  1. Thank you all for your help and comments. It seems as though as long as we look after it there should be no further corrosion so I think we will be going through with the purchase.
  2. I assume the epoxy underneath will still give it extra protection?
  3. Thank you all for your swift replies! I should've said yes the hull was shot blasted and both the hull and baseplate was blacked with 2pack epoxy 3 years ago. Then end of last year both hull and baseplate were blacked again with International intertuf. There is no galvanic isolator so you could well be right on the corrosion. Should I get one fitted, even though we will be continuously cruising?
  4. Hey all, We've lived on a narrowboat for 4 years now and just in the midst of purchasing a 57x10ft widebeam, constructed in 2008. We had a survey done, and was surprised to find some pitting of 2.8mm on the baseplate. The hull thickness measurements were: Base plate: 9.7mm to 10.mm Side plates: 5.6mm to 6mm with pitting of 1.0mm Uxter Plates: 9.7mm to 9.9mm The boat was previously shot blasted 3 years ago, and blacked earlier this year, so the surveyor made it clear that due to the shot blasting it wasn't a pretty sight, but was a very honest baseplate. He said if all boats were shot blasted prior to surveying they'd likely find the same kind of pitting. He also said as long as we look after her, take her out of the water every few years and check and touch-up any blacking, she should be fine for another 10 years with no further damage. Does anyone have any advice on whether or not this is sound? I'm concerned that when it comes to selling her on ourselves in say 5 years time, the next purchaser will be as worried as I am! Or am I just worrying too much? Photo below!
  5. Ah I hadn't thought of checking the insulation that way, thanks! Will do. Though I don't think this is from a vent leak. The one in the room with the brown stains on the wall used to leak but we sorted it and now hasn't visibly dripped in a long time. In that room we get water dripping from under the window a lot, but these brown stains are now appearing on the adjacent internal wall, as pictured.
  6. Thanks for your reply! I have to confess I just don't know what type of insulation we have... It was built in 2002. It doesn't say anything on the survey of what kind of insulation it is. Thanks Alan. It is steel-topped.
  7. Hey all, We've had our boat since April and are full time liveaboards and continuous cruisers. We've had a fair amount of issues with condensation which we've tried very hard to battle, which wasn't unexpected really. But we've noticed in the last few weeks more internal leaks than ever before, either from under the gunnels (always near or under windows) or from the ceiling. Sometimes it is clear water but now we are noticing brown leaks as well. This is usually from the ceiling but now I've just noticed it dripping down an internal wall as well (pictured) and feel a bit concerned! Does it sound as though it's all condensation related? Is it rust? And should I be worried? Any help greatly appreciated
