  1. Hi Robbo. Just asked hubby and he said white smoke was coming from the unit 'inside' and no, not from the exhaust. There was no roaring from the burner like you usually hear when it is working!! Weird. Maybe as you say, not been used for a while (which it hasnt) which is why now its not working.
  2. As the weather has turned rather chilly in the evening, decided to turn on the C/H for a while, but not working!! Called hubby to investigate and although we could hear the units usual noise, nothing was happening. On closer inspection 'white smoke' was coming from the unit itself, so decided to turn everything off and leave alone. Anyone know anything about these units on this forum, or is there anyone we can call on for help/service etc in the Fradley area? We dont use the C/H much, but its nice to know it works if needed. So any help much appreciated.
  3. Actually the invoice says £41.00 !!! Cheap as chips eh As in marina at mo and on lecky old one still in situ so until it gets dragged out I cant see what make it was as the label is not visible to check.
  4. Thanks peeps as usual most helpful.... Think batteries have certainly gone up in price since 2004 when I got the last starter battery... almost doubled in price. Still if the new one lasts as long... I cant grumble
  5. Hi guys and gals. My starter battery has died Still bound to have happened at some point.. Now, where to buy is my question... I know batteries have soared in price (lead) but any pointers much appreciated... the one that's dead was a 644.. whatever that means (got that off the old receipt dated 2004! )
  6. Of course.. no probs. In fact the amount of money wasted from bad investments to bollards in all shapes and sizes that none of us needed in 'single locks' a statue could be made from Bronze and coated in GOLD LEAF.
  7. Mirror that statement 'Doorman' Colourful indeed, with a HUGE personality to match... But all best wishes to the 'new owners' and like you will look forward to meeting you at some point
  8. Nice one Bimbly1 - But then I couldnt 'curtain twitch'
  9. Thanks for the replies... and David can you send me a pic of the wooden type of doors you do please and also approx prices as a guide, tks in advance.
  10. Ummm... Can see where you going with steel doors these days, but wood doors look so much nicer To be honest if anyone wanted to get into a boat today, they would one way or another.. but got to get past the dogs first
  11. Think this year will have to get new bow doors - Any recs on who to approach for a good job? Also what is the best wood to go for, dont fancy Oak as this can show black marks over time! With the amount of boatbuilders and yards disappearing at an alarming rate... where to go these days, who to trust for a professional job, these are all questions us boaters ask these days. So any input would be as always much appreciated.
  12. Just about sums it up then Brian.... 'they arent going to do anything' sounds like their kind of response. I expect as said before more of this will happen around the system causing problems for us boaters. Still why should they care when come April we will have volunteers looking after us.... yeah right, cant wait !!!!!!
  13. Ere we go then Brian.... lack of maintenance beginning to show... expect more of this eh? By way... Happy new year to you and your other 'alf' hope to meet you if up your end lol...
  14. Koukouvagia thats exactly the stuff... You guys and gals on here always come up trumps :-)
  15. Hi. Can anyone on the forum help with accessing 'sealant tape' for the weed hatch? I was able to obtain this in the past, think last time up on the Bridgewater canal. Not sure if it is called sealant tape or is there another name for it? Its just the peel and stick type. Can anyone tell me where I can get some from, as need to re-do the plate, thanks
  16. Can anyone on here throw some light on the framed picture of a 'toddler' along with what was roses, place by the Gate (which opens onto a very busy road) at Shutt Hill Lock on the S&W? When we passed through this lock, towards the end of July we first saw the picture (nothing on the picture, name etc) and the roses then looked recently placed - and felt very sad at the sweet little girls face, holding a soft fluffy toy. We then wondered what had happened to her, we thought if it had been a boating incident the photo would have been placed on the opposite side of the lock ie. not the road side! Today we have passed through that said lock again, and now there is a 'little wooden cross' placed by her photo the roses have died.. and all that is written on the cross is 'Rest in peace'... so anyone on here know what may have happened to her? I know from looking at that very busy road cars dash along it at speed..... just makes me wonder.. and think... what a terrible shame for the loss of a beautiful child.
  17. Hi to all. Any recs on dry-docking for hull blacking on the Shroppy heading down towards aldersley Jnc and S&W area? Need to stay on boat whilst the work is carried out too (dont think some will allow owing to H&S)! Also, any ideas of prices based on 57' would be helpful too. Tks in advance
  18. I have pm'd Funky asking the same question Nick. Hopefuly he will get back, as would really like to source one of these. Many tks to all who have replied so far. It is a minefield for us boaters to make the right choice on these things to try and save battery power. Not sure the Led ones are any better, probably are a bit lower consumption.. but also more expensive :-(
  19. Been looking at replacement combi tv.. but although they all seem to have the same gubbins in them ie freeview, dvd, usb etc they advertise them as being 'low energy' consumption but when you check out the actual wattage some are quite high! There are lots out there ranging from say 19" to 22" screen size but for a good price the 240v ones seem cheaper, but on one from Tesco the wattage was 70w! Looking at the 12/230/240 sets of the same calibre the watts are a lot lower but the price doubles. So even though we have an inverter the power is still going to be sucked out of the batteries... so would you say that 70w is HIGH for watching a couple hours evening tv? Or are we better off to go with the multi voltage sets as less likely to drain the batteries.
  20. Many tks to all who replied back so quickly.. and yes it is a great site for many things and answers. This must be the lady as it seems she is well known.. I was told about her from another boater who was very pleased with the work she did for them, but I forgot to make a note of her name and contact details at the time.. so thanks again Quebec for the mob no as well.
  21. Good morning. Anyone heard of this lady (think her name is Sarah).. who is a marine electrical engineer?
  22. Well certainly a lot of debate over this thread I originally posted. Also agree very sad for a death of a child.. but that bridge has been there for perhaps 200 years and there is another plank bridge exactly the same on the S&W Botterham staircase locks, is this one also a danger too? Surely when the old number one's used these locks perhaps their children who often assisted their parents crossed these bridges to work the locks.. but had been 'canal educated' of the leathal dangers? How can you bring a 200 year old system into the 21st century by adapting locks with fences etc to make it safe for today's society without ruining historically built structures?
  23. Just read the article on Narrowboatworld site about the Stourport staircase locks tragedy a week or so ago and the erection of scaffold poles to stop us boaters from using that 'plank' foot-bridge and also us crossing the lock gates!!!!! How mad is this??? So we have to go the LONG and very dangerous way round the lock for access now. What if we need to get to the paddle mechanisms in hurry??? I can understand the concerns regarding what happened at the staircase with that cyclist falling in and drowning, but this action to stop it happening again is surely madness. What is going to happen with all the other locks on the system where a similar plank bridge assembly is in place, and has been there for hundred of years?? Fence them all off so we do not have any access at all anymore??? Is this structure at Stourport staircase locks only temporary until investigations are complete, or PERMANENT? I can remember over the years there was always a BW lock-keeper there keeping any eye on things letting boats flow either up or down the flights.. But only last year in the height of summer I looked all around and NO official was around at all!!! So if there had been this last tragic accident possibly wouldnt have happened.
  24. We got our 135amp/hrs from the net using 'Tanya' uk site (Wales) last May and they cost £100 each instead of 140 squids elsewhere we tried.. ok we had to pay for delivery but they are a good company.. so have a look on line and see what they have on offer.
