  1. I think TheBiscuits has nailed it - thank you so much. Here's another picture of it, surely the same.
  2. You were all so brilliant at spotting the Boulters Lock picture that I'm going to ask if you know another one among my grandfather's photographs (and I promise this is the last!). All I know is that it's in Scotland. Is it the Caledonian Canal, I wonder? I just don't know. But I'm sure you guys will! Date is around the same time as the last one - but perhaps a bit earlier, say 1908. Thanks in advance, David
  3. Thanks Mark, and everyone else. I think we can say conclusively that this is Boulters Lock. A similar view was taken during the enlargement of the lock (see below; this photo is dated April 1912) you can see exactly the same bush on the right, but without the hotel sign, and the building is identical (compare the stone string course at first floor level, and open windows). And it's still clearly visible in Loddon's streetview picture above. The date of the the Getty images photo also means that my grandfather's picture must have been taken before the enlargement, perhaps some time 1910-1911. So, case closed, and thanks to you all. Best wishes, David
  4. Thank you all so much for your replies. Like John, Tony and Derek I am inclined to think it is Boulters - especially as the sign can be interpreted as Boulters Private Hotel. The camera angle suggests that the photo was taken from a bridge, which also fits. There are pictures of it in 1914 that show just how popular it was.
  5. I'm trying to identify the location of some photographs taken by my grandfather around 1912. There's one of an outing on a canal boat, with a private hotel in the background (I can just read that on the sign, but can't read its name. Perhaps Porters, or Carters). Does anyone know this lock? He lived in Ealing, so it's possible that it was on the Grand Union Canal, but that's just a guess. Any help would be much appreciated.
