When Trojan was being built, Mel Davis got Mrs. Athy to stand on the back deck with a broom in her hand and asked her to move it up and down until she found the height which was comfortable for her. He then measured the height from deck to broom handle, and built the swan-neck accordingly. It sounds a rough-and-ready method but it worked.

I think that, on trad-stern boats with short back decks, the tiller is set high so that it will clear the superstructure. This isn't a problem on cruiser-sterned boats, so that could be why they're often lower.

    All sounds very sensible

That style does have a historical precedent.

Makes us feel a little better!

Small of the back or elbow height it is. For both of us that's 42". We are going to go with that... Thanks one and all.

  3. When we bought our boat, we never noticed how ugly our tiller was. The other thing is that its very tall, OK for me but almost shoulder height for my 5' 6" wife. We are getting it altered to a swan neck but are there any recommendations for height above the deck? BTW I have noticed that a lot of hire boats tillers are very low, below hip height.

Looks like a 16mm difference in length to me, with the 150 being shorter.

Wow, Thanks for the links, it makes it much clearer. I can see there is 1.7 mm difference in the centres. It looks to me the dimension from the adaptor plate face to the coupling face is almost the same. 232 mm for the 120 and 216.4 + 16 = 232.4 mm on the 150, assuming SAE 5.

I suspect the adaptor plate between flywheel housing is to an SAE standard so will probably do. I also expect the splines will be the same but f no a drive plate would need changing.

I can't speak for the length of the box so the shaft or engine may need moving.

The oil cooler is inserted into the return from the skin tank to the engine.

Thanks for the response. I now understand about the cooler.

  6. We have a Canaline 38 with a PRM 120 gearbox. If we wanted to change it out for a PRM 150 is the fit the same or will I need a new flywheel cover/endplate and modify the prop shaft etc. I read it will also need an oil cooler does this use raw canal water or is it plumbed in to the engine cooling water.

  7. The mushroom vents on our new to us NB are plugged with a filter medium somewhat like you get in an extractor fan although a bit coarser, I assume to keep bugs out. Is this usual? Or should I remove it? The fore and aft door louvered vents do not have any of this stuff between them.

  8. Thank you everyone, I now have a few options I can explore without getting myself in trouble with the law. BTW this retailer https://www.mobilesignalboosters.co.uk/?gclid=CjwKCAiA66_xBRBhEiwAhrMuLThdBZ0ki3_MukFipmzp5vZTkbwgrDw1J0E1FkGQz7qU9uUXEwRgrxoCuxsQAvD_BwE

does not mention that it is illegal for a booster on a boat in fact helps you choose the best type for a boat.  Nearly got myself in hot water but the people here put me on the right track.

Ive got a 4G external aerial with a 4G router in the boat. Then everything connects via wifi to it.

When we go there I usually put my 3 sim (unlimited data) in it out of my phone or when we are there for a day or night we just use a prepaid sim card  think I've got a 40gb one that last for 2 years.

I did not realise that a phone sim would work in a 4G router I had assumed you needed a data only sim. Now that is interesting.

?eh? that's not corect surely? Loads of peeps have got routers with an aerial socket and stick a box on the roof.

Ditto miFi kit with a sim in it.

Smacks of someone in a phone shop misdirecting you

    More info please...

It seems mobile phone signal boosters are illegal not the type of equipment you have

  11. My Idea for a mobile phone booster is a non starter as I am informed it is illegal even though a NB is almost a Faraday cage. I guess the law is really for wooden and GRP boats as its OK in a car or truck. We are not continuous cruisers and don't want to sign up to MiFi with a contract. Is there any legal way of getting an improved mobile signal within a NB so as to use our data allowance?

  12. We are not continuous cruisers so don't want to sign up to a MiFi contract and invest in that type of equipment, but would like to improve the mobile signal within the NB and use the data allowance on our phones. We are considering the one off investment in a mobile signal booster. Has anybody else done this? Any recommendations of which type of equipment?

  13. We have just bought our second hand nb and everything seems fine. We are a bit confused about the radiator heating. The setup seems standard. 2coil calorifier ( engine and webasto). Both webasto and engine produce lashings of hot water but only the webasto heats the radiators. Should the engine heat the radiators by convection from the calorifier as there is no separate circulation pump or do we need to operate the webasto and use its pump and rely on it throttling back when the engine is running. I have checked there seem to no valves shut etc. Thanks from a newbie!

As has been said previously - the BSS has no 'say' over ventilation in Private boats (commercial boats is a different matter).

They can suggest that it may be better to have more ventilation but it is not a 'fail' not to have any ventilation.

    Well I never.
