  1. To throw in my slightly late tuppence worth. I'm an IT manager and work from (floating) home once a week, plus being a gamer geek have various streaming services inc 4k video. I bought a TCL LinkHub which has 4 & 5G capability, paired this with a sim only vodaphone deal which has unlimited data plus uncapped speed. I'm moored in a 4G only spot at the moment and speed tests are 100-150Mbps on WiFi and 250-350Mbps for hardwired devices. The router is inside the boat, not in a window and doesn't have an external aerial. It is bigger than the little dongles but has a couple of ethernet ports, does 2.4 and 5Ghz wifi bands and will support way more connections than i'll ever need.
  2. Absolutely, applies in all sorts of situations that have the potential to go wrong. I mentioned the rope as it was somebody claiming to be experienced that did something that should have been common sense not to do, let alone actual experienced hands
  3. Even as a totally green boater I know not to tie off a line tightly when the boats going to lower...thatโ€™s simple common sense. Lucky you were keeping an eye on your helper
  4. Well that doesn't sound like fun.....I shall be doing everything very carefully for some time I imagine as this is my first boat & first experience boating. After that it'll be standard issue carefully ๐Ÿ™‚
  5. Well.....I bought a boat so it looks like i'll be having those dreams next week ๐Ÿ˜ต
  6. Well they say there is going to be a shortage of turkeys this year so there may be a solution.....
  7. yep, was more thinking of those who might want a mooring all of their own. Prices down here in london seem to be crazy.
  8. The ironic thing is they have apparently done away with a lot of moorings.
  9. Thanks....i think ๐Ÿ™‚ First boat and never lived on one before so there's a bit of apprehension along with this
  10. I've just had an offer accepted on a boat. It's going to be saving me over an hour each day, or more, on the commute so i'll be able to cook more of my own food and not having so many takeaways....so i'll be eating better even when i'm working ๐Ÿ™‚
  11. Between covid and going into winter my timing does leave something to be desired. I think the more variations I can observe and work with the more I can think about what'll work best for me Thanks for that, i'll have a watch in a bit
  12. It's also stuff like how to work the locks properly, knots for tying up etc. The practical knowledge that people have. I could figure out the locks but wouldn't know if i was doing it the most efficient way. I've been reading the forum posts for info about condensation, solar etc but the practical tricks and tips are harder to come by.
  13. i viewed a narrowboat and had to turn totally sideways in sections and my chest and back were both dragging along the walls.....i'm built for widebeam ๐Ÿ™‚
  14. i'm thinking one row down the centre to keep sides clear to walk down it's going to be full time liveaboard and my shoulders need the extra space ๐Ÿ™‚
  15. Fingers crossed on this but i'm hopefully about to buy first boat, 10' widebeam, and i'll be up on the roof taking measurements to figure out a solar layout that leaves walkways to the sides and avoids things sticking out of the roof
