  4. If you are interested in old railway carriages, trainspotters are lightweights Richard
  5. Dave, thanks for being our man-on-the-spot. Fascinating MORE: If you are coming up the W&B into Brum, and watch the railway lines you'll spot when the main lines peel off to the left, and the old line to Central goods stayed parallel to the canal. There are extra bridge arches under the roads for it Without looking it up, I thought it went to Holliday Wharf Richard
  6. Three completely different carriages. The left has fixed ventilators, the centre has roof vents the right has a high, elliptical roof Richard

  10. You are overthinking this. Every car takes the water for the heater from before the thermostat*, as does nearly every boat Richard * I thought I'd get the air-cooled engine comment in first

I'm not sure about gravy, but the stuff to get soup of a rope is Scrope Scrope is so strong that no rope is too long Now, soup off a hoop is a totally different proposition Richard

Maybe. I doubt there was much of a slope on the roof of a stagecoach. It's as well to not be too precious or prescriptive with these terms. First off, they usually have a highly specific meaning within a profession that isn't clear to outsiders, and secondly they get bastardised outside of the profession. I wouldn't be surprised to find that cant has a French origin, many coachbuilding terms have Richard

Cant is also a word used in carriage building, and following on from that into car construction. So the cant rail is the reinforcing member that runs along the join between the roof and the sides. These days it usually includes the top of the door opening. Richard
  18. Neither mince nor other stolen boats is helping much here. Do we have any more information about this boat to work with? Richard

And perhaps because there was never a single, unified language of the canals. The idea that there was seems to be part of a modern desire to capture the 'true' past and communicate that as fact. Richard
