Its a good thing, you should definitely give them the mobile number where you can receive a text. Usually banks or even gmail asks 2 things to login, one could be password and other could be a secret one time password(OTP) sent to your phone that expires within 5 mins. yes you can, once a few weeks you can update them in a pub or cafe where wifi is free. if you have a tv, you can just get a cheap desktop/mini pc or stick for £100 ish.

its part of license, I dont think you are subsidizing others just because you dont use it. My gym membership allow free classes but I have never been to one, does not mean am subsidising those who use those classes.
