  1. Certainly wouldnt describe your post as offensive, being Rochdale born and bred I have to agree that the Manchester section will probably always suffer from inner city problems, however, once heading towards castleton the views open up as the climb towards the pennines kicks off proper. Seeing the canal derelict for so long it was always a wonder to me if it would ever re open especialy seeing the low bridges that the council replaced the old brick ones with and where the canal was culverted in other places, So i really think its time i got off my chuff and attempt a cruise. By the way. Does anyone know what they plan to do with Clegg Hall? Last time i saw it, it was still all overgrown and blackend, no roof and just a few chickens to keep the ghosts company. Now it looks totally transformed.
  2. Our house was in penistone avenue off Queensway with the garden backing onto the canal. It was well used by us kids as a quick route to smithy bridge then up to hollingworth lake. But like you say the only history lessons we ever had abot the canal was from me dad. By the way was very disapointed lwith last nights Locks and Quays program. he told us at the begining that we were in for a treat going from slatocks to the summit.......He set off. spoke to some bloke about plant life, showed a horse boat going to cheshire. never once mentioned going thrugh castleton or even Rochdale. Just totally blanked the town. I know theres not many mills left along the way but come on......why was it called the rochdale???? you mightve shown us at least some of the town section...TUT!!!
  3. Just checked on me down load thingy...says...13.19 mbs......whats all that about? trust it will say when i reach 2GB then its incomunicado agin till the bill comes through
  4. lol...typical view of an old tub owner
  5. How good is this walk and web..... cant believe i have been incomunicado for the last 12 mths until i discovered this......fast...easy to install....dont even have to bother with an ISP will it bite me on the bum for being on line for so long?
  6. Your very welcome, have done limehouse to teddington a few times and am always amazed at how the river changes once you get past lambeth bridge and away from the trip boats..enjoy the cruise, and if you have a vid camera, secure it running to the roof to film the passage through central london......by the way. lime house also allow overnight along the dock wall for free...no services but ive never had probs...St Katherines dock also good good luck...let us know how you get on
  7. I agree with the issue even though i shouldve been in bed 3 hours ago, dont appologise, you have a right to your view and to expect a certain ammount of civility, its just thaton the example you gave. IMHO the perpertrator did his/her best to be civil. keep your topics coming...i enjoy your view even if i dont always agree.....on another note, had to share a lock security key once on the leicester section as we dint have one..is that the same as swinging?.......Thames barge match this weekend, Gravesend to Shivering sands and back if you fancy watching some fantastic old barges under full canvas.... emblem leaves chatham at 10 to catch em off southend pier....pinkers in the wardroom at 11
  8. your correct in that you want to cruise down on the ebb tide, try and find the time of high tide at either richmond or teddington which will probably be shown on the PLA web site somewhere as a timedifference to london bridge and use that as a guide, alternativly i always used to phone teddington lock, limehouse or brentford depending where i intended to enter from and ask their advice. always found them very helpfull....if your doing it, then go all the way to limehouse. its a fantastic trip and not half as scary as its made out. prior to having vhf i always phoned woolwich radio (now london vts) to let them know i was entering the river and my intended destination.....they will tell you of any works in progress etc
  9. very true, at least it feels like a living thing , not some plastic stick together kit, mind you theres many a time i been tempted to sheath her in steel, normally during heavy weather when those drips hit your nut during the night.
  10. lol....are they bubbles or just wind? Yep, thats the old tub...1934 forbes of sandhaven herring boat. gardner 4L3. the chap who sold her to me said 'never buy a wooden boat'
  11. lol.. hey stone...i just got in from working nights, had a couple of liveners before bed and i think your being a bit over sensitive, you have a right to expext some kind of courtesy late at night but in an area such as you moored, you gotta expect the occaisional disturbance when the pub turns out. we used to visit the pub then push off a bit furtherup (before drinking up time i might add) and continue our festivities in more secluded surroundings, and after a couple of sherberts you get the munchies and, i acknowledge these chums were hirers but not every one can afford expensive inverters or battery management systems so the genny is the main source of power for the karaoke machine and 72" widescreen plasma plus dvd. these days for me i have an old lister 1 cylinder chuffer for my 24 volt system which makes a right racket so i invested in a 4 stroke petrol genny which is well quiet....never had any complaints while at anchor in stangate creek Oh how i miss the canals, no tide or jetskis to worry about. but seriously. isolated moorings are far more rewarding if peace and quiet is your thing. try limehouse basin the night before hitting the thames and after the police helicopter has gone over head for the 30th time that night complete with night light you will realise how welcome it is to be away from everyone. ps you aint annoyed me,
  12. Thats correct so far, only detain the boat but not the crew.......how on earth is that gonna work? and whats the penalty going to be? 12 mths Disqualified steering
  13. The current law states it is an offence to endanger a vessel if under the influence....key words are endanger a vessel, so currently you can be as mashed as you like providing you dont have a prang. as for enforcement, in a similar move to the chocolate teapots called community support officers, the Gov intend to recruit marine enforcement officers. These can range from local harbour masters to marina managers, they wont have a power to breathalyse, only to detain you pending the arrival of that overstretched constable
  14. Mornin I tended to find it was the opposite during my times on the cut. I found the majority of hirers to be very 'etiqute wise' slowing down past moored boats, waiting at locks to pair up.....how many privately owned boats have you come across who shut the gates as you approach? Plenty. Most of it seems because they concerned about getting the blacking scratched i suppose and seeing me approach in my 1975 ex anglo welsh harborough marine 50 footer brought the pains on :/ Ive even had my mooring pins ripped out by a private boat giving it high revs, digging his stern in, using more fuel and still only doing 3mph while sucking the water away from the bank. I think most of us must've started out as hirers, thats how we got the bug. some companies are better than others. some hirers are careless but so are some private owners They remind me of the same kind of folk who get behind the wheel of their car and cant see past the bonnet. never looking behind them to see whats going on with their wash. Its still the same for me now on the tidal medway. There is a six knot limit on my stretch which is also still used by large coasters and dredgers, they never cause a ripple, however, get your flying bridge motorboater coming past and everything on the pontoon is bouncing around........ahhh ats better, cant beat a good whinge first thing in the morning
