  1. Did you got to the Grammar School as its not far from the GC station? Incidentally it is now part of the Loghborough Schools Foundation along withe the High, Fairfield. Amhurst ( formerly the Convent) and a nursery.
  2. You should look at Tony Brooks web site it has loads of useful info on it www.TB-Training.co.uk
  3. Unfortunately I cannot get to the IWA AGM which is on Saturday because I would like to address some awkward questions to the trustees. I think that they are a load of boring old farts who only care for self grandisement not the good of the organisation and what it stands for!! I won't cancel my membership as this would remove my right to have a say.
  4. What type of stern has your boat? If its a cruiser or semi-trad could simply be rainwater getting in. Otherwise it could be coolant with a thin layer of oil. So firtsly check your oil level with the dipstick, secondly check the coolant levels.
  5. Another person who may be able to help you is James Terminutter Packer he is based in Coalville phone no.07845277058 Its worth calling him for a chat. He appears to be a very knowledgeable chap. I think you need some professional help before you make too many changes to your engine trying to solve the problem from advice given on the internet. You are getting the advice from some very good people but there is nothing like face to face contact and help.
  6. As you are in the Leicester area I suggest that you get David Sawbridge from Sileby Mill Boatyard out to have a look at your problem. He is very knowledgeable on boats and engines. It will cost you but in the long run it will be money well spent. ontact no is 01509813583 The other Lister specialist is Richard Powell of Primrose Engineering he is based near Kenilworth and what he doesn't know about Listers is not worth knowing. I have hand started Listers for fun and its bloody hard work.
  7. This is the content of the email I received this morning Sarah Niblock has resigned her position as Chief Executive of the Inland Waterways Association. IWA is extremely fortunate to have the interim support of some highly experienced volunteers who, along with an enthusiastic Trustee team, will cover the position in the short term. IWA National Chair, Les Etheridge, said “IWA would like to thank Sarah for the very positive contribution she has made during her employment. This will ensure that the very important work to Protect Our Waterways, and our leading role in the Fund Britain's Waterways campaign, will continue to progress without pause. Nearly 90 organisations have now united to lobby and persuade national and local government that the benefits provided to the public by our canals and navigable rivers must be maintained without erosion through lack of investment. Many millions of people rely upon and value our inland waterways, and we must ensure they are protected.” Sarah Niblock said "It has been a pleasure working with the IWA staff and volunteers, I am appreciative of their professionalism and delighted to have helped to bring about the media impact and strategic input which will serve IWA well in delivering its future campaigns. It became very clear to me that the scale of the challenge facing IWA along with so many other charities is significant in these times. I sincerely wish IWA every success for the next 77 years and beyond.” To contact the team please email: ceo@waterways.org.uk. Kindest Regards, Les Etheridge, Sue O’Hare & Nick Dybeck Leadership Team I have lost my confidence in the trustees of the organisation, it seems to have completely lost its way. I would like to know why the CEO has resigned.
  8. Why not cruise upstream for a few days whilst you get to know the boat and how it handles. Suggest Nottingham to Shardlow and then divert up the Soar toLoughborough its about 4 days cruising. It willalso allow you to find out about any faults on the boat before you venture on the tidal Trent. You will need life jackets for all on board and an anchor with chain and warp. It would also be a good idea to have a full engine service and have the bottom of the diesel tank sucked out to remove any accumulated water that is in it. Water does get into tanks from condensation and it needs removing annually. A full tank is a good idea when you start out. A blog to read is https://oleanna.co.uk/ They are experienced boaters and are currently going down the Trent to Keadby
  9. Hawford Lock House on the river Severn/Droitwich Barge canal https://www.fineandcountry.co.uk/droitwich-spa-estate-agents/property-sale/3-bedroom-detached-house-for-sale-in-worcester-worcestershire-wr3-7sd-claines-hawford-lock-lane/3025371 Yours for just £1m I hope that it doesn't flood.
  10. Living in Loughborough and having organised the last banters in the town we are interested in this one. The Swan in the Rushes is the obvious pub as its just across the road from the hotel and the canal. There is also a spoons which we could take over part of. For those who don't know the town it has an intersting centre with a market and good charities shops plus the Great Central Railway for gricers (railway fans). Plenty of good beer. There is a good small brewery in town - Charnwood their Vixen is well worth drinking and it reminds me of a certain forumite who shall remain nameless!!
  11. Somerton Lock cottage on the Oxford. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/135718526?fbclid=IwAR1-CGf6ORVI-Zau9pM7S4AUmr7ZGkh1LXOBRkzak3ICEwiZrZ9nA6N5xOY#/?channel=RES_BUY
  12. Tracey and Howard are now operating Hampstead on the Soar, Trent to Nottingham and T&M to Shardlow https://www.facebook.com/groups/3143767002610491
  13. If you are heading down the Soar to get to Uxbridge there is now a fuel boat operating on the river. https://www.facebook.com/groups/3143767002610491 Phone number is 07526106818 It is Hampstead operated by Tracey and Howard. He is also an excellent boat electrician. Otherwise Sileby Mill Boatyard have a good turnover of fuel and also have a good chandelry. There is then nowhere until you get to Debdale.
