Do agree with you, polite people are not inclined to use that sort of term.
The great majority of members would agree with you but would not wish to be vociferous, hence they remain silent,as one does
CT
Maybe we should give your "great majority of members" a voice then. Create a Poll so they dont have to remain silent

Discussion has not died here, only discussion has been stopped about certain subjects, and similar rules about politics and religion are applied to many other forums.
And having looked in "the other place"; no thanks! Their CWDF section is pitiful! (which will probably get a comment there!)
baring in mind it was created by someone regularly being told to start his own forum if he wasnt happy, and it became a place where those excomunicated from here were able to have a right to reply which they couldnt here, it was always going to start off with a bit of a bang, which wasnt helped by sock puppet posters from here creating abusive threads.
It wont suit everybody, especially those who like a 'Report button' but at least people have the ability to post there if they choose to without fear or favour.

It's funny how what works on paper turns out to be rubbish in real life though.
As you have criticised the over moderation of Just Canals in the past (and mocked the ban on mentioning its name) it surprises me that it was your research that prompted the death of free discussion on this one.
Looks like i'm going to run out of greenies pretty quick again today

You can knock up quite a tune tapping various componants of old engine.
I have an old mate who holds me in much esteem when we broke down once on the Peak Forest in our Dawncraft Dandy.
The Honda outboard suddenly lost all drive to the prop.
He tells the story that armed with just a hammer a tapping ita few times it was miraculously fixed, when in reality all i was doing was replacing the shear pin.

Proxy greenie for John V.
Greenie passed on cheers

John V on the other forum suggests this :-
He needs to be told that if he gets 12V on the solenoid input to check the other terminal that goes to the starter itself ....... if 0 then solenoid bollixed if 12v starter bollixed possibly sticky or worn brushes so try a tap with a hammer as first (temporary) cure.
and you can also tell him that what comes from banning people-: hope this helps- 3

One can feel the Mod's Ban Hammer waiting to strike.

The Brexit thread has now been locked as a result of complaints on this thread. All political debate has now been extinguished. Happy now?

Any person having hired a gas bottle will have signed an agreement with Calor, and cannot have a reasonable belief that they can refill the gas bottle.
Any person who has "inherited" the gas bottle didn't come by it legitimately himself. The previous boater had no right to part company with the bottle to him.
I would need to look at a bottle, but I think that they actually say on the bottle "property of and only to be refilled by"
As above, Breach of contract.
-
As an aside, given that these adaptors have no legitimate purpose and exist only to enable people to appropriate gas bottles they don't own, is owning one "going equipped"
Only in the Mysterious world of Dave C Mayall

In relation to the gas bottle;
(a) Is there a belief that there is a right in law to appropriate the gas bottle?
( Is there a belief that Calor would approve of it?
© Is it impossible to discover who owns the gas bottle?
As the answer to all three is "no", the appropriation is dishonest.
You are assuming the answer to a is No.
Any person having hired their gas bottle or inherited one with a boat may well have a reasonable belief that they can refill the bottle. Their appropriation is not dishonest. It may breach the Hire agreement and invoke civil law but its not criminal and not dishonest. Nor is their intention to permanently deprive.
Same for your shopping trolly. Youve paid your pound, and unless there are signs or a physical barrier preventing you from removing it then a person may well have a genuine belief that they can use it around the town for the rest of their shopping.
Not dishonest
-
I have appropriated that trolley.
It is no different from appropriating a gas bottle.
But not dishonestly........which is what you keep ignoring...the dishonest appropriation of property
-
So, you are saying ALL the elements are missing?
Do you claim that a cas bottle is NOT property then?
Or do you claim that it doesn't belong to Calor?
Perhaps you claim that it hasn't been appropriated.
Is the appropriation Dishonest?
Is there an intention to permanently deprive?
It doesnt matter how you try and spin it Dave, Its not theft unless the perp is going to 'sing like a birdy' in interview and cop a plea.
As george says above, Take and drive away had to be introduced because joy riders apparently didnt intend to permanently deprive.
-
Same here. And as said less paranoid, costly and awkward than some security measures mentioned
T C
Well if you all want to really get paranoid you might as well remove your licence from the window as your location can be gleaned from that, and while your at it repaint the boat in a dull unkempt colour to make it less attractive to all those boat tealeafs out there.
Come on people

Read my earlier post, and tell me exactly which element of theft is missing.
The Dishonest appropriation of property belonging to another
and
With the intention of permenantly depriving the other of it.

It really depends on how good the hire boat was in the first place, some are excellent value, but others were built to a fairly low spec, just good enough to survive the projected hire period. Like any other boat, you really need to know who built the shell and who undertook the fitout.
Most replies by ex-hire boat owners seem to pooh pooh your post......any recomendations as to which those hire companies are that only build for the life of the hire period?

We're here for you Nick

One of the bridges on the South Oxford has a massive bit knocked out of the arch on the offside that I'm pretty sure is exactly the same profile as a hire boat roof. It even has a sloping side and curved top
Richard
Reminding us of those lovely additions to south oxford hireboats.....Bridge bars

In a way that is correct, however if you think about what defines a canal 'width' it is the locks not the actual width of the canal.
The L&L in lots of places is actually now not much different to a 'narrow' canal. There is therefore less margin for error with a wide beam boat.
Exactly, Locks and bridge holes.
If you watch most noob narrowboaters on narrow canals, as they approach locks and bridge holes they bob around on the back deck checking how much room they have either side. As the boater gains more experience and knows the width of the boat, that bobbing around stops and they know at what point they will go through the gap.
Its the same on wide boats. The gaps available are still relative to the width of the boat and as experience is gained you know the visual markers of your boat that allow you to line up and enter the gap correctly.
Noobs will be noobs on whatever width boat they choose to cruise until they gain more experience by lots of lovely practice

Hiring a wide beam boat on a wide canal is surely no different from hiring a narrowbeam boat on a narrow canal.
Are we all sheep?

******Warning****** Flounce Alert**********
Joining this discussion late I had a number of multi quotes ready to reply but reading the last 12 pages most of them have been covered by others and i've run out of greenies.
The only thing I have left to add is........I am shocked and saddened by PaulC's post and it implications but not surprised as it confirms many of my suspicions as how CWDF was being run.
For the majority of you left on this forum I wish you well, for those with blinkers on I hope you will finally have your 'road to damascus' moment.
