  1. On what logic do you base this theory, a rough arsed conversion of 8 imperial inches to SI (System International) units (metric) is 200mm, or to be more precise, 8 x 25.4 = 203.2mm - which is less than one eight of an inch error on conversion. But! at the end of the day, these are but cheap inferior adjustable spanners, which are shunned by by all professional fitters!
  2. We were passing northwards on the GU, just below Great Linford, SWMBO was at the tiller, and I was on the side of the stearn, we w saw what we presumed to be 3 dogs, owned by a woman, and a male cyclist, one dog (greyhound) stooped to have a piss, and one of the other dogs promptly put all 4 legs together and pumped out poop, the woman started to walk away, so SWMBO yelled at her, pick up that poop! The woman replied, it's only wee! the guy cycled off and the two dogs promptly followed him, the pooper was one of this mans dogs, SWMBO shouted, but only got a vee sign for her troubles.... Rob
  3. Hi, This is interesting, because I've heard, that there are 38 off-shore wind turbines installed off the coast of Scotland, supplied by US firm Clipper, and all have them have failed due to the fact that the gearbox's cannot tolerate blustery wind conditions - we're not talking about light-weight bits of kit - the gearbox's weigh over 28 tons. Rob
  4. Whichever yard you choose, please ensure that your boat will be fully insured for craining into the water, it is not unknown for boats to slip out of the lifting slings, also insist that full width timbers are used to rest the boat upon, it has been know for some yards to use railway sleepers (ok for narrowboats), but no use to a broadbeam, broadbeeam boats have been damaged this way, even resulting in newly fitted kitchens being badly damaged by the bottom of the boat being distorted by using too short timbers. 6. Hi all, Does anyone know where I can buy one of these from (apart from Midland Chandlers)? At over £60.00 they seem a rip off for what is a basic 3 lever rim lock. Many thanks, Rob

  9. Hi Biggles, No, we do not have underfloor heating on board our narrow boat, but, however, we do have free underfloor and water line cupboards cooling (very handy for chilling beer, ales and fine wines) This works a treat all year round. Rob
  10. Having read the weather forecast, this week, I'll be re-waterproofing my poncho, ready for the predicted, washed out bank holiday..... But on an up beat! The poncho works really well, it keeps both me and the stern well of NB Orkney well dry! Rob BSP! How can you qualify for retirement, I saw you in Leamington Spa about a year ago, and you only looked about 30! And all the best with the dentist, I imagine that he/she will hurt your bank account more than you! Rob
  11. The trick with tunnels is to steer into mid width and give the trottle plenty of welly, the resulting bow waves will then tend to self centralize the boat, which makes progress much easier. Rob
  12. Sadly, there were no "cc'rs" around....., but there was a good 10 craft moored around the corner. Rob
  13. or opposite a winding hole, but there are usually buoys and signs stating no mooring between buoys. Rob
  14. How dare you suggest that I have neither of those items! I've had my BW cycle permit far longer than NB Orkney! Rob Thanks for the advice Dennis, I'm still laughing now, but, your comments are sadly true! Rob Much the same as what Jim suggested, it wasn't intentional, but I did ride through it, miss timed my steering and went through a long, deep puddle. By the time I returned home, both the bike and I needed a thorough wash down. Thanks for your concern, Rob
  15. Picture this, An empty towpath, heading along the GU from Leamington Spa to Radford bottom lock, it has been raining heavily, so there are lots of deep puddles on the towpath.... Come across a very wide puddle, from hedgerow to concrete side of cut, there is quite a large distance form the tow path to the concrete side and in the optimum place to ride the bike up is a large, steaming dog's trud, do you do either: A). Ride past the offending mass and risk coming off bike . Ride over the trud and risk getting spattered in offensive, disgusting mess? Rob

  17. Guhring is another good name - I totally agree, Guhring manufacture superb drills - the size of their manual would make very good ballast! Colbolt drills are normally 8% Colbolt added to High Speed Steel drills and are normally referred to as HSCO drills. Rob
  18. I took it to mean that they had a stop in order to smoke some grass (and not the type/breed that common or garden lawns are made from...) Rob

  20. Hi! SWMBO has the ultimate accessory, a Singer treadle Sewing Machine - the type that is physically driven by one's right foot and a can of lager per hour, which drives the reciprocating motion which is essential for the formation of good, secure stitching. She claims this activity both very fulfilling and satisfying! Rob

  22. I have found manors cost a fortune!! But! Not manners? Rob
  23. Hi, the fixing that your describing sounds like a Torx headed bolt, it should be an easy affair to determine the size ant one from Halfrauds. Rob
  24. Tut Tut! As a gentleman, you should offer your partner the opportunity of "going on top" and suffer the gravel rash to your bum! (After-all a small price to pay!) Rob
  25. If you have a skin cooled engine, I'll predict that the noises that you are experiencing are due to thermal syphoning from your calorifier, through the engine and out through the skin cooler. If you find that the temperature of the hot water is significantly cooler in the morning, compared with the previous night's temperature, this is the result of thermal syphoning, in which case you need to fit a non-return valve to the calorifier.
