  1. Hi guys, Need a bit of help/info. I've recently sold my boat to a couple - cash. They chose not to have a survey of any sort and when the boat left our moorings it was fine - no problems whatsoever. They have reported a few small probs, and one big problem which we never had in the 5 years we owned the boat. How do I stand, legally if it's taken further? I'm not putting too much info on here, for the obvious reason. I can disclose more info in PM if you'd like to help! Thanks in advance
  2. There's plenty of people who don't have a bow/stern thruster and they manage fine. Sorry if I've offended anybody. http://www.cruisingschool.co.uk/home/cours...mans_course.htm
  3. I spend most of my time on the Bridgewater, so, unfortunately, this doesn't apply to me. I wish MSCCo. had something like this in place. Oh well, you can wish can't you!
  4. "Your" ... I'm sure you mean "Our" ??
  5. I've been to Wheaton Aston a few times, but not to the music festival. Is it every year? Let us know how it is - I may check it out.
  6. That wasn't aimed at you, Tony. I meant in general. You almost sound as if you're trying to hide something
  7. People think that because they're only going 2mph they're not causing a problem. Okay, they're not "speeding" but you have to think about how much water you're boat is pushing. If you're in a cruiser you could probably pass other moored boats at 4mph, but if you're going past with a narrowboat/wide beam which swims like a goldfish belly up, it's time to knock the throttle off a little.

  10. Good luck with the cruise.. and.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
  11. I agree with John, As long as it isn't tidal of course, such as the ribble link.
  12. What's the preferred way of going round the Four Counties ? I've done it twice now and on both occasions I've gone clockwise.
  13. David, I do understand and agree. you can't hold the boat AND wind the paddles, so if there's no way to hold the boat back, what do you do? I've normally either collared a passer by, or let some water in and then walk back to hold the boat. This takes considerably longer but, in my opinion safer. I'm in no rush whilst on the cut. I remember somebody who works for BW is a member on these forums, maybe we could get some info from Eugene? (I think that's his name). Edit > Maybe start an alternative post with a list of locks with either dodgy handrails or lack of bollards etc?
  14. I think it's very bad practice to use the handrails of the ladder on locks to check your boat as I've lost count of the amount of times I've nearly had an accident whilst trying to climb them. One one lock the ladder was that loose I couldn't climb up to work the lock. The ladder on the other side having dissapeared for some reason, probably the same one. I had to sit it out and wait in the lock until someone could shut the gate for me and start the lock filling so I could get up onto the bank and finish working it. On another occasion (after waiting for ages) I had to back the boat out of the lock so I could get off onto the bank and then pull the boat in using a rope. It's okay when there's a few of you and the helmsman doesn't have to get off the boat but for the ones that go it alone like me, it's a right pain in the stern.

  16. Ahh, yes! I remember this knot - takes me a back a few years I was told how to tie this knot by a very experienced boater, when I crewed on a leeds liverpool longboat. Like David, he never gave it a name but I'm sure I can remember it being referred to as a Lightermans Hitch once upon a time.

  19. I'm not entirely sure which knot you're referring to, but I have seen the "Tugmans Hitch" mentioned quite a lot in different places.
  20. All cowboys from the wild west (and not the ones that rip you off) are now boaters.
  21. Coming back off the GU, heading up north, I set off from Atherstone on a Wednesday and was back in Anderton by Saturday night - so it could of been done, but you've got your boat back now....
  22. Ahhh, that's where it is - I passed it a few weeks ago but couldn't remember exactly where. I suppose you'll be out this weekend messing about on yer boat, I certainly will I should of remembered due to the fact that I'm reading the book "Anderton for Orders" and Baddesley where their first load was.
