    Wi-Fi

Many people on here use the Huawei B535 router: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Unlocked-B535-333-Soyealink-External-Antennas/dp/B09J94GLN3/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3GA3VN5B7CKQK&keywords=b535&qid=1698391666&sprefix=b535%2Caps%2C194&sr=8-4 and an unlimited data sim from Smarty, which has a 28 day rolling contract (you only pay for the months that you actually will be using it). Many people use a Poynting aerial, but I've found that the router is particularly sensitive and the external aerial makes little or no difference.
  4. I use a pneumatic switch like Alan d’E suggests, but I’ve found it needs a 12v relay in the circuit, or the contacts don’t last long on 12volts.

  6. Hi We've just done the Leicester ring, from North Kilworth Marina!, but went anti-clockwise, the thinking being to get the hardest part over first! ie Leicester itself, with big heavy locks and some unsavoury areas. We went from Kilby Bridge to Birstall in a day, but with hindsight we could have stopped over in Leicester at either Castle Gardens or the newer moorings at Friars Mill, and set off early next day to avoid the lowlife at Limekiln. Other than that it is a great trip, especially on the Soar, and we really enjoyed it- you will too especially if you have time to take it easy. Cheers
  7. Aye, just come past us near Barby. First thought, apart from the different steering experience, was that it is an excellent use of narrowboat limited space.

  9. From today's Boater's Update: "And for those who’ve seen online chatter about the moorings in Llangollen Basin, we are currently reviewing a range of options for the moorings at Llangollen, to improve them for visiting boaters and better reflect increasing costs. More information will be released in the next couple of weeks, and we’d welcome the views of boaters and other users."
  10. In the picture of the alternator pulley, the belt looks really slack to me....
  11. In MTB's photo with the red arrow, the blue stuff below the arrow tip looks like some sort of repair paste, which has also got onto the adjacent silver pipe? Maybe it's a known fault with a bodge applied?
  12. My boat engine is a Sole diesel. I got sick of paying the manufacturer price for air filters, almost as big a markup as Vetus. For the past 15 years or so, I have used a stainless-steel pan scourer stuffed into the air filter holder. Making sure it's the type that doesn't shred, and none of it can get past the inlet hole. Engine now done 6000 hrs, no ill effects. I change the filter/scourer as per service schedule, dam sight cheaper than OEM.

  14. If you’re going to replace the switch, you might as well try squirting some contact cleaner (Servisol) down the keyhole.
  15. Twice my license has been emailed whilst out cruising. Each time I called in the nearest boatyard and they happily printed them out for me. One charged me a pound, the other did it for nowt.
  16. You Alien fiend! What have you done with the real LadyG??!!
  17. Not as stupid as my idea to use the Paloma for central heating 😬
  18. Opposite opinion: we visited the secret bunker a few years back - all four of us agreed it was very good. Don't know if it's been altered since then, but we plan to go again next time we chug that way.
  19. My boat has a dump-through toilet and a (plastic) holding tank as per the OP. We've found that Odorlos, which used to be very effective, is now useless. I suspect the formulation was changed a few years back. We now use bio washing liquid, or nothing. After a thorough clean (jet-washer down the hole, with old towel to prevent splashback 🤢), we've had no issues with smells. Don't listen to the cassette brigade, your toilet is simple and easy to deal with.
  20. Hi robtheplod I bought 4x135Ah Probat batteries from a different eBay seller in February 2019. They are still giving good service, with no noticeable degradation. I don't mollycoddle the batteries, apart from not letting them go below 50% SOC (according to my SmartGauge). They are charged from 500w solar, and a single 70amp alternator. They run a 240v full size fridge via a 1500W inverter, and an Eberspacher; they are the main loads. I fully expected them to need replacing by now, but so far so good.

    Solar output

My domestic solar panels were installed in Feb 2012. The output over their lifetime to date is 35952 KWh, so thats about 3720 KWh per annum. (West Yorkshire, grid tied 3.6 KW inverter, 4.0 KW of panels) HTH
  22. Spotted today by bridge 36 on the Ashby. Why would anybody do this?
