It has been proven (in the past) that whilst lock keepers (at least on the Trent) 'take down' your boat name, registration number and date of expiry of your licence, no use is made of this information and their note-books are not linked in any way to the enforcement / monitoring system.

There was a thread sometime ago about a boater (who started the thread) who was 'under enforcement' for non-movement, having travelled 'hundreds' of miles up the Trent and Witham and then back down the Trent. There was no record of his movements.

One of the Lockies who was a forum member said he would provide him with evidence / support his case to prove that he had in fact passed his lock on a number of occasions during the period in question.

I would have no idea where to find an EO - I have not (knowingly) ever seen one, the only C&RT representatives I have had any dealings with in 100s of miles per year that I cruise have been volunteer lockies and bankside volunteers trying to make me be a 'friend'.

I am sure if I went into the Red-Bull offices (for example) and asked them to come out whilst I photographed them next to my boat, or asked them to write me a letter saying they had witnessed me (and the boat) outside their offices I would get short-shrift.

maybe clocking in stations around the system

  2. Low audio log, please pretty please.

I made the idiot mistake of helping a mate with his fowler showmans engine a few weeks ago, you can imagine the questions. I'm going to write them up and put them on an information board for the next show. Just a couple that spring to mind:-

    How fast does it go?

    Why is it so quiet?

Why has it got two generators?

How much water coal does it use.

Why do you leave it running all the time?

    Etch etc etc.

    Oh the answers?

20mph, dunno mate they are all that quiet, one generator is the exciter for the main one. Coal/ water depends on how fast we go.

As for leaving it running, the usual answer is "it ain't got a starter switch".

Anyone who shows genuine interest I'll spend all the time in the world with. Eg one couple had their young daughter with them and we had no young lass for the ladies race. She was about thirteen, really really enjoyed racing around the arena in a fifteen ton smoke belching monster. Couldn't believe we let her drive it. Took her back to parents covered in soot smuts, and an ear to ear grin, my mate got a long hand written letter from her last week thanking us. But again she really wanted to know what hard work the old drivers had in the old days.

Doh well thats all my questions gone LOL

Am I the only one who has read the other side of this disagreement? It seems obvious to me that a volunteer operation could not be dovetailed into a time-critical programme. Whether it was desirable or not, logistical considerations have scuppered the chances on this one. Perhaps someone else who has professional experience of construction project management, against a budget, would care to comment?

That's the CRT view, anyway, as I understand it.

i did read it and i agree to some extent but Lawence was only suggesting doing some of the carrying not the digging up and making good. It does sound more like they want to keep them on so that they can fill there volunteer quoter . That attendance is dwindling suggests that what is given is less than interesting to the people carrying it out,you volunteer usual because you find things interesting so it is failing at the first hurdle

  4. You also need to be careful of what pesticides have been used on horse paddocks. aminopyralid based herbicides are sometimes used on horse paddocks to control weeds, but pass through the horse and can be present in manure - allotment holders are v. careful about where they get manure to avoid this, so I'd be dead careful about shovelling up random dung off the path.

The Rhs website suggests it is broken down by microbes in the soil so well rotted manure should be ok ,but i take your point that chemicals in the manure could effect plants if you are not carefull.

I very much doubt horse riders would do anything about the manure, particularly if they are on the tall hunt horses as the would have difficulty getting back on. i do like the idea of joined up footpaths throughout Britain but it would have to include funding and hopefully a widening of the paths

  5. not visited the pen museum no real interest in it. back to back houses no soho house yes transport museum never really new where that was and i have visited the jewellery museum kind of ok. Museum and art gallery yes,Blacksley hall yes ditto saholm mill and Aston hall it could work depending on priceing. The old science museum i have been to but the new one was charging a shed load of money for nothing of interest to me and i had heard that a lot of the exhibits were broken .

sorry i assumed after reading of some of the land owners opposition etc that it was a no goer. I hope it does well.I will give the site another read probably got the wrong end of the stick.

  7. Wow, some bitter comments there! I'd like to point out that

A, it's ridiculous to talk about putting 'another boat on the system' as it is already on the system

B, Ferret does not belong to CRT, it is still within a trust along with all the other boats at the museum, CRT merely run the museum as relying on donations wasn't sufficient (shown by the bitterness that has been displayed here because a CHARITY is asking for donations...)

C, the cost of restoring one of the wooden boats in the collection would be enormous. But as someone mentioned, they are very close to receiving funds for both Mossdale and George

D, it is hoped that Merak will be next in line, and once Ferret has been completed, she will be available to tour the system extensively

E, ferret is ideal for us trainees to work on, being able to do everything from the surveys and documentation to woodwork and steel work

I find it quite embarrassing that only £500 has been raised so far and yet everyone moans about the state of the boat. The museum, in particularly the yard has turned a massive corner a couple of years ago with employing Dave Linney and a proper plan of on going maintenance of all the boats has been implemented, the only thing we struggle with is funding.

And for all those who slate CRT, that yard would not be there were it not for Tony Hales who has time after time reached into his own pocket to fund us.

And Lawrence, what on earth are you going on about horse manure? That pitch and tar was made by ourselves, ie not bought in pre mixed, and the Oakham has been sprayed with Stockholm Tar. The Hairy Bikers wanted something for TV, and so may not be entirely representative of how we do things, but there are people at the yard with a wealth of experience who know what they're doing

would it not be possible to offer the services of the training arm to the public. You would get your experience and historic boat owners would get a much needed service. i think i did hear that this was the original idea or am i thinking of a different regime .

  8. So many charities so little money and thats just in the canal world, how do you decide. I would rule out contributing to the people running the canals so that just leaves the various restoration trusts and boat restoration societies i suppose and that is down to individual taste, priority.

i suppose putting this right then selling it to the highest bidder and using the proceeds to repair the next boat may be one way to go.They might make enough to do a wooden boat then.

  9.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask what it is that the forum would like me to say or do at the NUF meeting on the 12th September at The Bond, Birmimgham , B5 5SE |between 10:30 and 12:30

    Richard

You could ask if they are recouping the costs of vandalised canal infer structure from the cities they pass through,or even include it as negative value on the visitor contribution ? to the canals funding.ditto the fly tipping and polution as these expenses should be shown as a cost to the public purse not the boating one.
