  1. Would the new charity be responsible for there redundancy pay and pension then or would they be payed by the government.Perhaps a probationary period of 3 months would be the way to go.
  2. Happy and prosperous new year to all.
  3. I know nothing about this subject but could it be that the difference in the metals of the cylinder and the hull has some effect on the rusting?
  4. I am sure the general comment would be that you need to check the other boat builders as well.Never pay up front but in stages for work done and make sure you have title to the work done in case the company goes bust.Visit the build often during the build and also see if you can talk to previous owners before you agree to the build. You might find it useful to youse the search button on this page and look at the other threads to do with new having a new boat built.
  5. great photo's.seeing pictures of a reconstruction certainly helps illuminate my reading on the subject in some ways they are clearer than diagrams. Thank you for the updates.
  6. Jem bates has what he says is the last wooden working boat with wooden knees eg Blackthorn rose in the for sale section.
  7. I did not know him but he seemed well loved. It is always sad when a link to the past sails off into the sunset.Best wishes to his family and i hope things go well.
  8. The one still capable of floating or being used as a ship not a museum piece. You could go spiritually and as long as the spirit of the boat is there then it is the same boat, probably best achieved by the gradual restoration rather than the complete rebuild using nothing from the old structure.
  9. My link _offtopic: well slightly this may be of interest also. It is good to see the build progress on these fine old boats.

ouch sounds painful hope you get all healed up soon .
  11. yes great pictures and to think they were almost lost.I had it in mind that it was a lot older but it is interesting that aesthetics were considered then were as now embellished building seem to dominate.
  12. wow yes thanks for the links linseed oil is certainly a useful product. It will take quite a bit of reading to absorb all that is there.

  14. LOl answered my own question looking in colors of the cut it was varnished afterwards. i suppose the badly polluted atmosphere in cities would not have done paintwork any favors.
  15. i looked at a boat building forum that said that many believed that painting a boat rendered the wood waterproof but that it was not so and a marine vanish had to be used over the top of it,did the paint on narrow boats have this protection over the paintwork or was the paint different then.

  17. LOL you could trail with a 70 foot narrowboat you just need a crane and a very long lorry to do it the wilderness boats and some of the sea otter boats were advertised as trainable.
  18. I think that depends to some extent on the vet but there are dog homes and charities that will try to re home or in the end put them down in a painless manner. This is just cruel, sick and depressing to think about.
  19. Yes it was the lock in particular that i think cause some worry. It should be consider after all that British waterways has to deal with "dangerous water" as one of the trustees put it. Certainly if games such as conkers and British bulldog have been banned from schools such activities would be thought to dangerous.Though as said there probably would be no legal question as far as the rafts are concerned.
  20. Do you think that the makeshift rafts the kids were on would be allowed in a canal today? It did seem to be far simpler times probably more fun less red tape and health and safety. {takes off rose tinted specs]
  21. But they are the same people who are running it now .What is going to change when it becomes the new charity.Besides it's a British tradition to do so.
  22. You have to ask who the volunteers are likely to be.The unemployed who can only do a max of 15 hours a week or risk there money being stopped, the Retired, and the imprisoned. Then you can add enthusiasts that can do stints every now and again/regular weekends. In this they will be competing with other calls for volunteers. I really do not mind the idea of volunteering in principal but it would i think be annoying to know that your work was going to keep the less than competent well/over payed in there job,it would still annoy even if they were doing a good job.Perhaps the restoration groups will then have to run the canals afterwards with toll houses at the junction with the BW waters and collecting mooring fees, maybe even having a boatyard to generate it's income. The towpaths could be maintained by the fishing, cycling and rambling organizations.LOL Then again maybe not
  23. Things like the BBC programs, could be made cheaply available at least in this country as they have already had there production costs payed back over and over again in the case of the more popular series, but the prices for such as Dr who [old series] remains stubbornly high.Admittedly some have been updated somewhat with the addition of better special effects or cut scenes being added back so they are again worth a higher price tag. I guess i am saying that if they have done extra work on a program then it is worthy of a higher price tag.Others should be sold at a lower price and some long time out of date stuff should be available for download. Some of what i have bought i would not have done had i seen or listened to them first and some of that which you see on the net i would buy afterwards.Another consideration is that a download will never increase in value like a rare record or CD would, most things are shades of grey rather than black and white as far as my view on downloads.
  24. Presumably the old boat stoves burnt coal when they could get it.i suppose the brickettes are a bit like coke which is coal with the gasses removed. Could very well be wrong as i am trying to remember back to when i was a young kid and we had a coal fire. There was various grades of coal then coke and slack which was small broken pieces of coal which you used to bank up the fire at night often dampened.
