  1. Just a way of highlighting that cultural norms when you and I were at school and growing up have moved on since then. If this forum is to be a welcoming place to boaters with different ages and backgrounds, it needs to be well distanced from certain 60s, 70s,80s schoolboy humour. I know, I was one once.
  2. If it's only minor leaks and no obvious gaps it may be worth trying Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure. Google it and you will find it. Sorted my leak around a porthole.
  3. Perhaps there's a compromise somewhere between the original price and £35k. There's an overpriced house on our street that's been on the market for months and the sellers don't seem prepared to budge. A lot depends on the sellers attitude and financial situation. If still interested and liking the boat it could be worth a speculative offer from the OP that includes the cost of fixing things. You don't know until you ask.
  4. If it's 2-8 year olds dropping rubbish it's down to their parents to stop them or deal with it.
  5. Tony knows his stuff in real life and is generous in his help. He isn't just sat behind his keyboard. He has years of practical experience, wrote the rcr engine and electrics courses and accompanying notes, and is also humble enough to acknowledge where other people know more about certain engines or topics than he does. The only mistake he seems to have made is mentioning your original engine diagnosis didn't make sense to him and to check it out, otherwise it could be an expensive and unnecessary red herring, which for some reason wasn't what you wanted to hear. Not sure why that would be, unless you want to waste time and money needlessly.
  6. Fernando looks capable of anything. I think @LadyG may be in need of a rescue home soon.
  7. For short people (5ft) some lock mechanisms are raised too high for an easy safe full rotation. The ratchet mechanism might not be easier in general use but avoids the need to overstretch in those situations.
  8. Also all moths that get too close.
  9. I don't know about moth lamps but would a lower wattage (led?) bulb do the same job? It's still light? And all light attracts insects at night, I know that from camping.
  10. I posted about a month ago (which nobody seemed to see or at least comment on) linking an article about a restraining order which meant keeping away from C&RT staff. I wondered at the time if that meant as long as he remained on his "boat" staff wouldn't be able to approach him. Obviously, most people would usually have to leave their boat at some point, but who knows. January Post Apologies if this has already been posted. https://www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk/news/23269734.bradford-avon-canal-boater-hit-restraining-order/ George Ward, 62, who lives on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Smelly Bridge near Bradford on Avon, was given the order on January 19. It followed action taken by the Crown Prosecution Service and the Canal & River Trust charity that looks after the UK’s canals and inland waterways network. The Canal & River Trust had accused him of using threatening and abusive behaviour towards two of its employees. More details in the full article. https://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/117364-bradford-on-avon-canal-boater-hit-with-restraining-order/&do=findComment&comment=2888012

    12v TV

Have you checked Google? Cello do 12v tvs with digital audio outputs. One example on Amazon with 3 hdmis and digital audio output. Cello C2420G 24” 240v / 12v Traveller Smart Android TV with Freeview Play, Google Assistant, Google Chromecast, 3 x HDMI and 2 x USB | Made in the UK 2022 model https://amzn.eu/d/3miMJ9Q I'm not sure if the digital audio output is the same as the optical audio output in the original question.
  12. The title of the book says it is "a personal account". That puts some perspective on the content quoted. Im not commenting on that content, just that it's a personal account.

  15. They interpet and implement the laws around charities and make decisions around what is and isn't a charity, and oversee how charities operate. Like other regulatory issues relating to CRT, any question about their charitable status isn't probably top of their inbox. Who's really bothered about what 30,000 boaters might think in the grand scheme of things.
  16. Sorry fot the shorthand re. Charities Commission, its been a busy day and I couldn't be bothered getting it right. Unless anything material has changed since they were registered, it would be an embarrassing climbdown to admit registration was wrong in the first place.
  17. I'm pretty sure the aa/aaa charger I used to use (uniross?) Had a mains charger and also a car cigarette lighter charger.
  18. C&RT is a charity because the charities commission have accepted they are. Their guidance on whether you are/need to be a charity goes along the following lines: if you think you might be a charity, you must apply to become one and then we will decide if you can/need to be one.
  19. I've done lots of very basic camping and our leisure boat is posh camping on water in a great outdoor environment. I also keep it simple, less to go wrong. Some people could, and would, embrace simple living full time, my wife would, but it's not what most people would cope with as a lifestyle.
  20. Our house stove isn't defra approved. The later model is and the only difference is the air vent stop as you mention. We burn smokeless ⁹anyway so not a problem currently. On the boat it's smokeless and kiln dried logs. No massive smoke after starting the fire. Liveaboard neighbours use salvaged logs which give off lots of smoke. I don't blame them and understand why they do it. We are in a rural area and there is nobody apart from a few other boaters to be bothered. It's different doing the same in an urban location.
  21. Regardless of what harm pm 2.5 particles might do, most people wouldn't complain if they don't see the smoke. Unseasoned self foraged wood might still be legal but it does leave a hell of a trace if used soon after harvesting, Smokeless fuel and seasoned logs less so. You can often tell the difference with what's burning when checking if someone is at home on their boat. Sometimes there's just a heat glimmer/distortion around their chimney, sometimes there's a pile of smelly smoke coming out .
  22. I recently had to pay in cash donations for the charity I work for. The automatic coin counter worked a treat and took a couple of minutes to handle 5 separate amounts amounting to approx £400. This then had to be banked with notes at the counter. In a major branch in a major town they had 4 operational counters. Each had people with issues that took a long time to sort out. My banking transaction took less than 2 minutes. I was queuing for approx 50 minutes to do it. With car parking costs and the time involved it was a pain for me. I can see how it would be a problem for someone running their own business.
