  1. Would you mind sharing how you sorted it? When people come to the forum and search to see whether someone else has already asked their question, it's quite nice to find the full resolution.
  2. Are you sure a 55 inch screen is what you want? If you're sat too close it'll be worse than a smaller screen. It's all doable though if you've got enough money to spend on batteries and charging systems (and the habits/will/money to run and maintain those systems). I think The Floating Workshop can probably sort you out, and if you're in the right area you might even get them coming to you with their beautiful pair of boats. Contact details here or you can find them on Facebook too: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/directory/51207-the-floating-workshop
  3. Interesting to know, thanks 👍 Yes, I think the original post was based on the misconception that steel boats are all the same, as are GRP boats; and although a majority of each follow a pattern, if one can take the time to look around, there are many varieties of each out there. We could even say that there's a greater variety of steel boats available to suit all needs.
  4. Surely so can steel if it's maintained very well. I thought GRP can suffer 'osmosis' which weakens it?
  5. I've seen a few steel narrowboats with a seat and wheel-steering, including a couple with centre cockpit. If you can afford to, I'm sure it's possible to have a narrowboat converted to wheel steering as an option. That way you might get the best of both worlds.
  6. Surely this description takes the biscuit: Can they be done for being genuinely misleading?
  7. When we've been frozen in before and a boat is cruising past through the ice, I've at least stuck my face to the window if not opened the duck hatch to poke my head out. There's just something really fun about watching a boat ice-breaking and I love the tinkling sounds! The heavy thuds on the hull can sound alarming, but I usually enjoy them in much the same way as I do listening to thunder.
  8. Here's the Rightmove advert: 2 bedroom house boat for sale in The Mothership, NW1 (rightmove.co.uk) Given the location and transferrable private mooring (albeit with mooring fees of £12,990 per year), the price tag isn't particularly surprising. This is more a reflection of what a well-presented, novel and interesting property can fetch in central London; near Primrose Hill, in Camden Town, on the edge of Regent's Park... it's a highly desirable (and costly) location.
  9. The TIMEA engineer group on Facebook has a list of engineers, most of which will work in London, and they have good reputations. To get recommendations for specific engineers or advice though, you really do need help by sharing the make/model/type of boiler and engine, and the symptoms of the problem/s. It's possible (but not guaranteed) that the issues could be diagnosed and rectified without another expensive engineer
  10. Thanks 👍 courtesy of @Peugeot 106 we've been in touch with Stuart, have his guidance doc and intend to have him on board.
  11. Just remember to take them off the canal-side of the boat. They're blooming awful to cruise past in the dark.
  12. Thanks both. That old thread pointed me in the right direction to find this guidance from Peel Ports https://www.peelports.com/media/qrunkad0/safety-guidance-for-small-boat-passage-of-the-river-mersey.pdf https://www.peelports.com/media/ea5hnakk/mli01-pleasure-craft-induction-pack-2024.pdf which does a decent job of making it sound scary enough to take the crossing seriously. Sounds like we need to invest in a radar reflector too (otherwise I think we have the required kit at least). Time to look for a pilot then 👍
  13. We're thinking about making this crossing in a few months time in our 62ft narrowboat. Does anyone know of a nice to-do list/ guidance document for this trip? I think we were a bit spoiled by how easy it was to get information when we did the tidal Thames (particularly thanks to SPCC). Ideally we'd be doing this without a pilot if that's feasible (for a start, I've already got the VHF and license for it).
  14. Who told you about the required changes/additions? I would ask them, (if they know what they're talking about) they should be able to give you a good answer.
  15. Unless I'm mistaken, if the government is already intending to designate one new National Park, that would suggest they are already willing to provide extra funding to said new NP, wherever it might be. It's just a case of choosing where that NP will be and who/what/where will benefit from the associated funding. (I don't think the canal network is a likely candidate anyway - for one the administration of changes over such a scattered "area" would be a nightmare I expect - NP's are usually large discrete areas that make for a nice clear blob on a map.)
  16. This is mine, I believe it to be the King of Sack Barrows! Chunkier than other folding sack barrows, but Oh those tires are so much better on rough/muddy towpaths. We use it for big grocery collections, big laundry trips, cassettes x3, stove fuel (normally heat logs), a canoe etc. It's great. Only problem was a bus driver once refused my wife entry to the bus as he accused her of lying when she said she was using it for shopping! (OK strictly speaking I attached it to one end of the canoe to give it wheels, it did make the portage much easier though!)
  17. Regarding the second - this is probably my ignorance, but is a boat built in 1981 really "historic" with significant "heritage value"?
  18. By that definition, surely one could put money, effort, time etc. into maintaining the condition of an asset.

Actually the more I think on it, the more I'm coming to your side. If we'd stayed in London for 1.5 years on the boat I think we might have abandoned life, let alone the boat!
  20. Is there an article linked to this headline?

We spent all day locked in following multiple vlogs before we bought our boat during lockdown, December 2020. We were even Continuous Moorers for a few months (not enthusiastically, it was the final Covid lockdown ). We're still loving life aboard though, so I don't think that's a very fair generalisation. Though we did use the boat as a means to escape London rather than to remain there... maybe that's the key.
  22. Thanks 👍 it's quite far down the priority list but I might have a poke around at some point. It's a gradual-ish reduction in power over a couple of seconds and it can be extended with the engine revved up in neutral, so it feels like a battery issue.
  23. My bowthruster battery conks out after about 6 seconds I think. That's been the case for 3 years though it only gets occasional use.I wouldnt really want to use the thruster much more than that anyway, and at least it's preventing the thruster from dying due to overuse. Is a maximum 15 seconds of thruster power really problematic/indicative of a struggling battery?
