  1. In Stoke itself have moored several times at Westport Lake which is very quiet but a distinct lack of pubs, in fact I don't think I've ever stopped at a pub in the Centre of Stoke except for the beefeater type one at Festival Park. If you stop before Harecastle Tunnel the Blue Bell at Kidsgrove is a real ale Mecca - I highly recommend it. The Romping Donkey at Hassall Green is worth a visit. Don't forget the Caldon - my favourite canal! Tim
  2. I tend to use the Microsoft equivalent, the Birds Eye views can be brilliant: http://maps.live.com/ Tim
  3. Yes it is. Last time I was there there were no empty moorings and I have also been on a number of WRG working weekends where we have created additional moorings and improved the facilities for the existing ones. Tim
  4. It is worth pointing out that before the IWA the management of the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation its owners were in administration, the administrators were busy selling off all the assets to pay creditors and the navigation was in imminent threat of closure as no one else was interested in keeping it as a going concern. 6. From my own experience in London I believe that you are being unfair to a number of very hard working people. With regards to Barge moorings in the South East the local IWA, mainly in the form of the late Mike Stevens, put an amazing amount of work in when the Downings Road barge moorings campaign on the Thames when they were under threat. We are/have been very vocal in getting resources from BW and the Lower Lea Project to sort out the weed problems on the Lea and the Bow Back Rivers. Tim
  7. Been looking through my photos from my early boating days and have found a few photos that I would like to add to my working boats photo project if only I could identify them: 01 This one was taken at Athestone in September 1986: 02 Coventry canal 1st January 1986 (Butty is 'Cheam') 03 Taken at the same time (01/01/86) Any help appreciated. Tim
  8. What a load of cobblers, I have been on IWA committees for many years and in every case they have been desperate for new blood, if anything people keep quiet at social meetings in case they get co-opted onto a committe! From what I read about other waterways organisations they are in the same position. In what way were you prevented from joining the committees of these organisations? It is far too often the lack of active members that restricts the work of voluntary waterways organisations. Tim
  9. Not sure about web sites but I find that ringing the apprpriate lock keepers/office will find you the most accurate and up to date information Office & Lock keepers telephone numbers for the Severn & Lower & Upper Warwickshire Avon are on page 15 of the BW River Severn Guide: http://www.waterscape.com/media/documents/20401 Tim
  10. The Avon is semi tidal to above Hanham lock, know from bitter experience. Tim
  11. We also insure with Towergate Mardon, we gat charged £30 extra when we go to the Boat show in the Royal docks with conditions such as we cannot go if the wind is more than force 3 (not that you would want to!) Tim
  12. Nicholson did once do a guide, I had to get mine 2nd hand (There is one for sale here) Imray guides also cover these rivers. Tim
  13. There is an extract in the current (September) 'Canal Boat' magazine. Tim
  14. It's James Whittaker, a director of Peel Group, it's been reported in every waterways magazine recently, details: http://www.manchestershipcanalswim.co.uk Tim
  15. The 9% refers to the Network Access Agreement fee that marinas pay. details here Tim

  19. They were on the front of the boat and on the side facing the canal (78p/litr for disel BTW - we filled up from him on the Monday) In fact the owner Brian got his niece to enrol on the signwriting course at the festival to produce a 'coal' sign - the cheek! Tim
  20. I have a picture at of them together at the 2007 Braunston show, will post when I can but am off boating straight from work so it might be a while. Tim
  21. Need to leave a car in Worcester for best part of a week from tomorrow evening to go boating. Does anyone have any suggestions as close as possible to Diglis basin, it's a company car so I am not too precious about it but I would like it to still be there when I get back! Tim
