that's why EA would like to get rid of that function and pass it to CaRT - who IMHO would be quite out of their depth (pun intended).

The Thames is something special and provides a lot of joy for boaters (who pay for the privilege) and even more who do not and it would be incredibly sad if staff were removed on the altar of "cost Saving".

Sorry to rant, but this issue needs a wider audience and I'll take any opportunity to make the point.

Let's hope levels subside soon and any further damage is minimised.

all I can offer is make as many preps u can make including scaffold poles to stop u floating over the bank edge and also guiding u back down when it drops off. Make sure lines are secure and on a strong anchor point and are sprung
