  1. I prefer the "chuck it up" ref the windlass after realising that my attention was more on saving the £20 windlass falling in/gripping it/is it tucked in my shirt ok rather than than overall safety. Ie illogical diversion of thought.
  2. The Churnet is very benign at the mo. I own a stretch and monitor it daily.
  3. Shepperton PO were happy for us to use it as per visit there yesterday. One off - spare part for a generator.
  4. ta - will pop in the local PO and ask.
  5. Does anyone have a list of those post offices that do Poste Restante service? Seems difficult to find. TA!
  6. After years of good service, now intermittantly when I press the "on" button on the generator control panel it does not turn on /energise/light up the 'on' light so I cannot start it. There is a fully charged starter battery. Any clues what I should check.
  7. Yes Pearley Very kind of you sir; but I have lots of spares - just not the vacuum switch/rocker. This is the unit that's faulty. I can get it to work (and holds a very good vacuum) but it soon goes out of adjustment (two chrome nut adjuster) The water stays there, the vacuum is good and holds all day. Seems the plastic lobe on the "rocker" is just worn away.
  8. Anyone had this issue? I adjust the rocker but it still cycles. Think the vacuum switch and rocker may be worn. Trouble is, they discontinued spares iirc
  9. Anyone recommend a place I can book boat blacking 62' narrowboat on or near Caldon Canal, Cheddleton? Prob for next season.
  10. The Coppermill Cottage was up for sale a few years ago. Not a very sympathetic renovation iirc.
  11. From website "Staffordshire Past Track"
  12. Shame I really enjoyed those - social history.
  13. Thanks. The fish pass is now complete. Unfortunately it silted up soon after the trumpeting faded away. It took about 18 months for them to de-silt it - which was done last summer. It sits inside/under the pump house - it also has a camera tracking any migration (red cross). Upper and lower entrances to fish pass shown. Yes the canal route is clearly visible in quite a lot of locations.
  14. If you leave the Station - turn left on the rail track, under the bridge and it's on the left towards Crumpwood Weir. The cranked over fence is the base of Alton Towers. A bit further on and the bed of canal is very clear and an old flood lock too (Carringtons Lock) one of a pair used to cross the Churnet (see below).
  15. Be my guest Bucc. Thank you. One forgotton Wharf that leads up a hill (Slain Hollow) to Alton Towers.
  16. Yes please. I can do it from your maps on your site?
  17. Thanks Tim. Yes seen that I thing Bucc had a similar one for just Canals. I think what I'm after is prob too specific. Looking at a bit below the farm here in Alton. There where two local wharfs (Mill wharf and a wharf for Lord Shrewsbury) and an alledged weir from Churnet into the Canal.
  18. Thanks bucc. I tried both Waterstones and the Canal Bookshop Audlem. Both out of stock.
  19. Does anyone know where I could view the original route of the Uttoxeter canal in some detail? I guess a plan must have been part of the Act?
