    Thank you everybody for the very helpful suggestions. I'll have another opportunity tomorrow (Sat) to perfect my cranking. If I make no progress I'll have to bite the bullet and go for the full conversion outlined by steamraiser2.

    Has anyone any advice about -- or experience of -- converting a hand-start Lister CE engine to electric start? I'm new to narrow boating and seem to lack the knack or the strength to start the engine on the boat I want to buy. The boat is in the Leighton Buzzard area but I'm hoping to bring it north to the Lancaster Canal...if I can get it started! I should say that it starts well for the current owner. Would a Dynastart be a good option? Or should I go to hand crank evening classes? Thanks for any suggestions.
