  1. May be of interest to someone here but I have just found a Gardner engine sign in a live auction finishing Sunday here: https://www.easyliveauction.com/catalogue/f064cfe03e3193c3ca9e3d4f2e83a99a/0af8d24542e81eb9357e7ef448a6646f/auction-of-vintage-reproduction-signs-jewellery-cigarette/?currentPage=2
  2. I have just returned from following up a sighting that we were given last night. I can confirm that the boat is now found and that we are satisfied as regards the safety of the steerer. I would like to thank very much everyone who responded to this request and took such an interest. Much appreciated, Wollix
  3. I can confirm that George has been in touch about this possible sighting. we have a couple of folk checking it out this afternoon who are also going to go up to hillmorton locks - be particularly interested in sightings from anyone north of there on the route above...
  4. on the subject of approaching the steerer, we simply dont know what is going on so would prefer to know location, and then approach ourselves but at the same time, he is a quiet and pleasant softly spoken person so no reason why not pass the time of day if you wish... thanks
  5. on the subject of route... while the route posted is what expected, what i expected has not happened so please would boaters who are 'off route' also keep an eye open too thanks wollix

  7. Michael Stimpson insures the boat and we are working on this together. I apologise about my profile, it is out of date I sold Benjamin Mark and own Christine Emma. To keep things simple about replies could you post the response to him at StimpsonM@aol.com. The bottom line is we dont know what has happened, do not wish to speculate in public, and are genuinely worried about the person on board... the first stage to this is finding the boat hence the request. Thank you for your time and interest - it is much appreciated.
  8. I own the boat, the steerer is a canal friend who offered to move it for me and who we are now unable to contact. BWB are aware. I will contact George. Thank you
  9. its not your area but they are very obliging and might well send them to you, I would reccommend NAPS at Northampton 01604 750 200 Wollix
  10. Anyone seen a blue 1992 54' cruiser stern narrowboat called Christine Emma (name not painted on side, but on licence) 54804 which should be on it's way from Fenny Compton to Stoke on Trent? Last thought to be in Braunston on Tuesday morning and it should have got to Stoke on Sunday but has not been seen and there is concern about the well being of the steerer. Boat is a tired blue with smallish square black windows but has brand new cratch triangle in Iroko and brand new dark blue cratch cover.
  11. just tried to get my harborough marine 45 footer through this lock and have given up local gossip says that I am not the first and that many of the older boats cant get through this lock... there is a suggestion that it has subsided... wondered if anyone else has had trouble with this? we've never had trouble with any other narrow lock...
  12. i am having trouble with a 1.5 BMC that is overheating after years with no problems i have always found filling the water difficult as i know i must not overfill it as it will shoot out some water out of the pipe on the side of the cap. i have always thought that i ought to fit a header tank to the side of the this cap - the little pipe outlet an engineer who came fitted an old milk bottle to the floor of the engine compartment filled with water and led this pipe down to it - and said i didnt need an expansion tank anyone any comments? thanks
  13. how do we go about finding out about long term rentals for 6months or more in France and the U.K. Escape the Ratrace do long term boat rentals in the uk you can find them at www.etrr.co.uk
  14. There is the alternative of not buying but renting per month off a company like "Escape the Ratrace" which saves the capital upfront I would have a look at www.etrr.co.uk if you are interested
  15. i have a problem! i have to move a narrowboat preferably to the grand union off the thames this saturday, (27/10) but at least off its present mooring at hampton court to somewhere else nearby. it has no working engine so i need a tow/ rafting up and is about 40 ft long - just wondered if anyone could help? i am only intermittently online so while you could post a suggestion especially as the time is short could i also ask you to phone me on 07935 232 058 if you can help/have any suggestions?? thanks wollix
  16. If i buy a 72 ft narrowboat am i limited in the canals i can travel over? thanks for any replies Wollix
  17. We always accept that the longest narrowboats are 72 feet but once you go over 60 ft does this restrict you on the network? are there places you cant get to? are there many or just a few? what is the longest boat that can literally go anywhere on the canals?
  18. thank you all of you as it is holland i dont think i can travel over there just to measure it though i might ask the seller to do so but i think in the light of these replies i will rule it out very helpful wollix
  19. i have a Springer 36 with a cruiser stern and a Lister SR2. in the middle of the cockpit there is a slot with a 3ft pipe that fits onto the gearbox and which (not surprisingly) moves the boat into forward or reverse. it drops into either end with a fair amount of force i would like to remove the pipe and go for something with a wire to a control on the side but it seems to be asking a lot of any thin wire arrangement because it does take a fair amount of effort to swing the present arrangement over any ideas? i did chat to someone in the summer who said "ohh you cant do that" but in my experience of life only sometimes is that true... thanks in advance
  20. ive got the opportunity to buy a dutch barge which is almost the right size for the canals and i am wondering if i can get away with using it as it is a nice boat. its about 35 ft long which is obviously no problem but its width is 2m 20cm which i calculate to be 88 inches which is 4 inches over the fabled 7ft so my question is: what do you think? will i get stuck? or will 2 inches on either side not really matter in the scheme of things? thanks
  21. B&Q have some nice slatted doors that are easy to fit and not too expensive - you can trim the size at either end and if pushed take the end off and a few slats and reassemble- did a perfect job for me!