  14. Ospreys tear fish apart to eat them. But they usually do so it trees or on their nests. As far as I'm aware there no breeding ospreys in the area.
  15. That fence is no real deterent to a thief. I can get through it in a minute or so with the right bit of kit. It would be more secure with a third rail. Why people put steel pallisade fencing up is beyond my comprehension it can only give a false sence of security. Fine welded steel mesh is much more secure and more pleasing aesthetically but that only needs a battery powered angle grinder to get through it.
  16. How about this one with about 45ft of frontage to the river Soar at Barrow on Soar. The tasteless bungalow is well above the river level so won't flood. https://www.rezide.group/property/the-pastures-barrow-upon-soar-loughborough-2/
  17. This is what I got from Jane Hunt our local MP. It is very similar to the response that Hudds Lad got. Dear Mr Thorpe, Thank you for your email about canals. As you know, canals form an important part of the Government’s work in reintroducing biodiversity in nature. In addition to, as you have mentioned, their history and industrial heritage, there are significant health and wellbeing benefits to walking along a canal. I understand that around 800 million visits are made to our canals every year, which demonstrates their importance in the UK. The Canal & River Trust is responsible for 2,000 miles of waterways and associated historic industrial infrastructure in England and Wales. It is responsible for maintaining the navigability and safety of its waterways including reservoirs, embankments and other infrastructure. The Government recognises that the organisation has an important role to play in contributing to the Environmental Improvement Plan. For example, the Government is developing policies to adapt to climate change across the country and I am aware that navigation authorities are exploring ways to adapt the network, such as through installing electric charging points in rivers and canals, which have helped encourage boaters to switch to electric vessels. That said, while I note your concern about funding, you may find it helpful to know that, while there is no obligation on Ministers to fund the Canal & River Trust beyond 2027, I am aware that, subject to certain conditions being met, the Government will offer a new long-term funding package of over £400 million. To date, the Canal & River Trust has been supported with £550 million funding from the Government. With this further commitment, the charity will be supported with a further £590 million until 2037. Since it was first created in 2012 as a private charity independent of the Government, Ministers have been clear that the Canal & River Trust should become progressively more self-sufficient financially. I understand that a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Canal & River Trust signed in June 2012 included the objective to “reduce dependence on Government Grant and to foster increasing self-sufficiency, by providing access to new charitable income streams and stimulating new efficiencies”. The long-term £400 million funding deal for 2027 to 2037 continues that objective. Finally, I understand that Defra has been discussing this with the charity for some time and has been offering support on how it can increase income from other sources, alongside continued funding from the Government. I hope this information is useful and, if I can be of any further assistance, please do let me know. Best wishes, Jane
  18. More that are missing, Sileby Mill Boatyard - this is a separate concern to Sileby Marine Kegworth Marine Private moorings by the Otter pub at Kegworth Private moorings on the river loop by Kegworth shallow lock. There are towpath moorings at Shardlow above the lock - the extend for about 1/2mile and are private. Can't remember what they are called. CRT moorings above Weston on Trent (the one near Shardlow) Derby Canal moorings at Swarkestone Junction CRT moorings at Willington - both sides of the bridge CRT moorings at Eggington bridge by the A38 Private moorings to the east of the Dove aqueduct Horninglow basin at Burton Private moorings offside above Alrewas lock CRT moorings in three places at Fradley Moorings at Fradley owned by the caravan park CRT moorings offside below Beeston lock Hope that this fills a few gaps
  19. Saw it there the other day and wondered what you were planning to do with it? Looks like the top would be easy to remove.
  20. That boat lookslike a money pit with no bottom. IF it were a house or building it would have a negative value!! You could not hope to ever recoup the amount of money that it needs spending on it.
  21. Given the lock restrictions at Marple and Bosley the Cheshire ring is not a sensible solution for this year.
  22. 4 counties ring with a diversion up the Caldon for a couple of days, ABC are a bit off the ring at Anderton. You could try Napton Narrowboats at Autherley junction or Andersen at Middlewich both have excellent boats.
  23. Matty, I've lost track of your email address. Can you let me have it please . Thanks Richard

  24. Simply take a section of hardwood say 50x38mm and as long as the table width. Saw it into two parts with a 60deg angle. Screw one part to the boat wall and the other to the underside of the table. The two pieces will lock together and be stable. To remove the table top simply lift off. Its technical name is a split batten fixing. Often used for pipe boxings that require ocassionally being removed with no visible fixings.
