  1. And the naysayers are also in lockdown I see... To be clear, these people all crank their engines over by hand, because to invent an electric start would be too ambitious, or too difficult, or too much laziness...
  2. I was thinking of small hydraulic cylinders mounted low - on the outside of each door - the flexible pipe linking the two doors could be under the door sill or even under the deck - the push/pull pipes reversed on each cylinder to compliment the doors opposite travel - pretty simple to imagine, but I've no experience with hydraulics so sizing etc. is a bit of a guess - although the force needed to open the doors is very small.
  3. As the title says - having to use two hands to open and close the companionway doors all the time is really annoying to the point of distraction...or invention. Is there any system that opens both doors if either one door is moved - I'm thinking of a small hydraulic system that links the doors, so that when one door is moved, that movement is transferred to the other door so that they operate on tandem. Could a hydraulic steering system be adapted? Any thoughts or ideas? Please no naysayers.
  4. I've heard the new 5G towers are all equipped with Bow thrusters too...so...
  5. Spot on comment - The other day I had to reverse down between a line of moored up boats on either bank after turning - It was Storm Bella or such - blowing around 30 knots...I managed not to bump a single boat...a lot of shouting at the "mate" in the bow... The bow thruster actually over-heated as we rafted up...scary few moments, but impossible to do without the bow thruster.
  6. I have been living on my wide beam 60 x 12.6 for around 8 months now, basic sail away new in Dec 2019 - I installed a 6.4 kW Multi fuel stove. Stanley Oisin. We have had snow and frosty mornings in Ireland - Our doors both front and rear are not exceptionally air tight, and all our vents are open fully. We get around 20 C with the stove fired up all day - this is very comfortable. I was against the multi-fuel and still am. My wife twisted my arm on this but is now more open to changing to a diesel burner like Refleks - I have my heart set on an Effel diesel heater with scope for radiators - this model is around 4.7 kW on the stove alone - another 8kW is available with the radiator coil and radiators - dependant on the number of radiators - I'm not too sure how the manufacturer determines this output, but I trust the information so far. I am also installing a diesel powered air heater - As Alan has mentioned, this is for "instant" heating on unexpectedly cold mornings in warmer seasons...

  8. I was under the impression that the decision to use either Butane or Propane is based on the expected lowest temperatures your bottled gas will encounter? Propane will still boil off - produce gas - in sub-Zero temps to -42C whereas Butane will only go as low as -0.4C - So, if you're storing gas in bottles outside, and you're expecting really cold temps, it would be better to run propane?
  9. The article mentions an oily residue found in the gas lines of remote regulator setups - perhaps this has caused your 90 deg turn isolator to go spongy and stiff? I know they have a nylon type plastic seal, which could be affected?

  16. Have you mounted any guns on your foredeck yet? You never know where these "furrin" fishermen may be found...could be some on your cut?

  18. Ah those will be the internal combustion type then...Things might have to slow down a bit more if they move us to solar power - like cruise for a day - moor up for 3 days to recharge...and no cruising in winter. I could live like that.
  19. I'd imagine most boats are moored up for winter?
  20. I think fudd is doing 1000A/h at 48V - so 4 gallons of diesel then? How many hours cruising can you do on 4 gallons?
  21. A thousand Amp hours is a shed load of power? Are you sure you need that much? What is the voltage going to be on this system please? I am also thinking about an electric barge...my next boat.
  22. Locking bar made to hold down the engine covers - keep the bits safe.

  24. Ah, true experience is when you make a balls-up and then realise, "Hang on, I've made that balls-up before?"
