You need:
- something to brew in
- something to keep nasties out
- some way of making it all sterile
- something to store your brew in
- something to transfer it all around
The something to brew in: go to the supermarket and get a 5l bottle of water. The plastic bottle will work.
Something to keep the nasties out: an airlock. Really unless you want to faff about with homemade contraptions, you'll probably want to buy one.
Something to make it all sterile: there are ways you can do that with watered down bleach and lots of rinsing but, seeing as you're buying an airlock anyway why not buy some specialist brewing steriliser
Something to store the brew in: really best done in bulk, but your plastic bottle is not advisable for long term storage imo. So we're talking wine bottles. You'll need 6 for a 5 litre brew. You could buy them empty, but why not buy 6 bottles of wine and "empty" then over a few nights?
Something to transfer it: you'll need some tubing to siphon it off. If you're placing an order with a homebrew supplies store, you can get some piping there. There's also a contraption you can get for trying to keep the sediment out, usually for about £3 or £4.
Also worth saying we should respect Moley's wishes not to get dragged back into this forum... I'm also not sure how long I'll be here either. Boating is a vague distant interest of mine, but not one I've pursued before beyond a couple of holidays. I mostly came here to find Moley, which I've done but it's nice to see people interested in my hobby, so I started this thread on others requests. I might stick around, I might not, but I'm happy to answer any questions while I'm here
